I can help with the batteries some. A DEKA battery if I remember is a 5 yr warranty. Check commercial application. When you stop in the heat, or the summer on hot days, open the hood and let the heat out. When there is no air moving, everything under the hood bakes from the motor heat, including the batteries. My last battery was 5 years old, it charged to 12vdc, but the CCA dropped by half. Good luck out there

Happy Pappy, Their business income is separate from their income as employees of the business, and both entities are taxed. There's only so many battery manufacturers, they just get labeled depending on who's selling them. The important part is the warranty, and availability. Autozones are EVERYWHERE, and have a 3 yr full replacement iirc on their gold batteries, so not a bad place to go with at all. Always a good idea to have a jumper pack for emergencies, and of course a basic toolkit to remove/replace them on the road.

Thank you for your great informative videos. Subbed and liking each video as I watch them. According to my calculations, if possible to drive an extra 2000 miles per week, you would double your money, even with the maintenance charges you incurred. I have a couple of questions. 1. How many miles can a single driver with or without cdl put in a week? 2. Does having a non-driving passenger affect that mileage? Sorry, if I missed that in your videos I have watched.

Thank you! We just watched it. (Darrick listened because he was driving 😬). We do have a printer and the cooler in the back seat plus all our luggage so I don't know if we would be able to do a microwave also It's a lot less room in an already not roomy set up with both of us BUT we will consider this. I know your Oklahoma place you got the 9 for $55 is about $6.11 a meal but you were saying when you are home it's $2.30 or around there per meal? That would help for sure! Once we get a sleeper, the Planet Fitness would definitely be something to consider too! -Cinnamon

@@TruckandTravel yes. Normally I do chicken so it's about $2.20 a pound. And I do 8oz per meal. Then add a side. Potatoes,rice, corn. Simple things. And a cooler takes up a ton of space in the cab. So I run mine in the bed of the truck. If you pull out your backseat and made a 2 level shelf in the back. You guys should have plenty of room for printer and microwave on 1 side. Top and bottom. Then luggage on the others. His/ hers too and bottom.

Brandon Kisner he needed batteries likely because of the constant vibration and high underhood heat from the tightly packed engine bay and constant pulling keeping under hood temps up there.

Pretty much all motor companies (Ford,dodge,nissan ext) put the battery under the base 3 yr 36,000 mile factory warranty because they know the battery will very well go out just after that mileage but sometimes they go longer.It's to protect their budget and lower warranty cost.In this case Ford parts and batteries are motorcraft so these batteries Truck and Travel had replaced will go right back to motorcraft as a core,go threw a simple rebuild,and right back on the market or new vehicle to be sold.Almost every battery you buy would have been used in another vehicle at some point.
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
That's just the way it comes from the factory. We also have 167K on the truck and use to idle a LOT! Our factory didn't matter at all because as soon as we bought it, we put Commercial plates on it which voids the warranty that usually comes on a new truck. 😩 -Cinnamon
@sullifishing40356 жыл бұрын
@ Truck and Travel 100% true!Trucks used for Hot Shot warranty voided immediately.What most people don't know as well is if the egr is bypassed even on a regular truck not used for Hot Shot it will void factory warranty as well but only the powertrain.a/c system radio ext.. would still be intact.IMO I think it's a cheap way out for the manufacturer to avoid warranty cost for trucks used for Hot Shot.I mean that's what the freaking truck is built for is to haul lol

Which company do you run your insurance through?
@d.m.bradleytransport49796 жыл бұрын
Hi you two. You are a big help. I have been researching for a few months while running my other business. I am hoping to free myself up from that business to get on the road in a year or less. So still have plenty of time to research and get my act together. So again, Thank YOU! I have only watched a few of your videos but will keep doing so, and if you don't have time to answer my question, I will hit you up another time, no worries, and I'll try to catch your live prod-cast one day as well. My Question is: When you get your hotel rooms for the night, are you able to park at them, or do you have to park at the flying J / truck stop and look for hotels that are within walking distance of where you are able to park? I am liking the idea of hotel rooms because I may take my paperwork with me on the road from my other business and like the idea of having a room at night to work in. I was worried I would have to plan parking every evening and then be faced with finding parking close enough to a hotel room, where I know most people will sleep in their vehicles. Realizing you guys get a room a lot, I am just curious for some more details on the logistics of that? Thanks so much! And again, if you don't have time, I'll ask you again at a later date. I'm in no hurry. Just want to be as prepared as I can when I actually hit the road. David
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
Somehow didn't see this comment! Since there is 2 of us whoever is not driving looks for a hotel. Depending on how many hours we have left of driving/the weather/ etc. we look for a hotel that is on our route (usually click on the option for truck stops and look for one that say is 200 miles away if we have around 200 miles of drive time left, click on that truck stop and see what town it is in to stay on our route). We first look up that town on google maps, then click on the search bar again and just put "hotels" and it will list hotels in that area. Then we put it on Satellite mode and zoom in to different motels to see if we would be able to park there. If it looks like we could, we read the reviews first to see if there are any bed bugs. If yes it's on to the next one. We try to stay out of cities because of crime rates and good areas have the hotels rates HIGH! So if it looks like we can park there and there are no bedbugs we call and ask 1.) do you have truck parking? 2.) do you have any discounts for CDL drivers. Some hotels do offers discounted rates for CDL drivers. Hope this helps! -Cinnamon

Each dealership (if you get the batteries at a dealership) have different mark ups.I worked at several service depts. for Ford/Dodge as a Service Advisor over a 12 year span and I can say that the average for both the batteries is around $300 installed.The information gave to Truck and Travel about needing to replace both batteries is spot on.The batteries in a way rely on each other and by putting a new (stronger) battery in with a lower cca (cold cranking amps) battery the older one will drag the new one down.Hope this helps ya :-)
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
I LOVE being able to share something I just learned myself. I think a lot of people assume that everyone knows certain things like that but I didn't so I figured there were others that didn't know it as well! Our last maintenance was $411 and the oil change and service is usually a little less than $100 so it would be around $300 for both batteries like Sulli said. But it also has a 3 year warranty so "$100 a year" it ends up being is worth it in my book -Cinnamon
@RaoulThomas0076 жыл бұрын
Different batteries have different warranties. Most battery warranties are bifurcated into two separate warranties. NAPA used to offer a Legend battery with a 24/84 warranty. Total replacement for free if the battery fails within the first 24 months ( first warranty),and, pro rated thereafter for months 25 through 84 (second warranty). So shopping around, reading reviews and determining the true warranty is key. So in the example above it’s a two year replacement warranty and pro rated thereafter for the next five years.

@anthony moser so that you know our situation a little bit better, we do not have an approved DOT sleeper so 8 of our 10 hours off duty have to be outside of the truck. 2 can be counted as a passenger. This allows us 16 hours which I can see if we did 800 miles a day it would be 13.33 hours of straight driving which is doable but you also have to factor in fueling up, bathroom breaks, mandatory breaks, loading, unloading and again us not having a sleeper. Maybe one day once we've made some progress. We are new at this but doing what we can 😊 -Cinnamon

Man as fast as the truck will depreciate at that rate of miles it’s a shame to work like that for only around $15 per hour. If you inherited a good deal of money or if your house was a gift then perhaps a lower wage job like this is ok. But I know I’d be fairly nervous once the truck got over 300,000 miles and I still had like 36 payments left. Things could get ugly quick if you’re not inherently “well to do” to begin with. Thanks for the transparency tho... God bless you guys!

Neo Craft Definitely a good point, my curiosity comes in as to what do people do for a living that leave the transportation business? It's hard leaving a job where you're basically your own boss to go to a job where you're stuck in on one place for 8+hrs. a day and stay they 30+ years in hopes of a good retirement. Then retire only to ironically spend your retirement traveling.

ElroyJosephJenkins JrTheThird I know other people have sayings like this, but here’s my rendition: “If you’re not making money today, you won’t make money tomorrow, either.” Basically, after owning my own business for 21 years (I’m 40 now) I’ve learned that milking something in hopes that the future will bring more milk usually only ends up delivering sore hands. If it’s a good idea today, it will be tomorrow as well. But if it’s a dud today, and you’re putting effort into it, it’s likely gonna be a bigger dud tomorrow.

A big maintenance bill due to batteries that have a 3 year warranty, shouldn't be accounted for just one-months costs. Oil change costs again, should average over the time frame until the next change. Food is necessary weather you're driving or not. My foodie food bill is more than that just for me at home, so I'd actually save money eating at truck stops, lol. So I think you're selling yourselves short with your number. Might as well take out taxes and make it extra depressing. I can appreciate being a pessimist though. I myself am a perfectionist, so everything sucks to me, haha. When I owned my trucking co I made sure I dispatched my trucks between 1800 and 2100 miles away. Think about maximum production miles wise. So from your home base you want to end the week at your home base. So maintenance can be done while you at home. 2100 mile can be logged in 3 days. So in therapy 3 days out 3 days back. Don't always work but that should be your goal. Because you two as team drivers get your restart in 24 hrs instead of 34. Try never to be layer over that's what cost you money. And I have a bunch more little tips that can save you bunches of money. Well that's enough for now. Later Bill ( Two Sticks )

Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately since we do not have a sleeper berth we cannot run the hours of a team but only as one person since the other has to be on duty in the passenger seat. It's something we are working on but everything takes money unfortunately! -Cinnamon

@shadonovan Richardson , we do! We both had previous businesses so the way we had it set up for them is sending in an IRS payment quarterly. We just kept it this way since at the beginning of the year we didn't know we were going to be doing this. This way if we owe more at the end of the year we will pay that and if we don't then we will get something back 😃 -Cinnamon

Walmart is the cheapest place to get your oil changed and battery and the battery are a better quality. I hat walmart but its cheaper . pull the back seat out and put a matters in and sleep in the truck.

Thank you for the information on the oil change and battery. We will definitely have to think about that. We are thinking about getting a sleeper berth. -Cinnamon

Why is your truck payment over $1,300 for the month? Was their no downpayment or trade in? Wow you got to pay that and the trailer off fast!

danclapper626 ya it seems like s Guy could make some decent money with a paid off truck and trailer while sleeping in the truck

Look at the model. It's higher and it costs more. Ram at $55,000 runs $1,100 a month.

Everybody have different plans guys. You can’t go into this business being CHEAP. Your maintenance account will be dry daily. You need the best equipment to run freight accordingly. The main focus is to maintain your goals, not the money. Money will come later. Great video content!
@natehawkins29106 жыл бұрын
Latoya Walker Money doesn’t just “come later.” That’s an excuse to buy time and kick the can whilst ignoring the present problem. Later comes a truck with 300,000 miles that isn’t worth what’s owed-and at the same time expensive repairs. Problems aren’t in the business of fixing themselves! People fix problems. (Or enable them)
@walkerinmotionllc86186 жыл бұрын
Neo Craft in other words, I’ve been trucking 10yrs and seen it All with money management. Everyone ways of thinking is different. “We” do what’s best for us. Everyone’s expenses are set up differently as well. This might have been a bad week for them which comes with the industry. Really comes with LIFE. Money comes and goes just have to know what purpose it serves for you. It’s all a learning experience. Owning your own business doesn’t come easy. I’m sure they have a plan for paying off their equipment.

Clearing $1,100 / 1,200 a week (minus taxes) is really not all that great for "two" people working. But on the other end, if you took out the hotel's ($333) batteries and oil change ($400) then your looking much better. Now with winter coming, hotel nights are going to be the norm....You are still figuring out what loads pay, and which to stay away from.
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I feel with every week we are learning more. There is definitely so much to learn in this industry. We are just happy to be given the opportunity to try it! I feel the amount will go up as well when we are able to actually team drive and use up the amount of hours we are allotted once we get a sleeper -Cinnamon
@dtrain55195 жыл бұрын
So how many hours would you say you guys put in to clear that much?
@ezcredit4u6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t run 22 - 24 hours a day. I’d run about 1000 miles a day which might be around 18 hrs a day.
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
Once we get a sleeper berth or something along those lines we will work that out. We have been getting good pay around here so not sure how that will factor in. Everything is a learning experience. -Cinnamon

That pay goes up when the truck/trailer payment stops coming out eventually. Also, not being stuck in a cubicle, no boss, choose your own hours, get to see lots of different places in your travels, I'd say it's definitely worth it. But everyone has a different idea of "worth it", so it's completely subjective
@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
Something to keep in mind is that DOT regulations say that anyone in the passenger seat has to be "on duty" so we are running the same hours as 1 person. We could do way better with 2 of us if we had a sleeper plus it would take away the hotel costs. Anything left over we put aside for taxes and maintenance even though taxes will not be much at the end of the year due to all the things we can write off 😊 -Cinnamon

I would not add food if you are not dining out. If it is nothing above the normal you would have eaten at home. Am I missing something? The fuel...who is your broker? Why are there no fuel surcharges? If you are getting one and not mentioning it then I apologize. If you are calling and booking the loads from a load board that is part of that call...A good skill to learn is how to broker a percentage of the surcharges, it is killing your profits. Know what it cost to run your truck per hour, per mile and have a bottom line for rate per mile. A good bottom line is 2.20 rpm. Master that and it will be easier to hit that five grand mark you have set.

I have been driving trucks commercially for about 12 years. You and your wife could be making a lot more money if you just cut out a few things. This is something that I would like you to try. Drive a full month with your wife and calculate how much money you made in that month. Then drive the next month without your wife being with you and you will make more profit without her being there. Males can survive without going to a hotel and that is where you are burning a lot of extra money that could be in your pocket. A shower at a truck stop is about $12.00 verses the amount of money that you are spending to sleep in a hotel.

I have watched a bunch of vidoes on this job / lifestyle / whatever and for the profit numbers I see this appears to be a colossal waste of time and money. My wife and I have full time jobs, insurance, pay all of our household expenses and get a W2 at the end of the year. We bring home way more a week than the profit you are getting from driving thousands of miles. Oh, and we are home every night. I am not sure why anyone would try to put a positive spin on the freight hauling thing, my only guess is misery loves company. As they say, keep doing what you are doing and you will keep getting what you are getting. My suggestion, get a real job.

No offense but if you two can’t survive off of 1175 a week then you have way too many unnecessary bills. If you also take out for income taxes, you're averaging less than 28 cents PER MILE!!!! Rookie company semi-truck drivers make more than that! WOW!!!!!! Wrong business to be in and getting worse every day! Glad I left back in '99!!! This just reinforces my decision to never return to that life ever again! Best of luck to you two, but it's not looking good on paper at all....... The brokers are making the real money. (You guys might want to look into being brokers and let some sucker do all the hard work)

@TruckandTravel6 жыл бұрын
Ahhh yes! It's easy to throw that out there without knowing any previous information 😬 We do in fact have our CDL and the only difference between a "REAL trucker" and us is the vehicle we drive. We are looking for loads, we have our own authority, we drive long hours and we go through the same as you. We are new to dispatching and this business and are putting ourselves out there to share the struggles and lessons. Comments like these make us not want to to be honest. But it's nice to hear from someone else whose on the road being so concerned and taking the time to make sure we know it ❤️ Thanks DieselTrucker2018 -Cinnamon
