OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening

OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening

Күн бұрын

One of the great things about this time of year is that there’s so much growing in the garden that our meals come more and more from the garden and less and less from the grocery store. Today I thought I’d show you what I’m harvesting for a vegetable soup that, except for some salt, will be made entirely from garden ingredients.
If you shop on Amazon, you can support OYR simply by clicking this link (bookmark it too) before shopping: www.amazon.com/...
OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, and mulch. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.

Your videos are almost a form of meditation, incredibly peaceful. It's so important to think about how and where our food is produced. Something so integral to our survival and most people don't even take the time to stop and think about it. Thank you for all your effort you put into these videos.

Great video. It must be very gratifying making meals exclusively from food grown in your yard. I always enjoy seeing what people prepare and eat from the food they grow themselves. Its one thing to grow plants, but to also be able to incorporate these veggies in one's diet is another skill in itself. Thanks.

I am sooo envious!! My garden (first time for me) is on a much smaller scale but I truly enjoy being able to walk a few feet out my back door to harvest sweet pepper, egg plant, yellow squash, tomato and Swiss chard which I combine with yellow onion to create a delicious stir fry.

Beautiful Garden! Loved the soup video. I am working on my garden, 2nd year. I am in Zone 8, coastal North Carolina. I am making so many mistakes. Putting plants in the wrong place, etc. But this year is better than last year, and I am taking some good notes, and getting some help from my local Cooperative Extension office. So next year should be better. Thanks for posting these videos. Your garden is my inspiration.

Nice one Patrick! Just back from Leeds with another wooden pallet I found and more coffee grounds from Starbucks. I need to start another row of heaps so need another three pallets to complete the first one. I had thought I knew everything about making leaf mould - just pile leaves up, dowse with urine and leave for two years. I was surprised to see heat coming off the leaves during the week when I made a heap with those I'd collected. I had not considered mixing coffee grounds with them as I was advised tonight. I've been out to sweep the local streets of leaves tonight, am eager to collect more and experiment with them.

Patrick great video as usual. I have a question regarding your onions and beets that look so beautiful. I too am in zone 5 with raised beds and limited daylight (5 hours if I'm lucky). I have had success with cherry tomatoes and kale but all my onions and beets have failed... They never get large and the onions just fall over very prematurely and no not get large stalks. Have you had any similar issues in the past? I grow organically with compost, blood meal, phosphate rock and greensand.
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 9 жыл бұрын
Joseph Strattard Thanks Joseph! We never had much luck growing onions in the backyard. We're growing all of our onions, peppers, and eggplants out front in containers. We get much more sun there. We grow beets in the backyard in an area that gets 5 to 6 hours of direct sun, and they grow slowly, but eventually get to be a decent size. Five hours may not be enough for the beets. Fortunately, you're having success with other crops. It's really a process of trial and error when growing in partial shade.

This one was your most descriptive on how you made your food from your bounty, but I'd love to see it... if you're interested in doing it of course. You're obviously well versed in making 'fun' meals from your garden, and seeing how realistic and easy it is to do so would be helpful for me. Thanks for your vids. Please could you do a vid on how you know what to plant (seasons), for how long (when to harvest) and water needed, etc. Is it on the seed packet or how to read it. Parasuniversal.com You're very welcome! I'll definitely cover those topics in future videos. In the meantime, books like "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible", "Square Foot Gardening", and "Four-Season Harvest" are excellent resources for when and what to plant. There are very helpful tools online as well. For example, here is a tool that tells you when to start seeds indoors based on your last frost date: www.johnnyseeds.com/e-pdgseedstart.aspx. Seed packets are also a good source for planting information. If you're looking to get started now, please let me know what zone you're in and I'll be happy to provide some ideas.

I'm not sure I've ever heard you mention "perpetual spinach", or either I missed that video. Is it perennial, or.... what's the deal on that? And does it taste like typical spinach, or how would you describe its flavor? And you mentioned that you harvest the potatoes "as needed". Is it true that newly-harvested potatoes must be stored for approximately a month before using, or is that like... mythology?

Hi Patrick, your garden looks beautiful, do you have any tricks to helping tomatoes bloom and set fruit? thanks.
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 8 жыл бұрын
+Althea McDougal Thanks, Althea! We don't do anything special to make sure they bloom and set fruit. The climate here in summer is very good for growing tomatoes, because we have plenty of days with temps below 90 degrees f, which is best for setting fruit. Do you by any chance live in a hotter climate?
@TheasGarden
@TheasGarden 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes Patrick, I live in Florida zone 9b so sometimes it's difficult to get the fruit to set, someone suggested spraying with 100% apple juice or bloom set spray which I haven't been able to find here, I'm going to research that further but right now anything will be a help, I want huge luscious tomatoes! I was able to get a few watermelon beef steak tomatoes last season, they we're delicious! really would like too get more of them, any info would be really helpful, thanks Patrick 😀.

@OneYardRevolution 8 жыл бұрын
+Althea McDougal You're welcome, Althea! I think the key would be to start your tomatoes early enough that they set fruit before temps are up in the 90s. I've never grown in Florida, but my guess is you'd want to start them in January or February (inside if necessary). I hope this helps!

Dolly Perry It's normal for them to look like they're thirsty when it's hot out. I'd wait for the soil to dry out before watering again. If you stick your finger in the soil a couple inches down and its dry, then it's time to water.

What is the Latin name of your pepetual spinach? *It looked good but everything looked good in your garden compared with what my allotment has produced this year.I would starve if I had to rely on my garden for food. Late in the season we have 10-23 C. Only peas, beetroots and potatoes came up. Huge slugs destroyed the peas. Of 3 rows of beans, a row of parsley root, a row of cabbage, a row of parsnips, 2 rows of carrots only 2 carrots have come up. The only other vegetable plants I have are ones I grew indoors and planted out. Slugs are a constant battle and probably a losing one. On my glazed balcony I have less than a dozen tomatoes, a few of which are ripening. Most of them are on 2 cherry tomato plants. The other 12 have hardly any tomatoes and are smaller than the cherry tomatoes. There is one cucumber the size of a tenth of a cornichon and it is being killed by spider mite. A few of the tomatoes I planted out have flowers only. So I am instead of harvesting sheet mulching and weeding. The soil is too hard and compact and no matter how much couch grass I pull up there is always more. Everything is very disheartening.

Edwin Reffell Hi Edwin. Perpetual Spinach is really a chard. It's Latin name is Beta Vulgaris (var. Cicla). I'm sorry to hear about the disheartening growing season. With cool temperatures like that, it's hard to grow a summer garden. We got off to a slower start than usual as well as a result of cool weather, but it finally warmed up in July. Do you grow your peas vertically? If not, doing so might help reduce slug damage. I think sheet mulching the hard compact soil will help a lot too. Once the soil is in better shape, you'll likely have healthier plants and fewer pest problems. Now if the weather will just cooperate. ;-)

Thanks. It is called mangold here and I see now that my Kurdish friends gave me plants. Caucasian climbing spinach (Hablitzia tamnoides) is perennial but I am not sure if it is really spinach.

How do you keep the squirrels out?? Here in New Jersey I'm lucky to harvest 20 tomatoes in a season (not much for my many plants!) I can't afford new fencing and don't think it will help.
@OneYardRevolution

We grow indeterminate tomatoes on trellises. The squirrels get some of the low hanging fruit, they don't climb the trellises for the fruit higher up.

Whoa-whoa-whoa...back the bus up! You planted potatoes in a bag? Have you done a video on that?
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 9 жыл бұрын
hevnbown I didn't do a video on it, but I just put a few inches of compost at the bottom of each bag, planted 3 seed potatoes, and filled the rest of the bag up with compost, leaves, comfrey, and a little coarse sand. It was a good way to grow some extra potatoes, but the ones in the ground got a lot bigger.

OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening What kind of bag? My mountain dirt seems to have lost it's ability to produce big potatoes. I get a bunch of small pea-sized to 2 to 3 inch potatoes with the flea beetles and blight killing the plant by mid to late July. Growing them in a bag might be my answer for at least a little while. Thanks!

@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tamoy! If I lived in Jamaica, I'd grow as many edible perennials as possible. For example, if I had the space, I'd grow bananas, coconuts, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. Of course, you can also plant annual vegetables. I'm not familiar enough with the climate there to know when to plant, but this document will give you a good idea of the best crops to plant: www.jamaica-no-problem.com/jamaican-food.html#sthash.OGHw2xJk.dpbs
