Even before signing Neymar, Puma had built a reputation of producing top quality football boots, at prices that were significantly lower than the more popular competition from Nike and Adidas. With the Ultra being arguably the most underrated boot on the market for a number of years. More recently however, things have gone downhill. What went wrong?
In today's video we take a closer look at the Puma Ultra Ultimate in the new Rush pack colorway, along with discussing what I believe are the 3 aspects of the Ultra that Puma simply got wrong. It's not that they're terrible football boots by any means, but compared to all of the competition in the "speed" category, I really feel like Puma have missed the mark with this one. This feels like a debate the “change for changes” sake. I wonder if the 1.3/1.4 didn’t sell well? I was interested even now but I’m just not in the market for boots at the moment

Z1.4 lockdown & comfort was much better than next version. They were also true to size & then made them longer so i have to go down 1/2 size now. Also tend to get heel blisters whereas I didn’t with z1.4. Blades too long.

They should bring back the heel construction from the Puma One 1/19.1/20.1. They fit my feet so well.

You should try using the "strong" version of the bow knot. It ties a tighter knot and lays perpendicular to your shoe, like a bow tie, instead of twisting to the middle. Laces stay tied with no double knot and just looks better in my opinion.

I like this current Ultra Ultimate a lot, and would definitely pick it over the Future or the older 1.3/1.4 Ultras. If you have the right foot shape for it, the current ones are very comfy, have a very close fit and a nice sharp feel on the ball. The upper isn’t obnoxiously grippy like the older Ultras and the soleplate is less flimsy.

If I honestly learn one thing about puma from the last 10 years of watching your videos and a few others,I do have to say Puma sometimes tend to be the architect of their own downfall and they don’t seemed to learn from it. Not just in recent years even with the evospeed around the mid 2010s,some of the V lines and even several puma king models. Only puma boots I remember having a very consistent line of great boots from one generation to the next are the evopower 1 to vigor,puma future and Puma one did improved by the second Gen to the last model.

U mention new balances prices didnt increase, but at least here in europe the furon v7+ and tekela v4+ went up by 10€ from the furon v7 and telela v4

i've commented this before but i now have four pairs of 1.3 / 1.4's so they will last me until either puma brings the line around to the better again, or else maybe i can look at new balance...

I own these mostly because I got them for half off and for the price I got them for I can't complain. Decent sole plate pretty responsive upper is pretty plastic feeling, But lockdown was really good especially with the grip insole they have. These hardly ever go for retail and are usually far below especially at my local your local boot shop.

Ultra 1.1~1.4 were their top product… Ultra ultimate was not bad until they changed the upper stiffer and thinner..

To be fair, I always found these on sale in Puma Website for about $90-$100. And at that price point, it's hard not to cope one, considering Adidas and Nike boots rarely drop their price at that high discount. And if i have to choose a discounted Puma Ultra Ultimate vs Nike Mercurial Academy at the same price, I gladly would wear Ultimate all day.

I mean at such a price it’s justified even though the boots are flawed. Paying anywhere between 90-100 bucks for a top end model that sells for $200+ is an absolute steal

All the top company’s went the opposite of what they had going before Covid so much that NB is better than puma 😬

I say at that time brands were very much trying to push the whole knit and textile upper based approach which was more or less becoming the norm. Covid period somewhat saw that return even though I say boots are nowhere near the variety we had in the 2014-2016 era

You really wonder how multimillion/billion dollar companies can get a product so wrong. Especially when they were on the right track before. I mean, did nobody test these boots before putting them on sale? Given how bad the original was, I'm surprised they introduced a new colourway.

They change for the sake of change. They are scared that consumers will stop buying if they keep the same product for years, as they used to (yet, the Adidas Copa Mundial still outsells virtually everything yearly)

Companies have the tendency to make changes that not the consumers ask. They had so much momentum on their side but absolutely threw it away

A totally new design team 2/3 years ago. Little or no experience. Not just talking design team - but also development team - it’s no surprise to me. These Ultras look terrible. Hate to say “I told you so” to Puma
