About catamarans: I would never leave my Lagoon 52. Its like a rock in a surf. I can setup my drum-set sometimes. And if friends come we can even fit a whole band. Many times a fall a sleep in the saloon and don't even go to my cabin. I can sail it single hand and it gives me enough to do. I can fill it with almost half a year of provisions some of my dry food last even longer. I can say all the maintenance is enough to do for us. We rarely start the generator. The solar-panel and wind generators do the job (almost) Oh yeh.. the spacious kitchen I wouldn't give up for anything.

ye maybe the Lagoons and the one they had are bit on the bigger side but i'd definitely go for a Gemini or PDQ in the ~36 foot range if i want to do longer trips (and my wife is scared of monohulls for longer trips, so Cat is the only way to convince her to go sailing for an extended time)

Congrats for editing in such a cool way our fun time together time "Zika"! ;-) We've loved sailing with you both again... Reading the first comments: I believe it's going to be important to mention that you didn't dislike the catamaran experience as much as a lot of ppl think you did!!! It is true, sailing on a monohull and sailing on a cat is two complete different feeling and both style have a lot to offer. My personal analyse will be a tiny bit different. The new Nautitech open 40' shows very interesting features as a large open cockpit, easy sail trimming at mast and very balanced helm feeling. I would also think it's a very safe boat for new sailors or new catamaran owners. However, as Dan mentioned, we have been surprise by the poor quality in details. This doesn't make make it a bad sailing vessel but may disappoint quiet a bit when getting on that price range. We must confess we didn't get the best sails set as the boat we tested was a charter version and was not equipped with performance rig... I'm sure, the same boat would have felt much more dynamic with the proper setup for the 15/20kts of wind we had along this trip. I pretty sure the Lagoon experience we had may have help a bit Dan and Kika to love catamaran again... But I don't say much : Subscribe & Follow @Sailing Uma for more...

Cat's vs Mono's is like a religious debate. There is nothing like the feeling of being pressed to windward, with gunnels awash and spray flying. But them some yobbo in an G-Force 1500 comes past going twice your speed AND pointing 5 degrees higher! Whoever said cat's can't point, should explain it to Jeff Schionning, he obviously didn't get the memo. Myself, I just like sailboats :)
@nixl35184 жыл бұрын
I owned a cat and it could never point up as well as any mono! They suck going up, but make up by zigzagging fast and catching up and maybe passing a mono! That's just the way the geometry works so whoever Jeff is he's no magician, or god as you point out. Perhaps all the monohulls just sail downwind when he comes around. It's not about religion when it comes to pointing upwind, just facts! The small ones are gr8 fun sailing because they scream and they're a constant challenge keeping from flipping, the big ones are just big living rooms with a stick and a rag, underpowered just so they have no chance of flipping! Verdict: small cats are the sports cars, while large monos are grace under speed! It's just a choice depending if you want to sail or party, but can't do both well on either kind.

Maybe one day you folks will come to the Caribbean and see us "locals" as human beings with regular lives and families and responsibilities. I know its hard to imagine when you come just to enjoy our sand sea and sun with the mindset that you are doing us a favour with your USD and privileged lives. Maybe one day you will understand how important it was to those fishermen and everyone depending on them to catch the perfect winds... I mean current... I mean tide... I don't know man I am no fisherman but you get my point. I am sad that my first comment on my new favorite Yt channel had to be this but I felt I had to say something after all of those negative comments labeling those honest hard working "locals" as thieves and pirates. Hi Guys. When someone tries moving your boat like that, it's always good to notify the relevant authorities in the area. It's possible the fishermen were genuinely ignorant that what they were doing amounted to piracy and is highly illegal in just about any country, but it's also possible that the authorities don't know this is going on & don't want people leaving in a huff, so give them chance to sort it out their way, even though you still go storming off. Cats are great until you get the 50% surcharge on the marina bill (norm for Europe), or have to try and get into a marina berth shorthanded in strong conditions. A bit nailbiting. How gorgeous is Thais? We've all seen some amazing ladies on sailing channels on YT, Kika not least :-), but wow...! Any chance of hearing her opinion on the sailing life? I have Brazilian friends in London, and initially my friends wife wouldn't speak because she felt her English was too bad. The when I spoke to here in my atrocious Portuguese (not even Brazilian!) she almost broke a rib laughing a relented. She had more intelligent things to say than the rest of us put together, and her English wasn't as poor as she thought. So speak up girl!

Over-reaction to the fishermen. I cruised 13 years in the Caribbean and SW Pacific and this type of thing happened more than once. Firstly, they DO own the bay. In most island nations the reefs and bay belong to the nearest village; it’s not public space like in the USA for example. In many places, you should ask the locals if it’s OK to anchor or dive. Secondly, they’re working to feed their families. They work together to string out a long net which they gradually bring together to corral the fish. They’re entitled to do this and your boat was in their way. If you leave it unattended for too long, they have to solve the problem. Your neighbors did not intervene because they had no grounds to do so. They had probably already moved for the fishermen. I’m sure they would have intervened if your boat was in danger. So, remember you’re a guest in their country and try to adapt to their needs. Not all cruising is like Georgetown and the BVI.

An interesting view. I have no background to judge either way but as long as there was no intent of malicious activity I'd go with the fishermen's action.

@martinlanesmith first there's a fine line between right and wrong, second no one owns the bay! The bay is shared by fishermen, tourists and everyone else. I'm from the islands and we don't treat people and their properties that way. No ones should be touching anyones property without their knowledge. It's bad for business! If the fishermen wanted to fish in that certain area they could've gave them notice a day prior to move the boat. I know because that's what we do on my island. So yes, they have the right to be angry, I would be too if someone touched my property without my knowledge!!! The fishermen were wrong and in turn they probably lost some good business in the future.

@LuxembourgRichard You may be right. Not knowing the details its hard to tell. But it did occur to me, like you, that the chances are they didn't do it on a whim, and that in their minds they had some compelling reason. It is also incumbent on the privileged to be mindful and tread lightly when dealing with the locals for whom cruising the world for a lifetime of shits and giggles is another out of reach world and the ocean isn't just some aesthetic choice of sartorial background for adventure and KZbin income. Be that as it may, someone risking your everything is liable to piss anyone off, white, entitled or otherwise. I'd have thought just moving on with nothing but an irritated grumble was an understandable and proportionate response, whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation.

Any boat is a compromise. The compromises that have to be made reflects on a lot of characteristics of the boats. I've owned a great number of boats. Half of them monos and half multis. And they are inherently difficult to compare. How do you compare prices for instance? Well multis are per foot are more expensive. But how about per square foot? As for the sensation of sailing. A cat definitely feels different from a mono, but not less thrilling. I general, the bigger the boat the less feel you get for the sea. A large and relatively heavy cat does not thrill you in the same way as a lighter boat. I love the feeling of a multihull on a broad reach. Leaping out of the water when a gust hits. Transforming wind into speed instead of heeling over. That however comes at a cost. I have to reef more often and I have to shave weight off at all times. When it comes to safety the boats are different games too. Being knocked down by wind and waves is a risk in a multihull. I'll do anything to avoid that. But I know the boat has buoyancy and we will stay afloat no matter what, even with a flooded boat. The variation in boat design and character is great. It gives us all a chance to find what we need or prefer. With Uma you are definitely making the most of your boat. Love it!

@davidwestwood59687 жыл бұрын
oscodains I don't understand what you are saying?,are you comparing a 1,000,000 cat with used 50K mono?
@tigersharkzh7 жыл бұрын
The extra room can be deceiving. Whilst the interior volume may be great in most cases a cat will have a lot less load capacity. A cat will loose a lot of speed when you load it up for long distance off shore cruising. Cat owners are always counting the kilos ;-)
@clarkd19557 жыл бұрын
I think the living space on a mono is like living in basement. Also while sailing in reasonable winds, a mono is bent over so much that you need to be fastened to a safety line when moving around most of the boat. Hand holds are everywhere on a mono for good reason. Some very good cats (brand new) are in the 5-6 hundred thousand range, not all cost one million. They are more expensive than most monos but you get a lot more boat with a cat than the same length on a mono.
@thomasn37667 жыл бұрын
Dear Mr. Andrew. Regards load capacity, i think you are a bit out, cat can load heave, but reduce sail speed, then again a cat sails generally faster than mono, and if you load it then its sail as fast as a Mono, and in case you mention speed, well i would say if you are “causing” speed is the most important, but if you like to race it is but then you offload the boat to get it light as you would with a mono. And a cat is also equal easy to sail, and as a cruiser you might be in the conservative sailing mode, taking care of you boat and don’t overload the rigging, boat, or own capabilaty in sailing. Better be on the safe side, sail conservative, and be safe at any given time. fear wind, and following seas.

I had originally started this post as a response to someone saying Dan should marry Kika and get her a Canadian passport. Marrying a Canadian does not get you a Canadian passport. But Kika could get is Permanent residency card. After 3 years of Canadian residency she could apply for Canadian citizenship Luckily Kika only has to be "Traveling" with Dan, her husband/common law partner to qualify for the Residency requirement. But if They can prove that she lived with Dan in Common law relationship ,she can get a Permanent residency card. Kika can claim the time with Dan as residency time and may be able to get her citizenship much earlier. I have seen Filipinos get their citizenship within a month of their getting their residency (because they worked in Canada for years prior) . Looking at how long she has been with him she could apply for Canadian residency and Canadian citizenship Now! They can prove a 3 year common law relationship (the KZbin channel), which can get her the residency card, After being approved they will need to fly into Canada and remain until the card comes in the mail (usually 30 days). After they receive the Permanent residency card they can ask for a determination as to how much time she will be credited for. She could possibly get a Canadian passport within a year or less. Hope this helps.

Personally I prefer monohulls but one thing to keep in mind is this was a charter boat. Chater companies only care about the most berths at the absolute cheapest possible price so things like interior build quality is where cost is cut. There are incredibly well built blue water cats with good fit and finish but you are going to pay 30% to 60% more than a charter boat of the same size.

I humbly disagree. One or two hundred meters away and they can no longer find or catch fish? Sorry. I call B as in b and S as in s on that. Their entire island's economy thrives on tourism. My advice to people wanting a Cat is to sail on one first. My wife and I personally didn't like their motion. They move through the water differently than a monohull. It is also harder to find a haul out facility if you have an emergency repair to be made. On the other hand, they are floating castles!

There is an interesting human trait that could help here. Let's say you're on a beach, and want to leave your stuff and go get an ice cream. Someone comes up after you leave and steals your stuff, even though there are people right next to you. The people next to you won't intervene. However if you ask those people to watch your stuff, they will always intervene if someone tries to mess with your stuff, once they've agreed to keep an eye on it. If you're in a harbour with other cruisers, make a deal, that you'll all watch each others boats. They will go out of their way to do that. This is why it's also nothing but a win win to get to know your neighbours.

Every catamaran is different and sails different. You need to sail on our cat. We will keep you busy. Charter cats are made to be motored around not really sailed. We sail at about 8 kts often going 12 or more. We towed a monohull under sail at 8kts, from Martinique to Antigua. 180 miles
@nikolabolic71205 жыл бұрын
Well I get my charter catamaran up to 11-12kts close hauled... Its Lagoon 620... And I work with them in Caribbean. Mostly smaller ones like 45 feet that we have are like you say 8kts, 9 kts, but the bigger ones are up in middle 10kts and high 11kts. We have a bit of 52's, 57's. 58's and 620's... And if you sail beam reach, broad reach, that numbers can get even higher, especially with Fountaine Pajot 58 and L620... then is usually around 13-14 and is a wild sail and they can take it if you have a crew capable and knowing of what they do.

I really like mono-hulls, but I love catamarans. As with mono designs some are performance oriented, some are cruisers. The same is true for catamarans.
@JB-pu2li4 жыл бұрын
I don't see the point in chasing performance if you spend 95% + of the time anchored or moored and when you do sail your cruising around relaxing. If you take a few more days is it abit deal? I'm a rookie inexperienced sailor.
@tropicalday884 жыл бұрын
@@JB-pu2li Well, it depends on many factors which is why there are many different designs. My dream cat would be electric with enough performance to allow for decent battery regeneration. The amount of regen goes up significantly with speed. To achieve seed weight is an issue particularly with a cat. Although heavier boats typically have a smoother ride. Lots of trade offs, depends on priorities. Some love speed, other comfort. If it works for you, it's good for you.

I suppose don’t knock what you cannot afford. I know which I would prefer. Never too young to enjoy comfort. You’re both to be admired for doing what you do on such a tiny boat. Keep safe foremost xx

I have sailed and worked on different types of boats. The mono has my heart. If I were to take a sv again, my wish would be a Garcia 45 or 52.

I live in SW Minnesota, nothing but harsh winters, corn and bean fields. So I'm doing it wrong also. I do like your vids. I do an audio podcast called Infotainment, and am going to mention this. Places I will probably never see. Think I will call the episode Sailing Away.

I think cats and and monos are cool in their own way. (I don't own either and have only done spot/leisure sailing). Sailing a mono seems more true sailing, but thats just nostalgic feeling and I for a cruising boat Id prefer a boat thats more stable. Nearly keeling over seems more like sth to do in a sports sailing boat rather than my "house". + cats are more stable (then again without knowing to much about it I think tipping over a bit from a gust does provide relief on the sails and force on the boat which may serve as "safety feature" whereas a cats sails will stay at their proper angle till its to to late, either breaking point or possible sudden tipping and capsize) - feel less like proper sailing - need to rely on instruments more than on feeling to decide "how much wind is to much" - if you manage to capsize no chance of getting it right side up again without big help - usually more pricy + a lot more space at similar length both cabin wise and on deck, +tramp! (though I don't think you really should compare them of the same size but rather compare a cat to a mono quite a few feet/meters longer than the cat due to space & price both) + cats can stay in more shallow water + some cats can (if done right) be beached without damaging them + they often come with more windows / natural light - bobbing in rougher sees the waves slapping against the central structure can be VERY loud + a little bit of redundancy due to instruments, steering, rudder being on both hulls. + generally faster Regarding the fisherman while I feel that dragging another boat away and possibly not handling or securing it right is a big no no, with the exception of the boat causing or being in immedate danger, I can also imagine the "native" fisherman being annoyed of "invasive sailors" or tourists in their (perceived) fishing territory. That said I do believe conscious sailors, like conscious hikers to be the least invasive tourists possible and the way promotable.(for the lack of a better word right now) Also great to see from you again, love your Vlog its so personal and I love how much your'e doing on your boat yourself which shows you as less entitled than many other sailing vlogs. Keep up the great work, stay safe and enjoy yourselves.

Be careful what you say, 60 comes up a hell of a lot faster than you might imagine! I'm 59 next month: in my mind I'm your age and fortunately still fit enough to ride a large motorcycle. Perhaps that's why I'd still opt for the mono, something about heeling it over as far as I could. (I know, childish but fun.) Used to do that around the Cyclades islands and it's a lot to sacrifice for the living space of a cat.
@paparayg4 жыл бұрын
With a monohull you always "feel" what your boat is doing and make appropriate decisions based on any changes you "feel"! A catamaran is not like that. You don't really "feel" how the wind changes are affecting your boat. you "sail a monohull because it's "in" the water. You operate a catamaran because it's perched on top of the water.
@angela1984a3 жыл бұрын
There's also trimarans... There you'll get the "feel" back...

Great video. My wife and I love our cat, but then again we're in our mid-50's so maybe that explains it. ;) Like others, we chartered an Open 40 and weren't terribly impressed with build quality or layout. That's why we ended up with a Seawind!

Cats are great. More advantages than disadvantages, but they are expensive and big. Only big down side is finding slips for them. Great for scuba diving.
@martinc98674 жыл бұрын
there are fast cats also.but wind and waves goes definitely more on the structure than movements of the whole boat.

If I had the money, one of my boats would be a Seawind 1250. I love the 'cat' comfort, and their helm positions are both protected from sun/rain, the 'foldup' tri-fold doors into the salon are a great idea and the 360-degree view is awesome and level --- quality is good( they bought Corsair Marine, the trimaran company founded by one of the Walmart grandsons) --- The Tasmanian Sea trial reached 30-knots, SOG, so they can handle "FAST", but I can't...The other boat would be an Alberg 30-37 'full-keel' monohull.

A mono is a sports sedan. A catamaran is an RV. Similar to the difference between a motorcycle and a luxury car. You're both going down the same roads but the luxury car experience is almost like you're watching it on television. There's no fight on a catamaran. Nothing to push against. Sailing a mono is demanding. You literally have to pull together. A great metaphor for a healthy relationship.

Fun channel, weak review of the Nauticat Open 40, and of catamarans in general. To say it is slow.... I have seen open 40's do 20 knots. The charter version of any yacht is always the cheapest options. It would of been nice if you didn't generalize so much, and at the end of the day realized this was just one catamaran.

If you ask me, trying to compare a cat to a monohull is like trying to compare a custom motorcycle, like Harley Davidson, with a Big Trail, like a BMW or KTM. Both are motorcycles, but there ends what they have in common. Just different styles for different needs. It all boils down to what you want from it.

so sad to know that Mischief lost their boat in Irma, let's hope they get back on their feet soon. As for the Cat, well it was probably built as a charter boat anyways, so of course the quality won't be as good as an owner's version. I'd love to own a Cat myself but even the price tag of a decent used one would require a lottery win of epic proportions
@tedrenard4727 жыл бұрын
@Hua Thai. appreciate your opinion, man, but no-one deserves to loose their home, boat or not. The Mischief people had gone to St Martin for engine repairs before Irma was a definite, and the parts for the repair weren't available so they got caught in it. They were lucky, as being American meant they eventually got lifted out. Our thoughts, prayers and donations go to all of the island residents that lost more than their homes, but that doesn't give us a platform to start decrying others who, as it yet may appear, could be more fortunate than the rest. They aren't the only boat owners caught out there, and I don't believe they're the only ones asking for help either.

ted renard , I agreed with you, the nasty negative comment to sailing mischief, and some others, are totally uncalled for. People do not have any idea about what it like owning an old cheap boat all they see it 'rich people with yacht'. That so far from the truth. The 'Rich' people don't post a lot of videos so please keep you comments to your self and send your money to anybody you want and don't use it as an excuse not to help those in need. Cheers Warren
