We cruised the Danube from Budapest to Nuremberg 2 years ago. On one of the tours, we were bussed to a nearby town to hear an organ recital in a cathedral. It was wonderful! We thought we left the church in time to get back to the bus but when we got there the bus had left without us! There was a Viking ship in that port, so we went on board and explained our dilemma, hoping they could get us back to our ship that wouldn't be too expensive. Well! They were most sympathetic. They contacted our ship and explained that we would have lunch with them and meet our group at the BierGarden tour in the afternoon. They took us with their group on the bus and we were able to meet up with our group there! I was so very impressed with the professionalism. We will take the Viking Mississippi in October since we had such a good European experience.

We had a similar experience on a RCL cruise in that - also during an organ concert - a few members in our excursion group started to feel ill, so the guide took them out. Unbeknownst to us several other people then started to also follow along to leave the church. We figured maybe they just had had enough of the concert; however, when we got outside, our group was nowhere to be seen. The guide never counted to make sure she had everyone! So we had to hitch a ride with another group to get back to the ship. We were most unhappy and made that known. Nothing really came of it other than a few apologies. We thought it was unconscionable for a tour guide to do what she did. It was especially unnerving since we were in a foreign country.

Some friends just returned from a Viking Bucharest to Budapest cruise. A few weeks prior the husband fell out of a golf cart and injured his hip. They thought about canceling but decided to go ahead. The husband expected to just hang out on the ship while his wife and their friends went out on excursions, but the Viking folks offered him a low-impact itinerary that didn’t involve a lot of walking.

We recently finished the Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. With a 3-day pre-excursion in Amsterdam and at least 1 excursion a day we were pretty tired on our next to last day. In Colmar we took the "leisure" version of the walking tour which took us through the town in a small "train." It turned out to be wonderful as we could actually see more as we were looking at the sites rather than looking down at the cobblestones that I'm convinced were trying to turn my tired ankles. I would highly recommend this option if you are tired...

Took a Danube river cruise on Viking 5 years ago. Our flight to the ship was cancelled and we had to find another albeit later flight. We ALMOST missed the ship as they were pulling up the gate as we arrived. We were out of breath and our first stop was THE BAR were we put our silver spirits package to good use. Our bartender understood and made us THE BEST gin and tonics ever! AND the best part our luggage was lost by the airline. The Viking crew coordinated the return of our luggage at the next port. The crew actually offered us THEIR clothes until our luggage arrived AND gave us free dry cleaning. This was over and above what I expected. The river was low so we had to change ships mid tour. Off on one ship and on to the next. Had to pack and unpack again. NOT Viking's fault. Overall we are looking to book again on a Viking river cruise but this time we will pay attention to river levels. Viking did kinda lie to us about this condition on the days before our journey. You must do your homework on a river cruise, as it is NOT like ocean cruising. Viking is not the most expensive or the least expensive. BUT for our trip it was just fine. People were great, DRINKIES we top drawer, and the food was also great. We are easily pleased and not snobs so everyone has their own opinions. Again we are looking forward to our next cruise on Viking either Rhine, or the Danube again.

My main gripe on your discussion of Viking River Cruises is - you can almost always eat on shore if you want to. We probably had four lunches on shore during the two week Grand European trip, and one dinner (in VIenna - it was FABULOUS!). Most Panorama bus tours included some walking. We're taking our second Viking River Cruise next spring. I think most ocean cruises would bore me to tears.

I've been on 7 Viking cruises (5 river, 2 ocean, scheduled for an 8th) as well as competing cruise lines. The tip about the magnetic hooks is a keeper! One thing about Viking staterooms is that there is no external clock, other than one on the TV if you have it on. Bring a small battery-operated clock, good for a quick glance to ensure you're on time. Your comment on reading the evening newsletter is spot on. We missed a tour due to its being pulled up and no announcement was made. Viking made it right, though, and we got reservations for another, better tour.

They have multiple levels of tours based on your fitness level. I don’t understand why you didn’t see this. As far as laundry self service facilities, it’s true that they would be nice but consider how much smaller the ships are compared to their other ships. Where would they put them? I agree that dining is very different and you cannot be shy. But again the ships are much smaller so they don’t have many options. You are 100% correct about mobility issues. Probably not for people with them.

I'm a firm believer that there are two types of luggage - carry on and lost... I only own a carry on bag and just returned from a three month trip (1 week in London+49 day ocean cruise to Brisbane+7 weeks in Australia and NZ. There is no need to bring everything you own just in case. Over the years I've Invested in merino wool tshirts and long sleeve tops and dress them up with scarves and jewelry. I generally bring 10 tops and 5 bottoms and everything must go with everything, so that's 50 combinations. Also, none of my tops have a pattern (your table mates at dinner won't recognize plain tops as easily when they come around again in a few days, plus the mix and match process is much easier without patterns. My late husband had a similar routine but with golf shirts and no iron collared shirts in sport fabrics, 1pr of real dress pants for dinner and 2-3 pairs of sport fabric trousers for daytime / excursions. He purposely chose a plain black, slim fitting bathing suit that passed for walking shorts so he didn't have to pack those as well. I keep looking at river cruises but haven't booked one yet. This video was a good overview of the differences with regular large ocean going ships. I didn't realize this line allowed you to bring on alcohol. I don't drink enough to buy a package so I usually just pay as I go, but picking up a bottle of local wine would be a nice option.

Very good overview of Viking river cruise. One important oversight though is there is no medical help or assistance if an accident or emergency arises. There were several people that fell ill on my cruise last October and one was even hospitalized with no assistance. I tripped and fell on my final disembarkation as there were no lights on deck before sunrise and didn’t see the raised edge of the gangplank. I had a gash on my eye, broken glasses and two broken bones in my hand. I was offered no medical help but sent on my way to fly from France to Ohio on my own. When I contacted Viking when I got home, their response was to file with my insurance and “accidents can and do happen.” I had to have surgery on my hand and six months of recuperation. If there had been lighting on the deck…it was pitch black…I wouldn’t have tripped. Viking is governed by European law so there was no recompense, or even apology for my accident. Buy travel insurance thru a third party, not theirs as the Viking trip insurance wouldn’t pay for my prescription glasses.

I just returned from New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S., after a cruise on the Viking Mississippi. It was listed as a twelve-day trip, although in truth only seven nights were actually aboard the ship, sandwiched between two-day stays in Memphis and New Orleans hotels. My feeling is that it was priced at a full 12-day cruise rate, despite being “on your own” for lunches and dinners for four days. The suite felt cramped, more so than I recall on Scenic in Europe, and the bed (half a separated queen bed) felt very narrow. The food was up to the standard I expected and the service was good. My friend and I used their air package and will never do that again. There were certainly more reasonably scheduled flights available 14:31 than leaving the West Coast at 5 a.m. and returning at midnight (or 2 a.m. NOLA time). Lesson learned there! Excursions generally interesting and informative. Some of the music in the Living Room was deafeningly over-amped. The infinity pool was half empty. There were no maps available of the localities we visited. Staff helpful and friendly. So, a mixed experience generates a mixed bag of comments!

@@AnnLynch100 The other side of that is that if something happens, they'll absorb the rebooking fees. I got a notice from the airline midnight Saturday night that my flight that Monday was canceled and rescheduled to Tuesday. Viking had to get my a new homebound itinerary less than 24 hours before departure. If I did that on my own it would have been expensive and annoying, but since they did it, I just went on my excursion Sunday and it was all fixed when I got back. Full disclosure: I did the 2-week one where coach flight is included in the cruise, and I did the upgrade to business class ($2k/person at the time). We also did the $100/person fee for changing our arrival date and got a hotel in Amsterdam, just in case. (I was advised that you should always plan to get to your start port a day early.) We have found European river cruises be more enjoyable than ocean cruises. Much more relaxed and being iff the beaten track provides a chance to see how the tastes and lifestyles of people in smaller cities of towns. I think river cruises to be about learning about touring as opposed to cruising. This fall we are doing a Bike Boat tour between Passau Germany and Budapest. We will be doing a self guided route route of 25 mile to 35 miles per day on the Danube river bike path. Lots of preserved history, natural beauty as well as some of the best beer and white wine in the world to enjoy as we cruise.

I'd hate being cooped up in one of those floating hotels, ploughing across the Atlantic with nothing to look at. Those cruises must appeal mainly to people who like being on a ship, not visiting places. The only other cruise I have ever don was Cairo to Aswan on the Nile. That really was mainly sitting on an open deck gently pootling along with stops to visit interesting ancient sites. Mind you there was a nasty outbreak of tummy trouble, but what do you expect in Egypt? On the whole the food was good. That must have been more than 30 years ago.

@missharry5727 This is about river cruisds in Europe, not ocran cruises. They are not "plowing across the Atlantic." You're in port every day, with on-land tours in daytime. The ships are smal--200-250 people. Not at all like an ocean cruise (which doesn't appeal to me, either)
@missharry57275 ай бұрын
@CherylBoone-Delgado-nr5kc yes, I was looking at the alternatives. We fly to Bucharest on 25 June for a cruise on the Danube to Budapest and back. What I couldn't bear is an ocean cruise in one of those monstrosities I see in harbour when I visit Southampton for a bit of shopping and a look at the Solent.

Interesting. On my only cruise ever, Viking's Waterways of the Tsars, there was a dr. on board. But also, when a passenger had an alarming episode, Viking staff took them to a nearby hospital. You're in port almost every night. I don't care for much about ocean cruises, so the Viking cruise was perfect. I loved meeting almost everyone; staff were extremely nice & helpful, and the excirsions covered almost everywhere I wanted to go. I stayed two extra days in St Petersburg after the end of the cruise, and the Viking staff called me a cab and made sure the driver knew where I was to go. (Tip: that cruise is no longer available, for what should be obvious reasons)

I did not like the no announcement policy, so I wrote Mr Torstein Hagen, the owner and complained. Viking is a very top down company, with all decisions coming from high up. And indeed for our next Viking, the announcements we back, but only in the hallway, so you had to stand by your door. But all decisions from up high, means that you will receive the exact same experiencing on all ships. So as opposed to other cruise lines, where you have to decide between which ship, all Viking ships are the same. We also love the small ship experience. The river ships are 180 and the ocean are 900 passengers. No mobs, fast lines.

My friend & I started out on Viking taking the Rhine & Danube river cruises. For ocean we've taken the Mediterranean, Viking Homelands & British Isles. We would have had a couple more in there, or more but because of the covid thing, we didn't go anywhere during that time. We have not had any problems on any of these trips and have had very helpful people all along the way and on the boats & ships. One trip, the flight was delayed out of Toronto so that we missed our connecting flight in Frankfurt. Wow, what a time that was but Viking people showed up and picked us up when we arrived finally. I've travelled quite a bit over the years including Egypt, Israel, Jordan & Australia 6 times etc. with other companies and Viking, to me/us is the best. Each to his own.

I liked you mentioned maybe walking through another ship. At every port it seemed like Viking had at least 3 ships 'rafted' together. What you didn't mention was the other downside of the rafting - no view out your window and keeping your drapes drawn so others can't see into your room [this is true on all rafted ships - not just Viking]. The one time paying for a balcony is no benefit, but cruising down the river itself, it's great.

Just got back from the Budapest to Regensberg,Germany. It was my first Viking River tour. The good: I appreciated the included walking tours and the great tour guides. Loved the coffee machine. The staff was top notch. Rooms kept clean. Plenty of room for clothing even on level 1 with just a window. Glad we didn’t pay more for the balcony since most days boats were parked beside our boat blocking the views of the balconies. Loved there were no kids. I don’t drink but beer and wine was nice for those who do. : The rooms are small, but clean, great shower water pressure and complimentary toiletries. The beds weren’t very comfortable, neither were the pillows. The wifi was as non existent. The food was just ok. Enough for me but would not be enough for my husband had he been with me. I wish there were more options. Also wish there was an option for snacks during the day other than cookies. If you miss lunch there’s nothing else to eat or no other place to go other than cookies.

Very good info about this cruise. Very accurate and easy to understand. having done ocean and river, I do have an issue with the magnetic hooks though. On both we have found there is plenty of closet and drawer space to handle 15 days. You can ask for extra hangers. the walking spaces are narrow and items on the walls get in the way. People don't consider the room stewards. They have to maneuver around the coats, bags, hats and other bulky items. I have even seen hooks used on the ceiling on ocean. The crew of course will never complain because they are trained to be respectful and want to please. They do an exceptional job. Cruisers should give them the same respect and not make their jobs harder.
@SharonPerson-hm9ds2 ай бұрын
@khead55 - On our last three ocean cruises, I brought magnetic hooks. They were especially handy for our 12 night Scandinavian cruise. We used a few hooks above the desk for upcoming excursion tickets; we had no clutter on the desk, and no searching through drawers for the tickets. We used one hook for a hat, and a few in the bathroom to hang damp hand laundered clothes that would not have dried in a closet or in a shower we used daily. We also never left items on the sink or counter, either. Our last hook was used to hang a small USA Patriotic decoration, since we were in Europe on July 4th. The magnetic hooks helped to keep our stateroom very tidy, and did not cause any access issues for the staff.

Took a cruise in the late fall of 2023 passau to budapest. The water levels were too low so we were bussed the last portion of the trip to budapest. i found out that this stretch of the Danube was impassable for the past month yet viking never told us in advance. We should have been told in advance so we could reschedule our trip. You get the feeling that they are nickel and diming you buy not offering free soft drinks during the day. I paid $5 for a small bottle of soda. ridiculous. the tours are good the food is above average yet the breakfast is the best. I hated being herded into the dining room with the masses for dinner . I along with about 40 passengers caught the Norovirus and the kitchen didn't have any speicail accommodations for us. you would think on a river cruise where perons often et such viruses that Viking would have food to assist in recoveing like chicken broth and ginger ale. yes they ran out of ginger ale and were too cheap to pick up supplies. One of the selling points is that they will periodically pick up food supplies along the route to give passengers a taste of the local food. No they supply all of the food to the ship the day of embarkation. The crew was excellent and accomodating but i felt the cruise was a bit overpriced. viking could charge less if they would stop sending 2 to 3 expensively produced sales brochures every week.

Definitely agree about the amount of marketing Viking sends out! Insofar as Viking service, it's true that they are not set up to handle routine medical issues but that's more likely due to the fact that they're close to cities most of the time and rely on the locals. We were on a Budapest to Amsterdam cruise where a passenger fell and broke his arm before we left Budapest. While he was treated at a local hospital (that's a horror story in itself), Viking insisted he see a doctor in Vienna and even arranged transportation to and from the clinic. Now, on our 2022 Douro cruise (where cities/villages are non-existent on the river), it was less than satisfactory. Passengers got on the bus to the ship, complaining of feeling 'ill' and blaming it on food they ate. The cruise director didn't bother to suggest they wear masks and, thus, this 'food poisoning' quickly spread like wildfire (we're sure it was a Norovirus). Many passengers (and crew) spent time in their cabin while Viking's officers were too busy glad-handing and perfecting their comedy routines to enact sanitary measures. Our Aunt spent four out of seven days in her cabin and the caring room staff brought her broth and tea throughout the day.
@KarenAllen-iq4jy7 ай бұрын
@@jking5907 There was a virus on our ship too…I said in another reply that there were many on our ship that were stuck in their room with no room service or assistance from the crew. Their partners/roommates had to walk into town to find a pharmacy for meds. When I tripped I was offered no medical assistance at all, when it was obvious I was injured. In a foreign country, where you don’t speak the language, and at the cost of the cruise you expect some assistance. If I hadn’t had another passenger help me I don’t know what I would have done since I was in shock. The Viking desk staff just hurried me on to my airport shuttle. It was before dawn and my sister was still asleep as she had a much later flight. In hindsight I should have insisted someone wake her up.

We did a river cruise around 10 years ago down the Seine in France. We did not like the fact that most nights we were tethered to another boat due to the short dock available . So, if you are on the wrong side, looking out your window/ balcony, you were five feet from the tethered boats occupants. Very intrusive. I loved my Viking river cruise. Except the dinning situation in the evening. We eat much earlier than 7pm so that was an adjustment. But what needs to also be mentioned is that if you are like me and don’t eat entree, you wait even longer for your meal. Everyone is served each course at the same time, so I had to wait (even longer) for my meal until it was time to serve the main meal. I also like to eat in peace and forced conversation at the dinning table was also not for me. So for my next Viking river cruise (should I do one) I will be bringing containers to pack a meal from the lunch menu to eat at my regular meal time. I only have the one small course in the evening so this is the only way to achieve this. My river cruise was two weeks and I couldn’t keep doing the late meal so I ended up eating the cookies and pastry’s for most of the cruise. Take containers.
