In 1980 my friends and I had finished our nurse training, we worked for 6 months and then we went to the Greek islands for 3 months, we slept on the beach or rented rooms, we ate in small tavernas got bread from the village bakeries every morning it was the best time of my life

Went for only 3 weeks at a time every year in the 1970’s and 1980’s, plus several times in the 90’s and did the same as you did. It was bliss. I’ve never been happier anywhere. We paid our way, left no litter, were respectful…and the people were wonderful. The food, was superb. Then many tourists came, wanting burgers, chips, nightclubs, sunshine, lots of alcohol, as if they were at home ! I visited Corfu often, Paxos, Crete several times, Rhodes, Samos, Skiathos, Meteora, Athens, Kos, Santorini, Ios and so on.

The Greek diet is mainly vegetarian.Meat dishes used to be once a week and fish too. Traditionally we don't consume anything coming from meat every Wednesday and Friday during the whole year. Also we fast about 40 days in Easter and the most hardcore people fast at Christmas too.

I was privileged to live in north west Greece, Arta, near the most beautiful, mystical mountains and valleys, with my then Greek partner, I'm English. I was accepted into the villages and beyond, taught traditional cooking, fishing in rivers, growing fruit, vegetables, salads, nuts, herbs, olives, gods foods and chemical free home made wine, and very strong alcohols. I loved the warmth of the Greek people and my life there, just beautiful.

Oh my God. My first boyfriend was Greek and we were together for 10 years and we used to go back to Komotini for many holidays from University and his mother taught me the basis of my cooking today. I miss them so much especially his Mum who adored me and wanted me to marry her son. Her spinach and meat and cheese pies were more than amazing. I cringe at frozen filo and don’t attempt to cook with it but one thing Incant do is the pastry 😢 Happy days ❤

Many American-Greeks opt out of using filo by substituting flour tortillas for individual feta-spinach pies. The tortillas are not labor intensive and taste similar to filo. Of course, filling technique is different but all ingredients are identical.

I admire Greek food.. I am half Greek and Romanian , but growing up my father never knew he was Greek we did an ansetor dna stuff and came back mostly Greek , Romanian and other stuff. It sucks because we only mainly make Romanian food but we never make Greek food but I wanna try so bad everything looks so delicious God bless ❤

Here in NYC it’s almost as if Greeks only eat fish,as the Greek restaurants in NY seem to be 80% fish, and maybe a couple of lamb dishes.

@@JanetBrown-px2jn oh wow! For me the worst worst worst experience was in Chicago Greek town, very popular Gyros place was selling minced meat as gyros! I was soooo sad, in that moment I just moved to US from Europe and I was happy to try my food.. sad, very sad... Middle East cuisine is so rich, African delicious.. Mexican, you name it.. but representation is very bad.

@@K1k1Ktina I think maybe NYC probably has a lot more authentic foreign foods than other cities do,depending on the food,I know that CA has the biggest population of Vietnamese,so I would expect the Vietnamese food to be more authentic there than in NY.i live in the most ethnically diverse place in the US,and I believe you can get authentic foods here, not in the big name restaurants, but the little hole in the wall spots the locals eat at.Being in the restaurant business I have worked with lots of Mexicans, mainly from Puebla, and I know they had plenty of authentic Mexican street carts, and restaurants, same goes for Chinese in our 2 Chinatowns, most Americans wouldn’t eat about 85% of the food sold there as it authentically Chinese.

@AhmetCakar-ul8nr there's no "turkish" cuisine. Everything Turkish it's stolen from Greeks Arabs and Persians. Ottomans weren't even in the region when Greeks were making these dishes. Try again kid.

@@accobra4272 Yes İts True. Turks stole everything. It is proven by historical documents that Yoğurt was created by Zeus. Socrates was a big fan of Dolmades. Alexander the Great was eating Mussakka every evening. King Konstantin never eats anything without Tzaziki. :))))))
