Cap packs are supposed to be closer to the esc so it detects a power drop usually happens at high speeds when there is a large demand for more power and battery cant keep up.it picks up that power drop. It doesn't really help with speed as much.
@recoilrob324
@recoilrob324 3 жыл бұрын
If the battery is able to deliver what the ESC demands then the capacitor pack won't offer any benefits. But say you have a 30C battery where the ESC can use a 60C? Then the caps will be able to deliver a higher current until they're discharged so the 30C battery can act like the 60C for a bit of time. If your demands involve a lot of brief hits the caps could make a good improvement, but steady state power won't be affected once the caps are discharged and may in fact slightly reduce the power due to their increased resistance. Set up a drag race where the car/truck won't be able to do a back flip and all of the power available can be used....which would mean a small C rating battery. Install the caps and you'll see a much improved punch off the line while the top speed won't be affected because the caps will have been discharged by that time.

I think you are absolutely spot on. I think most of the people seeing differences are the ones using cheaper batteries. But if that really is the case then I would think you would be better off buying lower c batteries to save money and just using a cap bank 🤷‍♀️

Also the cap should be the closest to the esc to work properly (that’s what they teach to me). In my yeti it’s like night and day, so much more punch I can backflip it even weighting a lot.

I can guarantee you that this is incorrect. Capacitors of that size simply lack the capacity to give you notably higher current, the entire point of a cap pack is for smoothing the voltage, aka lowering your ripple during high demand. Also a lot of capacitors used in cap packs are known as ultra-low impedance, specifically to reduce the increased resistance. I have a ridiculously big cap pack simply because I had a bunch of Rubycon ZLH's sitting around, I gain no top speed nor punch from it, it purely cuts my ripple down.

U have to agree with you on this one capacitors in car audio help smoothen out voltage drain from your charging system same with anything else it is to push more power out of the limited amps from the smaller cell battery. So my point to what I'm inputting is that a capacitor is useless unless you have a regenerating source. Now make it solar that would benefit it with a capacitor

Hey Kev, I run a capacitor pack and I can assure you, you will NEVER feel the difference because there is no appreciable difference in performance. Long story short: Capacitor packs are only to smooth the voltage going to your ESC, because under load your batteries are not a constant voltage and will rise and drop when used aggressively. The entire point is purely to keep the ESC happier, it could be the difference between popping an ESC and not popping it.

Kev, the capicitors will help deliver a more consistant voltage for longer. If you were to watch battery voltage during current draw you would see that number fluxuate by millivolts. The caps help store batteries voltage during those voltage spikes and drops giving the esc a more consistant voltage. I think the idea In RC cars is this transfers to a more consistant battery and "eliminates" the battery sag.

Great Vid Kev. Your Xmaxx got some grunt. Capacitors really only benifit Speed run cars, or other RC cars pulling really high current. The Capacitors store energy, when you running at the ragged edge 'top' speed pulling lot of Amp draw, RC Car can cut power or intermittently cut power "Ripple" the Capacitors help Iron Out the ripple & prevent power loss, by giving that extra bit of Current draw when needed. For most applications you Won't notice a difference & majority of 150AMP + ESC's come with built in Capacitors that provide enough for everyday RC bashing. But for extreme bash setups & particularly high Speed run cars/drag cars they are very useful. Might be worth putting one in your 200mph project Kev. Best soldered as Close to ESC as possible 👍

Hey Kev, some info on super capacitor banks - You will want one for your absolute highest speed run cars, but its unnecessary for most offroad applications. Good ESCs already have a few super capacitors anyways. Take a look at the power wire side of your HobbyWing Max-6 ESC. Those 3 big capacitors are the same style found in that bank you have. There are only 3 caps on the Max-6 because thats all that is necessary for off-road racing and bashing. What capacitor banks do is stabilize the voltage to the ESC. Normally the voltage of a LiPo sags under heavy power draw (under acceleration and high demands like speed running). When you plug in a capacitor, the capacitor fills with charge until it reaches the voltage of the battery. Then, when the ESC draws power, because the high power spikes will hit the capacitors first and then the battery recharges them, this stops much of the voltage sag that is normally found. As you saw, in offroad its not a big enough difference to notice, but in 100+ MPH speed run cars that are drawing 100+ Amps under acceleration, those capacitors will stabilize the input voltage and make acceleration much smoother. But in the end, the input voltage is still the same so you wont see much of a difference in top speed. In most cases maybe 1 or 2 MPH on a 100+ MPH speed car. In offroad, you may see a slight nit better power because the voltage isn't sagging under acceleration. Hope this helps Kev, good lock with the 200 MPH car, you will definitely want a capacitor bank in-between the LiPos and their ESCs on that car to stop that voltage ripple/sag I was talking about earlier. I think the Limitless is a stable enough car to handle the speed. The real issue is going to be strong enough electronics to handle that power demand. Look into the Castle Creations XLX2. It is by far the most popular ESC for speed runners for a reason. It maxes out at 8S but can handle REDICULOUS amounts of amperage draw, with some people recording up to 300 amps on board. The KV of those motors is too high for 12-16S anyways and you need to focus more on amperage than voltage at this point if you want to go faster. 2 x XLX2 ESCs and 16S would probably be enough to push the car to 200+ MPH so long as you sort out the other issues.

Thinking about it, the capacitor pack basically feels like its trying to achieve what brushed motor setups have done for ages. with the 3 capacitor in parallel / series bridged. but with brushless setups, no caps 9on the motors. Since the Esc is a whole lot more efficient plus, brushless takes the loss from voltage spikes and drops when the brushes get hot and brittle, eventually breaking apart slowly.. I dont think on a brushless setup the capacitor pack would make any difference noticeable in speeds or response. Possibly like a Fuel Surge Tank used on drag cars, perhaps the capacitor pack works in the same manner... Im curious to see how it would affect an brushless motor setup. VIDEO IDEA PERHAPS Kevin?????? :D

These capacitater banks kick in when there is more power/current demand then the batteries can deliver in extreme situations. When your rig does standing backflips, then it is a clear sign, that you don't need such a bank. I theory such a bank protects the batteries more then it helps with performance. Any ESC has some capacitater build in and if you look at the small ESCs from the Arrma 3S and 4S line, they have some extra capacitater soldered to the battery cables as well. For the general Basher you should get the same performance out of your rig without or you batteries are too week anyway. There is one big advantage having not capacitater bank: fewer connectors that can come apart during hard bashing and this is one of the main causes why the rigs quit driving. And then there is definitely no performance until replugged... 😘

Capacitor packs can be much smaller and give the same voltage and (usually much more) current for a small period of time. The difference in current doesnt matter since the battery can supply the maximum current the esc handles anyway. Therefore the only differences are that the capacitor pack is lighter and is empty faster. In some cases less weight does matter and then the capacitor packs have the advantage.

I use super capacitors, but for a very different reason. I am powering a crawler with two 18650 cells (because its super light weight and i just wanted to try it), and those batteries can only put out 5 amps. So i put some super caps in and it runs full speed for about 10 seconds then gets slower. But with a crawler, im almost never running full speed so it just feels normal. I dont think your xmaxx is battery limited like that, so you shouldnt see any difference. You could run some really tiny 1000mah batteries though and it would run just like 5000mah batteries for a few seconds. I cant see how thats useful, but it might be fun.

I suspect the extra weight of the capacitors probably cancels out the benefits. Cheers Jim

Kev in short the cap pack keeps a more stable voltage which will help out the esc and in alot of cases increase the life span of the esc. They are used for alot of speed run cars and at the hobby shop i work at people use them often.

The capacitor bank helps when you slam on the throttle and do standing backflips because the esc wants current and the capacitors are really good like 10x the lipos at giving that current

In an electrical setup capacitors do make sense for example in FPV racing quads it is taking voltage spikes out meaning we have a way better and solid FPV feed the ESC's high power draw wont effect our video feed. In 4WD cars I see much less reason to have other than saving your ESC for high demand scenarios. The capacitor is like a reserve tank storing electrical capacity and smoothing out voltage spikes from the main power. I am not surprised at all you couldn't feel any difference. Maybe the ESC did. Many high performance ESC's already have several capacitors already installed. I hope my comment helps to put this one to rest.
