National outrage and political backlash ensued after the tragic sinking of M.V. Sewol, which claimed the lives of more than three hundred passengers, most of whom were students on a school trip, five years ago. Yi Seung-jun's film "In the Absence," an Academy Award nominee for Best Short Subject Documentary, details the tragedy and aftermath.

this is seriously the worst thing. like.. you're in a chopper. how do you know? oh i saw 3 people leave the ship. and no one else is leaving the ship. if there were more people, they'd have left the ship by now... like what kind of brain do all these people have.

@@stvnynd4265 Actually no. There were frew crews who helped some of the students to safely get off. But sadly couldn't help them all. I remember there being a teacher who guided some of the students to the top of the ship to be saved. But she couldn't help herself. The only one at the fault here is the Captain since he was the first one to get off and he was acting as if he was apart of the students/teachers etc. He didn't help and he told everyone to stay put and wait for help. If he told everyone to try to get out slowly and carefully maybe a lot more of the students would have been saved. But those kids stayed in the ship and didn't even try to get out because they listened to what was said on the speakers and waited for the help to arrive. Students who didn't listen to what was said, got out and got saved.

Only advice you can give to anyone on a sinking ship is: 1. Don't get trapped inside. Stay outside, stay on top, stay visible for rescuers. 2. If there's time, find anything you can use to float with/on once the ship has sank. 3. If you can see land, make your way towards it.

I saw a video of a student saying that he is still so young and there is so much more he wants to do and see. Therefore he wants to survive. After hearing that the tears that I held back just came down. I can't believe I'm waisting my young years doing nothing while I have the chance to do everything I want. I will value my life more and make it worth the while. I will spend my life doing what I want and seeing what I want to see. For me, and for the young people who can't. I have learned a lot today.

Even almost 10 years later, how everything happened still disgusts me deeply and fills me with sorrow to my core. They had their priorities so screwed up. "Any agent who steps on deck will be a hero." "What a shame. We should've gone earlier and made a good scene." They were so concerned with a good image and saving face that they let hundreds of children preventably die for it. How could you have the gall to ask people to trust in and follow authority ever again, when these are the people in positions of authority? A captain leaves the vessel last and a nation's leader does not "laze around" or "play hooky" when their citizens are dying - that's for immature teenagers, not for adults who are responsible for others' lives. Park Geunhye should've stayed in prison and rotted there, together with all the other lazy, complacent, neglectful sacks of hot air who made it come to this.

In thier mind, it could be like this: They knew nothing bout ship That captain must know bout his own ship better than us who only know how to pay ticket moving panickly could make ship center gravity become much worse than it already are The captain might try to keep us in order To facilitate for proper & more efficient evacuation process Rather than mindlessly running through ship like maze & disrupt evacuation Too bad that captain dicide to panick more than the confused passanger

This so heartbreaking, couldn't stop crying. I feel hurt for the students and the diver who lost their lives. The kids waited patiently to be rescued as they followed orders to stay put but to no avail. I offer my sincerest condolences to their families. It's so sickening how the government and coast officials did not put much effort in rescuing people. They focused rather on 'camera' and wasted time which caused deaths. Shame on them. The civilian divers/rescuers have way better judgement and character. I applaud their bravery and kindness.

Yeah, the radio communication was solid evidence of gross negligence. And Gross Negligence is a grave criminal offense in most countries. Were these officials not prosecuted? I find it mind-blowing that SK law had them walk away like nothing happened and poured all the blame at the captain.

they assumed so because the ones in the cabin are the ones who should go out last and the captain is the one who should administer for instructions or who should be the one who made the call. if nobody is in the cabins that SUPPOSEDLY means no civilian will be inside the ferry...but because of the selfishness of the captain who escaped then told everybody to stay put - the civilians died.

The most disturbing aspect of this tragedy was that it was completely avoidable. Almost everyone on that ferry could have been saved if it weren't for the cultural need to put public image ahead of peoples lives. Instead of staging a rescue, misleading the public and then attempting a cover up, the authorities could have actually organised a successful rescue and saved hundreds of lives.
