I just love watching another mama who views magic the same way. I pray for more moms to start being more vigilant in this area. The enemy loves sneaking magic into the hearts of little ones. Thank you for your videos. Blessings on you and yours!

Hi Raquel! Thanks for this video! I too am quite picky about books so I am excited to look into some of these! I still struggle with the fairy tales and fables. To us it’s not real life enough. Also still a lot of dark undertones, as many of them got their “special ability” from demons instead of biblical “special abilities” that were given by Yahweh. We are picky about even bringing them into our house, past our hedge of protection. My husband also is quite picky about animals that are portrayed as people (like can talk and drive and such). We own very few books, but they are well loved by my children! We really like Maple Hill Farms books (there are two) by Provenson. Scholastic “a first discovery book” are super cool with see through pages that are fun. I have heard great things about Storytime with the Millers series by Martin although we haven’t read them.

Defintely gonna have to save up for a bunch of these! Some of our favourites so far are the Little House Picture Books (small excerpts from the novels with illustrations in picture book format), and The Complete Brambly Hedge collection. the illustrations are SO incredibly detailed, we could just sit and study them. I love that the Winter Story has nothing to do with christmas, but there is a story called The Secret Staircase where it ends with illustrations that appear to have some somewhat chirstmasy decorations, but on the other hand they could just be evergreen decorations, as it never mentions a holiday. Another of our favourites is Water is Water, which is a somewhat poetic rhyming picture book about the water cycle. the illustrations are gorgeous. The only thing is in one spread there is a jack-o-lantern, so that may deter some.

When I was young in the mountains - an amazing wonderful book with beautiful pictures. By Cynthia Rylant Hairy Maclary five stories by Linley Dodd. Beautiful stories and great illustrations. Beatrix Potter Treasury stories are hilarious (Tale of Two Bad Mice) and cautionary (Little Pig Robinson). You have to let me know if you get these and like them. They’re our favorites, along with Ox Cart Man and James Harriet Treasury you mentioned.

I see no books with diverse characters.

For one, this is just a sampling. We do read about many diverse cultures and ethnicities and have books that represent various skin colors. 😊 The books I showcased here had American, Native American, English, Scottish, Middle Eastern, Jewish, (maybe more- would have to go back and review!), settings, and so the characters reflect those origins. For two, I don’t choose books based on the illustrations showing a particular race; rather, I am looking for the content of the books. That being said, I definitely understand wanting to have books that your kids can see themselves in. I would expect a black family to have way more books with illustrations of black children and families. Similar to what I was saying about how I think it’s a good thing to have Messianic Torah keepers writing children’s literature, so our children can see themselves in them. There’s nothing wrong with that!! 😊 But, again, my personal goal when choosing books is not based on diverse skin colors but on the content and representing/learning about diverse ethnicities. I’d love to know what some of your favorite books are to read aloud to your children!! 😊 💕
