The Complex Sneakers Podcast is co-hosted by Joe La Puma, Brendan Dunne, and Matt Welty. This week, the trio is guestless as they discuss the best sneakers of 2021. In this last episode of the year, the co-hosts explain the rationale behind Complex's choices for the top-ten sneakers of the year and run through the whole list. They also add in a few of their personal favorites that deviate from the list. At the top of the show, Joe and Brendan recall their recent trips and Welty gives a brief update on superintendent duties.

I agree with Welty on the CDG Foamposite 1. It's a dope shoe. I'm glad it exists. Outside of that I don't really care about it and I barely want to see it in real life.

But on the other hand, isn’t there some frustration that they start by complaining that the Cool Grey 11 is a straight retro, and they don’t like to put straight retros on the list. And then the next 2 shoes are the 450 and the CDG, and Welty doesn’t like these either! Love Welty - but c’mon man!

I agree with Welty on the Foams. It is definitely a really cool sneaker, but I don't think the general public would think it was that crazy. Plus with the high retail price and low stock I didn't really see anybody get them or talk about them.

Patta AM1 is my #1 of the year and at least deserves to make a top 10 list (or at least a mention of it existing). Super clean, great rollout, fair drop. This top 10 list is the "top 10 sneakers with potential headlines that could generate a lot of clicks for complex" list. Many worthy ones made it but maybe you should bring in more thought diversity into your judging panel than complex employees. Love the show and energy tho. Cant wait for a new year of the podcast.

The disrespect for sbs this year was insane. Mummys, P-rods, and parras should’ve definitely been on there instead of those foamposites. Those rain cloud 2002rs should’ve also been in the top 5 for sure along with the patta air maxes. They were definitely two of the most sought after pairs of the year and the details and execution were perfect!

Although he never explained it as such, I think Virgil did "The 50" in jest to reference how he was named after $50, so the collection should be called "The Virgil" really. The TS × ⚡ AJ's is more of a sequel to the last Frag AJ1 than a Travis shoe when you look at it, but the reverse lateral Swoosh adds some character. I'm an Air Max man, so I can technically count the AMM AJ3 as a win for the community 😂 But my top 3 of the year are (third) the Air Max 1 Evolution of Icons, which is like a Megazord of Air and a better looking pair than the F&F Master's. Second, the Air Max Plus TigerBerry, just for how sick the fade and colour-blocking is (reminds me of a orange & raspberry sorbet swirled together), definitely one of the best fades in years. First would be the Air Max Tailwind 5/+ Sk 5, for the silhouette retro of the Tailwind 5, the combination of it merged with the Plus, the storytelling of metamorphosis and just the general aesthetics of them 🤌🏾🌊🌊 The Wavy Chrome being my favourite of the two.

The Nike ACG Mountainfly Low not being mentioned once is a crime. Best new ACG model in years. I’ve heard it described as an off road Yeezy 350, and that’s a perfect description. A great low top with Nikes react Vaporfly midsole and a rugged outsole capable of tackling wet urban streets or Rocky Mountain trails

I agree with @JLP on the Yeezy 450. It's never been done before. I feel the same about the NSLTD boot. No other shoe/boot looks like it, but it's weird walking in them. I think with the right fit, puffer jacket/vest and baggy cargos could be 🔥.

Some shoes that I think should have been considered: Nike x Social Status dunks (specifically chocolate milk) Lightning 4s Raging Bull 5s South Beach Lebron 8 Cool gray 11s I realize thats they were massive GRs but to think they finally released “grail” level sneakers. It sad that people are sleeping on them because they don’t resell for much.

Ok I really want to hear someone's thoughts on this but outside of the placement of the hairy suede and the story...with the AMM 3's, don't anyone think that wearing a white cement 3 a bunch, aged a lot, would look better than the AMM3's? Like imagine a yellowed AJ3 WITH the elephant print.

I think the entire whitaker group should be congratulated this year for their executions on each of their releases. I love the fact that I saw actual people get the shoe and not just celebrities. And then actually wearing them was the cheery on top. Not many collaborators can have four releases in a year let alone four great ones that are throughly executed and are beloved by sneaker consumers.
