I live a few miles from a small non-towered airport. I am on the downwind/left base for the runway. They fly directly over my house. Not too long ago we heard a sputtering engine while grilling on my deck. It was cutting out bad like it was out of fuel or had bad fuel or the filter was clogged. It was too cloudy to see. But an hour after I go to pick up my boys from baseball practice and sure enough there was a Cessna 172 sitting in a field several hundred feet from the runway! There were already a few vehicles in the field with it and I could see the cowling was off and they were using a truck bed gate as their workbench. By the time I got the boys and passed again, it was gone. So whatever it was must have been minor and easily fixed. But that just goes to show how quickly it can go to hell in a hand basket and how you must be prepared at all times. I wish I knew for certain what it was, but I didn't want to bother them being a Nosey Nellie.

Mike and Chandra, just another huge thank you for all you did for us. Your kindness and generosity did so much to turn a stressful situation into a very meaningful experience. I hope you both know how grateful we are to have you in the aviation community. I so enjoyed getting to know you and hope our paths cross in the future. Also, I can’t agree with you more about the safety factor provided by a satellite communicator. My In-Reach goes everywhere with me in the plane and in the backcountry. I won’t fly without one. Sincerely, thank you again. - Matt

I've been eyeing the inreach for a while now. I have a tendency to end up in incredibly remote places, sometimes alone. I've been stranded and had to walk out a couple times. Truthfully, I think its probably something I should start carrying when I go out in the Jeep or on the dirt bike. Hearing from someone that does search and rescue how frequently you have seen this being something that could be a life saver, I might just order one tonight.

There was a 42 year old man who just died out riding his Quad. It got too dark to find him so they waited till the next day. They think he was riding drunk, and drove off the gravel road. He wasn't wearing a helmet, and hit a tree killing him instantly! I have gotten turned around in the woods, and it doesn't feel good. The last time I was drinking beer, and almost got heatstroke! Thank god a friend happened to find me. He didn't know I got turned around.

On the subject of how an incident can change your life... I am with Mason County SAR in WA. Was recently called out for a missing quad rider. We found him. He was coming down a gravel road with a significant drop off on one side. He missed the turn. Cant say for sure if helmet jacket gloves boots and pants would have saved him but im pretty sure he would have lived. Now I ride with all the gear all the time ATGAT. Its not a matter of IF your going to crash it WHEN! We all spill a bike eventually. Keep up the good work! Now its time for me to get back to work!

Great channel Mike, and fantastic job on their part. I had the same failure back in my flight instructor days. Luckily mine happened at 6,000 feet over ONT airport, and I still had partial power all the way down. When I was in my early 20's, I too never really worried about engine failures, even instructing in the mountains out of Rangely, CO, or flying over the water in the LA area. It's good to be young and immortal 😃. I'm glad to have two turbine engines now.

Back in 1974, after taking off from a sod runway at a major International airport,and my instructor pulled it at < maybe > 300AGL on takeoff. Back then there was a Interstate bridge over a 100" deep river valley just off the departure end about 120° to the left that was under construction -- The Interstate wasn't complete yet - and he wanted me to set up to land on that bridge... I had maybe 8 hours - no I just looked at my logbook and it was 3.6 hours -- I froze...

The 121.5 Mhz emergency channel is supposed to work by you being able to contact a commercial plane flying overhead. In UK we have planes overhead for most of the country. Maybe in some of your remote areas there may be a lack of them.

We had an Inreach in the group on my Doubtful sound trip, they're a brilliant device. I'd set off a PLB first, they're first and foremost an emergency device, the Inreach would be for a lower level of emergency myself. a PLB is also a single purpose device with a one time use battery, so there is no chance of forgetting to charge it.

Just a comment - I carry my InReach in my POCKET. You never know if you are going to be separated from your airplane/car/boat/motorcycle/whatever after a crash or an incident. If your airplane goes down, you get out only to watch it burn, that InReach tucked in the back of the seat or in your flight bag isn't going to do you a whole lot of good. Ditto if you are injured - you might be able to pull it from your pocket, but can you go back, get your flight bag, find the thing, and activate it with a broken leg? Oh, and BTW - I have a souvenir piston very much like that one hanging on my garage wall. :)

Awesome, I have the InReach for my sidexside rides, and most of them are just my wife and I. Have not had to use it, but it’s nice to know if I need mechanical help or medical, it’s just a text away. We did tip the sidexside on its side going from Beaver Ski Resort to Fish Haven FR trail 304 and was able to do a self rescue with the winch and gear I had on board. Thought about using the inReach if we weren’t able to get it upright. Thanks for sharing and all you give back to the community. I carry the small inReach on my person, clipped either to a belt loop or in a vest if I am wearing one. Even on short hops around the patch...if the airplane goes down even locally there is no guarantee it will be visible to bystanders once it comes to rest, and no guarantee that I'll be able to access anything in the cockpit other than what is on my person. I also sent one with my daughter when she went to Mexico for a mission trip. We could see where she was all the time, and she could communicate, and she had a way of sending up the "electronic red star cluster" if things went south for her while down south.

I've experienced two engine failures while flying a Rotax powered UL. The training I got made my response to the engine failure automatic. All my previous instructors stressed that you fly the plane above all else. That worked well for me.
@ulbuilder

I'm assuming a 2-cycle Rotax? I had my 2nd engine out with a 2-cycle engine a few days ago, I'm done flying behind a 2 cycle engine. My Instructor also did a great job preparing me for the inevitable to the point that nose down when the engine hickups is instinctive. Aviate, navigate, communicate and fly it till it stops.
@jimseals8659
@jimseals8659 2 жыл бұрын
@@ulbuilder Yes, good old Rotax 503. My engine was one off one of the Goodyear Blimps, old style with single ignition. First failure, the ignition module failed at about 200 feet on takeoff. Having been trained to use all the runway, it was easy to drop the nose and put it back on the runway. The second was a cold seizure, I hadn't changed jets between summer and winter. Out about six miles from the airport, I chose a handy hay field and put it down. I found out that terraces are very hard to see until you are right on top of them and committed! I was able to use the plane again.

Makes sense with anything battery powered to be able to carry an independent spare battery. It would be heart breaking to find it dead the one time you really needed it. Batteries have a way of doing that. Even a rechargeable (sometimes the charge cord wiggles out/sometimes the battery just quits taking a charge) is better if it can be changed out and takes a common battery. When you are talking about something the size of a penlight battery that is the difference between being rescued and not there is no down side to having the capability of changing a dead one out.

Hi Mike, I love your channel content. Thanks for the contributions you make to the aviation community. I agree with you that having a GPS tracking device is essential now. There is no reason to go without one especially when flying over remote areas. I would like to see you do a comparison video showing what is available for us and the pro's & con's. I elected not to use a Garmin. The cost was not really the factor because the benefits outweigh the cost. I wanted something with more versatility and went with ZOLEO. Check it out, it's a pretty cool device. Stay safe and I hope to meet you in person some day.

I'm not Mike but I can tell you how I feel. Unless you are in a bush plane or living in an area with safe suitable off-field landing locations, multi engines are a must. In the event of an engine failure they will give you time to find a suitable landing site. But hey that's just my two cents.
@DanFrederiksen

You are a big care bear, it's beautiful :) Does ADS-B give final location these days or can it be out of reach? ballistic chute makes a difference too. Or a 1.5kg reserve personal chute can be convenient if control surfaces fail. Failure of single piston is one of the reasons that a turbofan product for a pressurized 300kg 4 seater would be such a revolution. Maybe 15kg, natural twin engine config and by its speed has private jet freedom. It's not on you to make happen at all but you seem uniquely able, Mark and on the upside it might be a half billion dollar company in short order for what is a relatively simple product. Because a jet is simple the TBO is typically much better than pistons and you have two. And the small size really helps on the material strength side versus a Rolls Royce Trent. The profound thing is that a turbofan jet engine has the world distance record of 40000km without refueling while going 500km/h. What Cessna 150 can do that. So we can have the simplicity, low weight, speed, vibration free, quiet and fuel efficiency. And safety.

Just out of curiosity, how safe is it to fly the plane out? I can imagine that a broken valve being mashed up by the piston will put additional stress on the crankshaft and conrod. With prop strikes we are always told to get the engine teardown and check the crank. This is obviously different, but by how much? Are the extra torsional forces comparable to a prop strike? Or not at all??

The gentleman seen working on it is an A&P mechanic for a large FBO here and he instructs at an A&P program. He’s very sharp. If there was concern about it, the plane would’ve stayed where it was another day. Thankfully, the engine is very common and parts are readily available, so they had everything they needed. 👍

one word of warning about those sat alert systems, they depend on where you are in the world for their reliability. I seen a false emergency search and rescue in the Patagonia of a hiker a few years ago, that was intiated by the family due to them not receiving a "o.k." signal for a couple days. The 18 year old went up a very deep valley, in far south of the Patagonia. The sats were situated north around the equator, so the signal was not getting out of the valley. family flew to south america. They must have dropped $50,000. Turned out the kid was fine, and was just hanging out at a rock climbers camp with dozens of other people. Funny thing is, when I first heard about it, my first thought was, 'he is up that valley". I had been up there on horse back, and knew radio signals were flaky. The local guides bounce the radio signals off the rock walls to reach the other end of the cannon, and they can not do it at every place. Moral of the story, have multiple means of communication.

The pieces of piston and all, get sucked up in the intake low pressure area and go into the other cylinders. Been there done that!

emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs) should be made mandatory for all aircraft as well as all boats, IMHO.

I take a garmin on every trip, even if I'm going to be in Cell range. The very first day I activated my inreach I had to use it. I found a disabled truck on a stretch of highway. 70km from cell range on Vancouver island. At the time I took two of the 4 people back to the nearest town so they could call a tow truck. I went back and waited with them for the truck. But at the time I forgot to fuel up myself, so I couldn't get back again. Well the tow truck got there at midnight.... and broke down. The tow driver couldn't call for help, no one else was coming on the highway that late. So I used the garmin to text the people I had dropped off in town. They were able to call another tow truck, and even the owner of the first tow company came out. He said "I got this strange text from some random number about my driver being broke down in the middle of nowhere, I need to get one of these inreach things!!" If I hadn't had my inreach, everyone would have had to stay the night in cold fall conditions in the middle of nowhere. Probably not life threatening, but sure not pleasant!

The locating beacons are sooo important to those of us who participate in outdoor adventures. I do abandoned mine exploring, so we travel in very remote regions of the desert southwest. If we were overdue, it could take days or weeks just to locate our vehicle. Now we "ping" our location before we go underground and again when we exit. S&R would know EXACTLY where to start a rescue if something happens. Cell phones are wonderful, but you shouldn't bet your life on one. Thanks for the follow up on the Cessna!

I've always thought carrying an EPIRB when heading remote was a really good idea. That piston is one to keep on the wall. Great to see the bird back at the airport for a full check.

Great improvement in the audio quality on this video Mike. Thanks for thinking of our old ears and investing in the DJI wireless microphone kit - they sound awesome.

I've always wondered why Mike didn't have better microphones.... I don't think he's short on cash. I mean, he could always sell one of his planes and buy a mic. :)

@@RealRickCox Adding radio microphones adds to the complexity and time of editing a video as sound and video tracks need to be synchronised together - if they are not hard wired. Our great thanks needs to be extended to Mike and his behind the scenes team for this extra commitment to add to our enjoyment of the videos they publish for us to watch for free

My father was an aerial ag pilot (crop duster) and many years ago his Pawnee engine swallowed a valve while he was on his way out to spray a field, with a full load of spray on at low altitude. Ag airplanes have a big dump gate on the bottom of the hopper that dumps the whole load in seconds to lose that weight, so he pulled the dump handle and jettisoned the load then landed in the middle of a grain field. No damage to him or the airplane other than the engine. Did shake him up a bit though, but he handled it well. They pulled the airplane to a nearby country road, replaced the engine and he took off again from that road. Back to Work, Ha 💪💥💨

I’m pretty sure he wasn’t ferrying while commercially operating but it’s a cool story.

@@mopar92 well geez sorry, he wasn't ferrying the airplane per say, it was airworthy and not in need of a ferry permit. It was just a word to mean he was on his way (ferrying) out to spray a field ok. And it is a true story! The herbicide he was carrying kill a good sized patch of grain in that field but he knew and had sprayed for that farmer and the farmer was ok with it. There I took ferrying out, Are you better now?
