Never heard of a "manual license" in the US. Driver's licenses are for every type of car, truck, etc. and you just have to pass the tests in a car that you can pass them in. Learning manual is just kind of a choice here tbh

In NZ there is something called a restricted license which is after your learners permit. When you get your restricted you are allowed to drive on your own but can't take passengers unless they have a full license. If you sit your restricted test in an auto, you get a condition that says you are only qualified to drive a car with an automatic transmission. When you pass your full I'm pretty sure that condition goes away. So perhaps Liam is misremembering that

Actually if you have a commercial driver's license in the US and you passed it on a semi truck that's automatic you are only allowed to drive automatic trucks. It's obviously not the case with a regular drivers license

What you asked about having a manual license I’ve never heard before in the US. You learn to drive whether is manual or automatic doesn’t matter. Now if you drive a truck, bike or if you’re a chofer then it changes.
