Why are military training exercises allowed in civilian passenger airspace? This should NEVER have happened! Train helicopter pilots in military base airspace ONLY. This is the army's fault 💯 %
@PellyjellyMom3 сағат бұрын
Good question. Military air craft do practice landings at civilian airports in case they need to land there. If their base runway is destroyed or not near an area that needs protection, supplies or troop deployments they may need to use an alternative runway and practicing/training on different runways actually prevent accidents. This went terrible wrong though.
@ronp-eb9bhСағат бұрын
Unfortunately that will never exists. Military pilots must have interaction with civil aviation ATCs for training and for ATCs to also have familiarity with accommodating military flight-loads (which can be quite heavier and bigger than civil cargo). For the military...it's called Live Environment Training. How else can our Special Operations Pilots gain a mastery of flying their helicopters in cities and inserting operators atop buildings - other than doing it in a real us city? Yes, this happens every year. Just had an exercise in a South Texas metro a few years ago and it scared the crap out of some people in the neighborhood who didn't remember that the exercise was going to happen. Many military airfields are now co-located with Civil aviation airfields. Just look at Fort Cazavos, TX. You have military and civil aviation sharing the same Airfield and airspace. It's essential, but our ATC's must have the proper staffing and our aviators must stay situationally aware.

My heart goes out to all the families who lost their loved ones in this incident. What an absolute nightmare & tragedy this is. I truly believe it could've been avoided. My whole stance on this is, what were the military even training at a civilian airport for? Why weren't they doing this on the base. Also, why was the transponder turned off on the helicopter?

Ir's reported that the pilots in the helicopter had eyes on the plane and confirmed it, but say that they must have been looking at the wrong plane, the one that had just taken off from the airport. That plane was much further away at that point and flying up and out, and I guess I just do not comprehend how they didn't see the one headed in for a landing right in front of them.

A letter was sent out from the County of San Mateo Airports to all employees, last week. It stated that as of Feb 1st the San Carlos Federal Contact Tower would be UNSTAFFED! Quote "This morning we were informed by FAA headquarters that the SQL tower will be unstaffed, starting Saturday Feb 1st. Our controllers last day, will be Friday January 31st. Given that the FAA is ultimately responsible for ensuring Air Traffic services at SQL, we requested temporary FAA staffing in the tower. HOWEVER, the FAA informed us this morning that they will NOT provide temporary personnel. The letter went on to say much much more about concerns for flight safety. Reports coming in are that the towers were SEVERLEY understaffed and had staff working 10+ hour shifts.

In 2004, Kaloyev travelled to the Swiss town of Kloten, where he killed Nielsen, who had since retired from his air traffic control job at Skyguide. Also, Robin Wascher was never charged with homicide in 1991 mishap SHE caused at LAX. Wascher was responsible for 34 deaths.

After hearing the dialog between the tower and helicopter, it looks like the helicopter was at fault. They confirmed with the tower that they had visual separation ,which means they saw the plane.And the tower asked them again and they confirmed again they had visual separation. However, it looks like they were looking at the wrong plane. So when they confirmed they saw the plane the tower directed them to fly behind it. . If they had been looking at the right plane that would have happened. Instead they flew into the plane because they weren't looking at the right plane.If they had been looking at the right plane this wouldn't have happened . This happened in a matter of seconds.

My prayers go out to the family's who lost a loved one. But with that said in my opinion the helicopter pilot did it on purpose. There's no way they didn't see that big airliner in the sky with blinking lights and I'm pretty sure the helicopter has a warning system for objects in flight path. On the video he flew straight into the plane with not turning or going right or left or up or down. This was a act of EVIL wicked person who had mental health issues and did this intentional. I'm sorry for the loss of innocent people and I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ gives you comfort and peace. Amen...
