This is a beautiful flower garden. I think you got a good deal on it! I started a scrappy one but was not doing it right, so I turned it into a carry bag. With left over flowers I made mug rugs to donate to Ribbon Of Hope, a local group that follows cancer patients. These will be going in the Christmas boxes they pass out to their patients.

I have a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt top that my great grandmother made for me when I was a little girl. All sewed by hand. I'm now 86. She passed away before she could finish it. It has been stored in my cedar chest all these years. I hace recently learned to quilt and will hang the top on the wall in my sewing area so I can look at it every day. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Gotta love a Grandma's Flower Garden. That one is a beauty ... in spite of it's slant. Every quilt is a work of art ... many hours of work, fabrics, and design decisions. I liked the white path in that garden instead of the traditional green. Lessons from an Old Quilt is one of my KZbin faves.

My Mom made hand pieced and hand quilted Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts. No EPP. She cut the hexagons using a cardboard template. She carried a cloth bag around with her and did a couple hexs at a time when she could. Her pathways were always white. She quilted them on a wooden quilting frame in the corner of a bedroom. She did Double Wedding Ring quilts all by hand as well. The center hexs were always yellow and the print pieces were often feed sacks. These were big quilts too. (We did not have a T.V.).

My Granny Lovett lived in rural Mississippi and money was tight for her. She was a quilter. Over the years My Mother and Dad received 4 or so quilts from her as well I'm sure did her other 6 grown children. The quilts/patterns would have a certain color, say blue in the design and all the sudden the color of the blue would change in a block 5 of the blocks, same with maybe the red or the yellow. What happened in my thought process is you didn't have enough of the blue she started with to finish the quilt so from her scrap pile or maybe from where she bought her fabric she got some more and it wasn't a big deal if the blue's weren't the same shade. A quilt was something she gave as a gift to warm you bed, made by hand from her to you.I am not so sure the fabric wasn't given to her I was never sure. We drove down to visit 5 times a year (We lived in the Texas Panhandle, Next to New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas. So a great distance away) When I was old enough to think about such things she wasn't able to make quilts any more. She then croched. So she croched me a white baby blanket with pink roses for my new born baby girl.

I am working on a GFG with 3/4 inch hexies that I started several years ago. I used to only work on it when I traveled, but it's become a nice brain break at home now, too. Mine has turquoise centers, a light purple ring, a dark purple ring, a light green ring & a pale yellow for the paths. The pattern I found in my grandma's upstairs that I'm using for inspiration also has diamonds between the flowers. So those are a lilac color. If I decide to continue for a queen-size quilt with a 12-inch drop, i will need about 5,300 hexies! 😮 I have about 30 of the 72 flowers made... time will tell.

I have looked at other brands, but I always come back to the Janome. I also love my Juki! I hope this helps with your decision. There are so many great machines out there to choose from!

If it was made in 1930’s, it was made during the Great Depression. Fabric was hard to come by, all fabric were repurposed. If it was the way my parents described. It was extremely hard times. It was a beautiful quilt now I want to make, I will probably make as appliqué or putting batting under flower and make it puffy.

She certainly does! It is a heavy quilt! I did see that! I love it! Dave is great! We started planning a collab a few months ago, but I think I may have dropped the ball on that one. I need to contact him again! He is one of my favorite KZbinrs. I would be honored to do a collab with him. ' Thank you so much for watching and for mentioning Dave! I appreciate it!

I never did know what became of my mother's Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. It took her a long time to make it; and, it wasn't very big. I have been working on one for over eight years now. I work on it until my hands hurt (then I have to stop for a while). I may use my finished flowers for something else. I have already used some of my flowers in a Queen sized Double Wedding Ring quilt for my daughter (which she gave away). I put the flowers in the center field between the eyes (or footballs units). It was made from scraps. As soon as I learned that she gave that quilt away (before she received it in the mail), I quit making any more quilts for her. That hurt my feelings so bad. It still upsets me.

Oh, no! I am so sorry your feelings were hurt like that. That is terrible. Love to you. I hope you continue to make flowers. They are great in other projects, too. So pretty. Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your story. ❤️

The first quilter didn't finish the quilt? Is that a possibility? And, as you said .... finishing a Grandmother's Flower Garden is tricky. Yes, that was a daisy. Kudos to the quilter that chose a way to get it finished.

That's a great theory! That could be it. I love thinking about all the possibilities. It is fun! Thank you so much for this idea.

I think you got a bargain. My mother made several queen-size grandmother's flower garden quilts. It is actually tricky to get the flowers straight. Sadly, Mom didn't shop at quilt stores and some of the fabric wore out quickly, so the quilt she made for me is in storage now.

Oh, that is sad. I have so many in my collection like that. I love looking at them, but it also makes me sad at the same time. Thank you so much for watching and sharing. ❤️

I wonder if the hexies were cut and assembled by one person, who then was flummoxed when it didn't turn out straight, then someone else took it over years later, squared it with the gingham and quilted it. I like to imagine the unknown stories behind these quilts!
@SewtheDistance5 ай бұрын
It is so weird because I think the hexies are straight, which makes me wonder what happened. Unless they are each off by a little bit? It looks like the mix up is on the edges, but I am not sure. I studied it for hours and couldn't figure it out. It is wonderfully unique!

@@SewtheDistance Hmm. I wonder if it is off square by 60 degrees? It looks like the flower hexagons are lined up if you look at it at the proper angle. The maker should have lined it up with a vertical axis of the flowers (a line through opposite corners) parallel to the sides of a rectangular quilt, and a line perpendicular to that line through the sides of the flowers parallel to the top and bottom of the intended rectangle, but must have gotten confused by working with 60 degree angles instead of 90 degrees. It looks like she laid out the flowers side by side and expected it to work like square blocks, but she got the whole works tilted by 60 degrees and couldn't figure out how to straighten it. Whatever happened, it must have been really frustrating!

That could be it! I know I would have been super frustrated, too. I love thinking about this stuff! Thank you for your ideas!

I've seen them give a "scalloped" type look when placed on the bed, hence not giving them a straight edge. Not sure if yours is the same (if it wasn't squared off).
@SewtheDistance5 ай бұрын
I have seen that, too. This one was appliqued to gingham borders and is squared off. It is a beauty! Thanks so much for watching and sharing!

I wonder if this I the work of 2 makers? One made the flower garden and another, decades later, solved the problem of how to finish it and then quilted it as well.

I think so, too! Although I usually can pick old quilts up at auctions for under $50, I was still thrilled to get this for $150. I would have even bid more if I needed to.
@delwyngraham40336 ай бұрын
love it, Is the gingham on all 4 sides? If so it may have been intentional to float it and keep the hexagons intact😊

No you did not pay too much for that quilt, I have a quilt top from a great aunt the same pattern, machine made w/tiny stitches, made w/fabric from the 20's, 30 's and 40's and I see some of the same fabrics in your's in mine.

I am 99% certain I have just found a photo of this exact quilt being made by the original creator. In this video at around 5min 47. It looks exactly the same, with the yellow middles. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2bclGqorLpmrNUsi=6ejkLtIvXoaup-8R

Thank you for this wonderful video! I love it! I was super excited to see it, but unfortunately, it isn't the same quilt. Darn it! The one featured has much bigger hexagons. The ones in this quilt are tiny. Also, I was able to meet the maker's family, and see photos of the maker. Thank you SO much for sharing this, however! You never know!
