What went wrong with my KRK monitors?

Something weird happened to one of my KRK Rokit G2 monitors, so I decided to open it up and take a look. If you have these monitors, you should DEFINITELY do the same, before it's too late...

The main resistors are not 2K ohm they are 2.2K ohm that’s why they look different in your case, great video overall 🤙🏼

Nice one man. I have the krk G1 8's and they are still perfect. I must have got them 15+ years ago second hand. Is that desktop pic taken on top of the Drakensburg?

One of my 6 G2's has a very slight buzz on one of them. It's very subtle but if I play a pure sign wave I can hear it.

This glue is used to suppress acoustic effects, without that monitor would be a little bit louder. This is also used in speaker power supplies. It's popular technique in audio devices.

This was only a problem for the 2nd gen Rokits and possibly the original Rokits. Not sure about anything older. The 3rd and possibly 4th gen ones have no goo on the board.

Fun fact i have gen 3 rookit 8 one speaker is almost inaudible. I have no clue where to get these boom box fixed since there are not many promising electrical repair shops here in India

Hi. I had the same issue with my rokit 5's last year. Black goo all over the boards. I googled it and it seems like it's a known issue but I don't know if krk have done anything about it. I cleaned the goo off the boards as much as I could and it improved the sound for a while but it just slowly got worse. I'd had them about 10 years and I ended up selling them for parts or repair and got some Yamahas

My first instinct was to just upgrade mine as well, had them about the same length of time. I have no idea if they will last or not but probably bought myself a couple more years anyway 🙂

Since a major heatwave the past week, I've been having issues with my rokit 5's sounding tinny. I was praying it wasn't an issue with my monitors and the sound was caused by some other issue. Im not able to do all that technical stuff you've just done 😭

You might want to get them open and try and remove any of the black goo from the board - that might be enough to improve things without doing anything technical

I have the same issues with my KRK Rokit 8s now. As a matter of fact, one of my 8's will not power up. If you do not mind, would you give me the information on where you got your replacement parts, please?

Hey! Sorry to hear you're having the same issues :-( I just bought the replacement components on eBay - the capacitors will have the voltage and µF rating on the side, and for resistors you can use the coloured bands to figure out the resistance value - there are online tools to help decode these

Hmm, not too sure I'm afraid. I think they do have an internal fuse though, so that might be something to check. Otherwise the best thing is just to open it up and look over all the circuit boards and see if you can spot anything

Bought these and instantly regretted it. Their ability to handle so much bass, made it impossible for me to mix properly as then everything sounded thin on other speakers. I had a big mixing project and ended up using my Altec Lansing PC speakers and they were vastly superior. As they say, the most average speakers are the best - hence why Yamaha NS10s are the go to. One of my Rokit’s cacked & I’m sure it’s this issue. Over-priced, over-hyped junk.

Krk are like Beats from DRE,they over punch Bass and are terrible to use as reference studio monitors! This Goo thing,people been calling it the Goo of Death for years ahahahha On JBL´s the Goo is white though :p

I personally tend to mix a lot on headphones, so these really just give some reference when I need to A / B test my mix. But yeah, they are not flat by any means

I have a couple of pairs, but my Sennheiser HD650s are my workhorse pair. They are fantastically detailed, but I find them a little bit light on the bottom end, so I have a tendency to mix a little bass-heavy on them. So it works well to A - B test between them and my KRKs

Hey man got a prob with mine. I repaired mine and since after then it makes hissing sound when the laptop charger is connected but stops when unplugged

Hmm, that's a strange one, I would guess you also have some more faulty capacitors somewhere as these are used to filter the signals and reduce noise. I'm afraid I don't really know much more than that though, I'm definitely not an expert in electronics!

@@TheOrphicCreative You probably have a ground loop between the KRK's and the laptop power supply. It can be solved by using a "ground loop eliminator" in the audio line from the laptop to the KRK. These devices use a transformer to isolate or "break" the loop.
