As much as I enjoy Sucharita’s quick reviews and her content (on most days) I just can’t agree with her thoughts here in this review! Hinduism is such that gives freedom of all kinds …. Chahe church jao ya masjid Hinduism will never say ki ab tum Hindu nai rahe ya Kafir ho . And what all you are discussing are rarest audience reaction that someone complained about presence of meat , or not enough Jai Shri Ram chant. Hinduism gives full freedom to enact their Gods n Goddess be it in films, festivals , Ram Leela happening on streets across the country, theatres , school functions even… but the main underlining is to do it correctly and if not correctly then at least don’t do it in this appalling way as Adipurush has done!And that’s the major complaint not what you discussed. If Gen Z kids are feeling dreadful after watching this then I don’t understand why you are complaining about us complaining? What’s wrong with you guys?? And if you are “fascinated “ with what’s happening around this film, even I am “fascinated “ with the same argument starting with same words, “ why in this country …”

I am afraid you both missed one point completely. The makers announced that this is real Ramayana, no changes at all. If they had said it is inspired and had not done all the drama of leaving seats empty for Hanuman ji all this brouhaha won't have occurred. Maniratnam's Raavan was 'based' on Ramayana and in the end 'Ram' came out looking evil. Nobody objected because nobody said the movie was based on Ramayana.

Rahul is missing the core point. Makers tried to promote the film as “Ramayan”. Not as an “adaptation”. Prerelease , they never uttered the word inspired or adapted. They tried to play both sides and got exposed.
@rishy_thepro Жыл бұрын
Quite disappointing to see Rahul repeatedly mentioning that he is not offended and he kept mentioning political agenda and intolerance several times. The audience has been tolerant and accommodating of various movies that have interpretations of ancient texts like RRR, Maniratnam’s Raavan etc. But if such a big size of audience is offended by Adipurush, it is because the movie has evidently taken the interpretation and creative liberties in tangent and has rubbed our emotions on the wrong side. Most of the audience who are offended, don’t necessarily belong to right or left wings. We are just hurt by the way the ancient text has been mutated out of line, in the name of creative liberty. Suchitra tried several times to cover up saying the makers have taken something so dear to all of us and made it into something unacceptably different. But Rahul kept taking same stand. Expected a much more liberal review from him.

Ramayan has a lot of good messages and values to provide to this generation, but filmmakers with corrupt western mentality does a mess with the topic. That Japanese anime legend of Prince Rama has a lot of flaws but the intent, devotion and love of the makers can be seen in that film, which is completely missing in adipurush. The makers have destroyed the essence of the epic. It's okay to have one's own interpretation of Ramayana. I mean we have literature where Ramayana has been told from Sita Maa's perspective as well. But the essence of Ramayana was always about how man can choose to be good even in the worst of circumstances. Leave the finer nuances of Ramayana, the makers have just sidelined some of the most important characters of this epic- Lakshman being one such character! It's fair to say that this venture is nothing but a money making device banking on the star power of Prabhas!

I think it eventually comes down to "intent" of the filmmakers that is obvious when a film comes out. When their intentions are to tell a good visual story(mythology or otherwise), people don't seem to mind. Most of us are offended by the sheer lack of all - the respect to the source material, detailing to all aspects of filmmaking like SFX, Editing, Dialogues, etc. It feels like everything in Adipurush was decided over a 1 hour meeting. Like they cast Prabhas and called it a day (what I felt during the promotions as well). As a film (and Indian mythology) loving audience, this is just offensive and that's why most people are pissed. It feels like their intent was to make easy money at the box office (because a Hindu story will bring folks to the theatre) and not to make a good film/epic retelling. I could be wrong but just personal thoughts🥲

Ghar More Pardesiya did a better Ramlila in 3.5 minutes (excusing the dance bits), than this movie. I was watching it recently on TV and for the first time, I noticed the subtle details in the background while Alia walks around before she ends up in Madhuri's house. The movie wasn't great or anything but in the song, the director tried some interesting storytelling techniques. Like watch the little snippet at just after the first hook line - you see Alia's character walk past the fiery laxman-rekha. What a clever little foreshadowing moment. Again, when Alia and Varun cross, there is a massive ravaan in the background, indicating his character. Then he grabs her hand, and if notice from before, ravaan was holding Sita's hand exactly in the same way just in the scene before where they have jatayu scene in the play version. And both the viman that ravaan had in the scene before and the boat Alia takes have the same bird's head thing at the front. Storytelling max pro!

No I think Mr Rahul, you missed the point completely.. We/The people arent mad for their creative liberties.. They are mad about the creative liberties filmamkers took are poorly executed. Also they marketed the movie as no changes in ramayan and now changing a plethora of details.. So Its about the LIES too.. And above all thats some POOR filmmaking with lack of intent and no soul.. This should be debated. Even the worst movie (lets say Kisi ka bhai), have a clear plan and vision that no story, just make money with salman in it. But with adipurush even that vision is not clear and its a terrible plan to make money.., lets say they just wanted to make money by taking prabhas, and take hindu mythology story.. but atleast make the movie a bit easier for people to sit through not having objectionable scenes every now and then.. In short.. Its about intent, positive attitude and vision of filmmaker that makes a movie thrive, irrespective of the disscourse around.

Just one thing…rahul mentioned the Mughal rule. Just the way the British came and colonized the country and made us feel inferior, so did Mughals. They too were foreigners who came and looted us and were ruthless colonizers in a different way. Hindus did suffer under the Mughal rule, and yet we had a film that romanticized akbar (who did bare minimum for the Hindu people during his rule). Khilji was not some Saint, so there isn’t anything wrong in the way he is portrayed. I am not Islamophobic, but I am also not scared to say that Mughals were oppressive looters, just like the Brits.

It's unnecassary to bring people's reception of Kashmir or Kerela story here because exaggerated or not those stories are somewhere based on reality and real experiences of people. This is an epic that holds faith of millions of people. Call it mythology,history,real,fake or folklore but it holds such an importance in life of an entire community for ages. Audience are not the real problem here, they never were. Had this movie been respectful to the source material, people would have forgiven all big or small mistakes or inaccuracies. There are so many mythological shows on TV and most of them are done pretty well and loved by audience throughout the world and not just India. If the makers had put even a little bit of heart in this project, it wouldn't have turned out the way it did. From start it was quite evident that this is a cash grab. There is absolutely no problem with reinterpretation of epics. But the core of the story should remain same if you are promoting it in that manner. The makers of Adipurush never said that this was a movie which would be told from a different perspective, or with a different vision. They promoted the movie as being 'Ramayana' with taglines like 'Victory of Good over Evil'. So obviously people thought that they would be witnessing this epic but on a grander scale and with great Visuals. They brought their kids to watch and learn from the Ramayana. What they got instead was a complete abomination and disrespect towards this great story. The story which teaches us about 'Dharma and Adharma', about 'Satya and Ahankar', about 'Brotherly Love', about 'Ethics' about 'Maryada' and so much more. There was not even a hint of these in the movie. Ofcourse people will get offended. If you are going to use these cringe dialogues coming out from the mouth of Lord Hanuman, who is himself a great scholar, of course people will get offended. If you wanted to use such dialogues, then set the movie in a different period, simple. You cannot set it in Treta Yuga and use dialogues like 'Bharat ki beti' and 'Gaad do ahankard ke chaati pe Bhagwa dwaj'. There was no concept of Bharat untill Mahabharata which happened after Ramayana. Of course people will get offended. In Treta Yuga, even enemies would talk to each other with utmost respect. And where are the lessons of Dharma and Adharma in this movie? The makers have just made this movie as a cash grabbing scheme and this movie is nothing but a scam. Ravana was a great scholar who was led into path of destruction only because of his 'Ahankar'. And what did the makers make him look like in here? Where is the dialogue between Kumbhakarna and Raavan? And why is Lanka a coal mine? And why are Lankans all wearing Black? There are many reasons to get offended.

Amish reinterprets history and is a very well respected artist in the country. The makers of Adipurush just messed with the wrong civilizational, evolution memories and emotions, expectedly or unexpectedly. I think it has backfired mainly because the country was eager in conveying to the younger generation the stories we grew up with and a 3hr movie would have been a massive tool in creating a cultural shift in many important aspects, if was used right. It's terribly beyond belief that the sloppy writing, casting, VFX and almost all areas of film making took massive hits and were yet able to gather 600crores to do this hideosity, is heartbreaking.

@valaja1458 I understand your point, dear. I also agree with you that the movie is a pretty bad movie as a whole and we dislike it for that reason only. But, there are a number of people protesting against the movie or boycotting it for some weird reasons. And this trend is nothing new. We have seen in the past few years that any movie can get banned or boycotted for some strange reasons. That is the scariest thing happening in our country, and we're talking about that. And talking about creative liberty, there was an adaptation of Ramayana aired a few years ago called "Siya ke Ram." Though that TV series has typical problems of Indian serials, the script writer and the actors still have done a great job. In that serial, Sita counter questioned Ram about his duty and failure as a husband. This is just before when Sita goes inside the earth. This is also creative liberty, and the makers used it so beautifully. But, if you watch the comments on this scene, you'll shudder. The comments are like "Devi Sita never questions Lord Ram like that. She always kept her head down, and so many like these. Do you really think the people who comment like these or ask why Kriti Sanon doesn't have a ghunghat, will accept Sita as "warrior princess"? This is actually the problem of the current situation. We forgot to tolerate and understand others' perspectives. We can all agree that 'Adipurush' is a bad film for different valid reasons, but not for the weird reasons of some people.

They sidelined Lakshman, have handed cringe dialogues to Hanumanji, sexualized Sarma (Vivisan's wife), reduced Kumbhkaran who is supposed to be one of the most intelligent and mightiest warriors in Lanka to a giant who was just howling! They should have from the very beginning clarified that they have not adapted Valmiki's Ramayan. They have literally scammed people.

@@saptaparnichanda7046 I also agree with this. There have been and there will be different interpretations of Ramayan. What I have come to understand that in the post pandemic era people have become more intolerant than ever before. There are rumours that Nitesh Tiwari will be directing a movie also based on Ramayan. And Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt will be leads. People are literally questioning this casting on the basis of Ranbir's eating choices! Since when did an actor's personal life matter so much. We should judge a movie on the basis of its storyline, technical aspects and the acting of the actors! If we go about looking for a perfect man (God knows what people commenting like this even mean by 'perfection'), then there won't be many options left. Coz we are all flawed and there is no thing as perfect. Even though some of us are sensible enough to call out those who are bashing a movie for weird reasons, we can't argue with them coz apparently the weirdos are in the majority!

Disagree hard with Rahul when he is saying the problem is "How dare they change ramayan" That is the loudest criticism , but not the most relevant one , that is the current right wing narrative , but the common rational liberal who is still in majority , although not as loud, has a problem that THE MOVIE WAS SHIT for 90 percent of what matters in a movie , dialogue , screenplay , ravan was a very complex character , meghnad was brave , ravan's brothers were not evil , hanuman and angad were benevloent characters out of their hard exterior , none of that is here

Guys just one thing to say - If you have watched Mahabharat made in Star Plus which later came to Disney Hot Star. That is some thing if you watch you can’t or won’t say - that old Mahabharat was better. See the artist selections , see the action .. and see how they have used all the VFX but without distorting it. We all take reference from new Mahabharat. We see the reference of new Krishna. So that is how you do when you are recreating a such an imp epic. So we have an example .. I am sure there budget was not 500 CR.

@komal146 Жыл бұрын
When you live in the age of pseudo science, you get this. This was devoid of any complexity and artistic interpretation. It had singular theme of national/religious superiority running through it like dozen other movies nowadays. And if Ramayana is supposed to be historical fact, they butchered facts and adopted WhatsApp facts about advance Ayodhya. That killed a lot of world building, immersion and anything remotely interesting about our ancient heritage.

Do you really think Sucharita, that the dialogues used in the movie justifies it in the movie and that too lord Hanuman saying. Like " Tere Baap ki Lanka, Tere Baap ke kapre or Tumhare Shesh Naag ko lamba kar diya. Ab pura pitara bhara hai"? These dialogues used in the movie are really justified and should be used in a mythological movie especially in Hindu mythology. And the Raavan depiction in the movie is not what we have read or seen. They have defaced Raavan's look completely. Furthermore, we all know that Lanka was of pure gold. In Valmiki's Ramayan, we know that Lanka was called Sone ke Lanka. Here they have made it Mordor ( Lord of the Rings).

This is Arnab from Filmkopath channel, Rahul might be knowing as he connected with us for a podcast but i wasnt there on that day. Anyways internally we were discussing that while we are happy that a shoddy product had been rejected but the discourse is weird. And it unmasked some of the "liberal" channels and individuals as well and showed they are as similar as the right wings. Yes, I have a problem with the intention of the makers who made a shoddy 600cr product and tried to arrogantly justify it. I have no issues with modernizing Ramayana as that's what many would have wanted to see - or probably not :( Sucharita mentioned Karna and I remember Dhanush Karnan which was a brilliant adaptation of Mahabhrath in the present context telling the story from Karnan's perspective where Krishna is the warmonger. I dont thing we can make that film for the hindi audience as they would have pounced on the makers. The religious sentiments of hindi audience cant be hurt and there's no scope for experimentation. Adipurush had faltered on experimenting with the dialogue but I would call it out for its bad dialogue and not for why god is speaking in that language. I agree with Muntashir that he wanted to write it to make it reachable to new gen, but he need to accept that he had faltered while doing so. Unfortunately Om Raut and Manoj Muntashir still trying to play the religion card to gain sympathy and acknowledgement and it seems the same audience is angry with him for that reason. Perfect example of loha lohe ko katte hai kind - unfortunately true cine-lovers who wants to call out the horrendous film-making are just minorities (To ensure someone doesnt mistake me for a bhakt on twitter I keep on saying I hated the film from its trailer itself because of the shoddy vfx and non-ability of the makers to transport us to that all)

You need to understand Sucharita that, "People have not even seen an authentic Ramayana till now in live action like the 1992 anime". If people had seen an authentic Ramayana, then you can sprinkle some creativity and then try to adapt it different setting, by reimagining certain aspect of it, with different POV. But, if you'll try to do it in the first Adaptation itself, it's will piss many people off. And it not a characteristic of how Indian are so intolerent, it happens all the time specially when some western studio try to adapt an Japanese anime. Just observe how vehemently the fan discard and cancel the film if it changes the character's character in any way which isn't true to the source. So, if it happens to anime, then I suppose it's bound to happens when a epic like Ramayana which some people genuinely feel connect to on a personal level get adapted and then it doesn't strick the right chord with the audiences.

This is not about Adipurush. I am not a film buff, I saw both Haider and Kashmir Files. Kashmir Files was at best an average movie and Haider was a good movie. Having said this, how a movie that shows all the documented events (Girija Tikku, BK Gnajoo, Mr. Kaul, Nandimarg, and Airforce officers killing) as they happened, is called a propaganda movie; and a movie however good it may be (Haider), that whitewashes terrorism and brushes the greatest tragedy of independent India (massacre of pandits) under the carpet is not called a propaganda movie. Or anything that's against personal belief can be termed propaganda?
