I was really happy when I discovered how affordable singles for the Mystical Archive were. I bought a ton of foil-etched mystical archive cards for my Kess, Dissident Mage commander deck and they're all so nice to look at. The deck is basically Mystical Archive themed at this point.

And despite most of them being rather cheap they still felt good. That's what I remember most prominently about cracking the packs. Crap rare? Well, at least there is a pretty Regrowth or something like that. Cards that I will actually put into a deck at some point, or give away to someone who wants them for the same reason.

The Mystical Archive literally got me back into Magic this year. I hadn't played in so long (between 2016 and 2020) due to a variety of factors, but seeing all of the cool cards once again made available through the Mystical Archive - with that added Japanese aesthetic - really created such an incentive for me to hop back in. I think this year was a really good one in Magic for many reasons, including what you said Prof, but I'm generally optimistic, so my opinions aren't the most critical lol If I'm being honest, my favorite part of 2021 for Magic was the announcement of 2022's lineup. Between returns to Kamigawa and Dominaria, a crime noir set theme, and the first Un-set I will have been able to participate in (I missed unstable in 2017), I am so excited to draft and play with my friends next year. Great video as always, Prof! I'm glad you found several things to be happy with this year!

I gotta say I really liked the Strixhaven set unto itself. The Mystic Archive was definitely the best part, but I really appreciated how Strixhaven pushed the boundaries of what different color pairs could do and found a really clever way to turn flavor into interesting gameplay with the Learn/Lesson mechanic. I don't know if it ranks with anything from the Prof's list, but the Strixhaven set is probably my fave from this year. (I'd also like to apologize to Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. I still like you - easy number two set for the year - but Strixhaven was just a better Magic set.)

Even though I knew the 'Vintage Masters' bit wasn't real, your presentation and hopefulness transferred to me momentarily and I wanted it just as badly. Also the Alchemy bit was 'Chefs Kiss', and I am STOKED for Kamigawa. The Strixhaven Archive is my favorite thing to happen to Magic in a very, very long time. I personally use them for my "wishboard" at home, as they are a great, curated set of spells in multiple colors that give me a huge selection of tools to deal with just about anything, and given the prevalence of wish effects lately... it makes for great, fun in moments! Also, the cards are fun to fan/shuffle, as all the colors along the top and the sides can line up and make some really cool patterns, etc. The only thing I would change is that I wish the pips at the top of the card should also reflect the rarity of the spell, for example.

Fetchland prices aren't "all time low" until they're single digit. These same lands ranged just north of $10 back when they were Standard legal and I'm a little confused on why we continue to pretend that never happened.

I once traded an Obstinate Baloth for a Scalding Tarn, which was roughly comparable in price at the time. I almost never trade, but there was a guy at the store that really needed that Baloth for his Standard deck. Obviously that turned out to be a pretty good deal on my end as time went on.

@@BobardeZanzibar The original five fetchlands premiered in Onslaught, many many years before the other five came out in Zendikar. They were already a staple in the formats they were legal in. People were already well aware of "how good they were". That's what we're saying; initial prices for desirable rares just weren't the same back then. There was a time when cards would remain relatively affordable for a good six months or more after release, and gradually gain value after that, not spike to the moon the instant they came out.

Honestly, the best part of Mystical Archive was it was the proper way to do showcases. Between extended art and showcases it's become a bit dull, but the Archive felt a lot better when opening a Lightning Bolt rather than an uncommon from the Standard set that won't really do anything.

My best thing was when I heard about the Forgotten Realms set and I put a calendar notice on my phone so I could buy some as soon as it dropped. The box of boosters I got gave me most of the set and I've been acquiring singles so I can complete the collection. Just a handful to go and I'll have one of each! It's been a lot of fun!

Im still very new to MTG, and it is super overwhelming but also a great experience. I used to have a TON of yugioh and pokemon cards, but were since stolen a few years ago. An now that im away from those types of people, i have begun a MTG card collection (barely play, as i cant find time or friends at the moment to play regularly) an am still enjoying watching your videos and having all of these cards i can look through, and try to learn as much as i can about. TCC has helped me 100% in at least basic understanding and trying to learn even more about the different play styles. One thing that may not be well received among MTG players that i enjoy, is getting set booster packs and getting the "art cards" for some reason i thoroughly enjoy them 😊 im loving my collection so far.

I think most welcome and surprising thing to happen to magic this year was Postie's meteoric rise as an MTG personality. If my 2021 bingo card had "Post Malone and The Professor become besties" I would have asked for a new one. In part because the set was strong and so fun to play, but also because I had no context for modern beyond some of your videos until that point. For me it was Kaldheim. Long have I waited to make a fairly decent Dwarf Tribal deck in Modern, and now I could. The artwork for this set was crazy too, I love it so much. Helps that I'm from Norway so Vikings, snow, and axes are my MTG fetish, lol. My oldest deck is after all a Legacy deck built around Lovisa Coldeyes. A lot of the other sets was 'meh' but Kaldheim stands out even if overall it is not beloved by the community. Dungeons and Dragon's I also found neat (I'll take that Bruenor card thank you). I know not many love these crossovers but when I joined MTG we had William Shakespeare quotes, Aladdin, and the Headless Horseman in these now Legacy/ Vintage cards. So we've really had crossovers to some extent for a long-long time as I see it. _I both understand the hate for crossovers and too think people look over this card games older prints. With real world folklore cards, and fairytales. Repentant Vampire is also a big nod towards a certain popular 90's television show ツ

Great video as always. I started playing again right after Strixhaven released so I didn't know the Mystical Archive was anything special until AFR released and it didn't have it. Once I realized what a treat the MA cards were I went through and found so many cards that bumped up my commander decks power. Best pull was Demonic Tutor in foil, if only I got the Japanese foil version!

I only started playing Magic with a friend near the end of 2020, and around the middle of 2021 I picked up the Kaldheim Commander precons for us both after he mentioned trying it out a few times, and I'm hooked! Getting in to commander and all the new decks I've built played and upgraded is definitely my top pick for 2021. I've also loved the card variants released this year, Mystical Archive was the best, but I also loved the showcase frames from Kaldheim, and the black & white showcase arts from Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow.

Mystic Archives were the true successors to the Zendikar Expeditions and Masterpieces. It showcased the beauty and mystical wonder of new art on cards we didn't know we wanted in a standard set. It gave new light to cards like Mizzix's Mastery, while showcasing some of Magic's most iconic cards in beautiful new ways. It was as unafraid to address modern staples like Lightning Bolt and IoK as it was to reference Legacy in Brainstorm, Swords to Plowshares, and Channel, Commander in Crux of Fate and Teferi's Protection, and even standard. It was leaning into Magic's unique hold on fantasy art in a way that had something for everyone. It was cards you could as easily collect and showcase as you could play them, just like the Expeditions. It was the first time in a long time I was really really excited for spoilers.

Man, I haven't been following mtg sets for a while now (play a lot of jumpstart) so you actually got me with that "Vintage Masters" set at the start of the video! I was looking forward to it for a quick moment lol.
