Jupiter is by far the largest planet in our solar system. But if you fell into it, would you actually hit... anything? In today's video, we jump in and see. Support me on Patreon: / answerswithjoe

Jupiter is made of 90% hydrogen and 10 percent Helium and other chemicals. Its clouds include layers of ammonia ice, ammonium sulfide, and water vapor, but underneath the cloud layer, things get really weird.
The pressure forces the hydrogen together until it takes on some unique properties, first a supercritical state that is neither gas nor water, and the other a metallic hydrogen state where the flowing hydrogen conducts electricity that ultimately powers its massive magnetic field.
Oh, and it will kill you.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Blanchard Oklahoma, exactly 2 miles from the neighborhood in Bridgecreek that the May 3rd tornado touched down in. I watched this thing, with my own eyes, from touchdown, to damn near Choctaw, almost 50 miles. That was the most intense experience I have ever had. I watched this thing rip entire foundations, plumbing, grass and even watched it rip the asphalt of Highways 9, 62, 37, 76 and I-44 right out of the ground. It looked like someone took a mile wide razor and shaved a path in the ground. I spent the next 24 hours helping with search and rescue. It's the reason I keep a 4wd truck stocked with medical supplies, water, food, 4,000lbs winch, chainsaw, sledgehammer, pry-bar, extra clothes, blankets, and cash, everything that I needed and didn't have that day, ready to go at a moments notice to respond to tornadoes and am 1 of the first on scene in the event of a tornado in the Okc Metro area.

you might have time to make friends with other people that get thrown out, (or jump) share a few beers, like a night out at the pub, just while continually falling. I often become a baked potato that can't walk on solid ground at the end of pub nights, so... nothing new for me.

Dean Welch and Tye Ten: You are both wrong, an inscription on the metal core clearly states "I made China" not "Made in China". Another states "I made the continent of Africa" and yet another inscription states "I made America and the Pacific Ocean". There is even an inscription stating "I made your moon". And if Trump wants to tariff the core of Jupiter there is even an inscription for that which reads "come get some you orange prune" You can not get any more hard metal than the core of Jupiter.

Well if your friend pushes you out of the spaceship while you're near the Jupiter, you'll likely continue flying in the general direction of the ship, just a little bit away from it. Because if you're near Jupiter in a spaceship you're flying at about 20 km/s at least and there's no chance your friend will push you hard enough to clear that. So you will stay in orbit. If you by chance enter the atmosphere anywhere near that speed, the wind speeds on Jupiter are inconsequential, they're order of magnitude slower. And you will evaporate thanks to friction of the atmosphere long before you reach top of clouds. Also regarding that crushing into potato, water is near incompressible even on Jupiter. So if you somehow stop your orbital speed and slow down your descent so you don't get evaporated by reentry effects, you'll end up as a pretty large potato. First only gas-filled cavities of your body will collapse, such as chest. Later of course your body will get boiled by the heat and the water makind 70% of your body will eventually escape, leaving a 30% worth of crisp. Still pretty large potato.
@CarFreeSegnitz
@CarFreeSegnitz 7 жыл бұрын
kasuha Perhaps your friends park their ship above Jupiter before evicting you. Your friends had better hope they have a powerfull rocket because to survive this stunt they need to pull away from Jupiter with a 2.5G surface gravity. They'll need to achieve 59.5 km/s pretty quickly or suffer a similar fate as you. Our current rockets just barely manage 7 km/s before they run out of fuel.

@clarewulf2054
@clarewulf2054 5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that as you’re falling, you’ll reach terminal velocity (which will change as pressure increases, and lessen, but also there will be more gravity, but that effect will be less than the pressure increase), so you’ll know which way is down, because you’ll be decelerating.

You're right, but he's just talking theoretical, imagine if they'd float above the planet, with insane thrusters and insane amounts of delta v, then pushing you out. Or maybe more like a platform which goes beyond the atmosphere, even though that's again a very impractical example.
@squirlmy
@squirlmy 5 жыл бұрын
@@CarFreeSegnitz If your friends are able to get a manned spaceship to Jupiter, they'd probably have the tech to go 60 km/s, anyways. And, I'm confused if you mean currently 7km/s in Earth's atmosphere, or in extra-orbital space? Big difference. And anyways, maybe they all jump after you in a bizarre group suicide? (since, you know, they're "friends")

The week after the tornado tore through Moore there was a massive influx of students who transferred to my school. I just watched the vacuum decay video, and this is far more troubling to me for some reason. Maybe because vacuum decay would just happen without warning and be done faster than can be perceived? While this is tangible, something that can be imagined. Like sitting at the bottom of a swimming pool, but heavier, and hot. And violently chaotic and pitch black and oh so very terrifying. It's like sensory deprivation, but without any actual deprivation except for vision and all of the searing pain. Oh, and don't forget the fact that you would be hallucinating wildly for most of the process. The brain does that in weird sensory situations sometimes.

Most systems in the galaxy have binary star system. Our solar system only enough mass for one star. Jupiter is just the unborn remains of a child that could have been. Worked out great for us, because a binary star system would have made it impossible for us to live and Jupiter acts as a body guard to attract all the large debris. Our configuration of our solar system and the remoteness of it allowed early life to have a chance to survive.

In no sense is Jupiter a "failed star". Not even close. Jupiter would need at least 80 times more than its current mass to fuse hydrogen and become a G dwarf star, like our sun.
@treymiller5736
@treymiller5736 6 жыл бұрын
Trev0r98 doesn’t stop ppl from calling it that bc it’s the same make up of a star. And our 80 Jupiter’s isn’t classed as a g dwarf it’s to small for that lol need to be roughly 250x bigger then Jupiter is

If it had 80 times it's mass then it would be a successful star. How close to success do you have to be to be a failure?

Christopher Perisho failed star implies it is “attempting” to be a star. By your logic then you yourself are a failed stat
@squirlmy
@squirlmy 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidnotonstinnett yeah, but him, and the entire Earth, are a much bigger failure at being a star than Jupiter is. Jupiter had a much better chance than us. :-(

I know this short answer video is not the right occasion, but I would really enjoy longer. more detailed videos. like 30-45 mins. because you have so much interesting stuff to say, and I am sure your research is detailed enough for much more information.

While you're not incorrect Jupiter is an interesting case, as is our sun. Jupiter is unique among gas giants for its density and composition with its helium and hydrogen content being optimal for the formation of a star. With more than half of the star systems we know of being binary or larger, our sun being a loner makes it pretty unique as well. A lot of astronomers have theorized that if our solar system was binary jupiter would have been the best option. But our star grabbed most of the mass rapidly in the early days of our solar system, while mass is distributed more equally in other systems.

That's why some scientists concern when Galileo planned to crashed into Jupiter because it had Radiosiotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) which they thought that the nuclear fuels would get supercritical and become an atomic bomb... but it did not
@alphaadhito

So it depends on how much material has fallen into Jupiter so far vs. Its size vs. Sheer location on Jupiter itself, but about the layer the "potato" would stop... would it feel solid all around like ground on Earth? Mushy like talcum powder on the bottom of ocean/quicksand/avalanche? or completely "gaseous" beneath like... rocks floating in... gas?!?!?
