Suggestion: Go COMPOST toilet! It is not hard to do - does not smell if you do it right. Read all about it, use animal cedar bedding chips, or the Coco moss, or even kitty litter (but if you want biodegradable, I don't really condone using that). For washing dishes etc. spray with vinegar water, then wipe off excess food etc with a paper towel (you will need rolls of towels for this way, but saves Lots of water) Then spray again with vinegar water, and wipe clean and dry with a cloth dish towel. Doing just these 2 things do not use much water and are easy to maintain. Traveling mercies to you - good luck and God bless!

I'd love to watch you build a van! I'm sure it would be a unique build. Cool B&W on this video...something about B&W...so classy. Get a composting toilet and you won't have to worry about flushing and black tanks...perhaps you could then remove the black tank and replace it with an additional fresh water storage tank? Anyway, I have a takeaway from another video I watched recently...solar up top is all well and good, but make sure you have some additional solar panels on 50 foot cables. Parking the van in the shade is good for your comfort, but does nothing for the panels on the roof. So, park in the shade and move a couple panels out in the sun...adjust the angles and direction of the panels a couple times a day for maximum efficiency.

There are a lot of van dweller videos out there but I must say that yours stands out. You're editing and your personality put together, what can I say, are fun and unique just like you. I'd be very interested if following your winter project. We converted a conversion van a while back. Just like you we are doing the odd trips here and there. There are 2 thinks that I'm glad we did on it; a swiveling counter top and a partially retractable board that easily convert the bed into a coach. Actually there are 3 things, the mosquitos screen works very well too. Pictures are better than words. I'll put a link up of the steps we took to convert "Precious". I lied again, I'll put 2 links. Short version has 26 photos and comments and the long version with over 100 photos (tediously detailed) and comments. So let's see if it works. I just noticed, probably everyone else knows that already but after I clicked on the photo I had to click on the white round icon with the letter 'i' in it to access the comments. 26 Photos goo.gl/photos/unBbXyZBRkZ6S43v9 and the 140 photos version. goo.gl/photos/hqguR9cNU2SVnm5V7 Again it would be so cool following you converting a van. Take care Nicole

Why not use a second high output alternator on the engine to provide lots of amps at 12 volts to charge batteries and run all appliances,including a 12v AC unit. Running the engine while parked won't hurt it. It's quite,clean and efficient. No worries of cloudy days or snow covering solar panels. No generator required. Install 4 or 6 AMG batteries along with the appropriate control system. Saves big bucks over lithium and less weight. The high output alternator will charge the batteries at lightning speed as compared to an array of solar panels. Also, I think you may already do this however, if not, install a marine electric hot water heater that offers a heat exchanger built in to it and also connect it in series with a heater hose off the engine. Both of these suggestions will take advantage of the engine when cruising and at idle when needed. Plenty of electrical power and hot water by just driving down the road. I believe the Coachman Galleria class B offers this set up. At least they did a couple of years ago. This is used a lot in European builds. What am I missing as it seems to make good sense and is economical? Love your channel. Where are you located?

I think that would be a great idea! You should also insulate it! There are so many ideas out there but not sure which one is the best way to spend my money! You get through all the..."This way is better", no "That way is better" type of videos that are out there! And, then your head just spins! You seem like a very thorough person who does his research and takes it slowly, one step at a time. You also give slow and detailed directions, and for some of us we need that! Hahaha! You go for it! I'm totally here for you with that project!

Okay, we're hooked. My wife and I are thoroughly enjoying your professionally shot series. We've watched them all. We own a 2009 Leisure Travel with the same layout as your van. The first day I had it I stripped all of the decals and logos off of it. I surprised my wife a month ago when I came home from "The Depot" with all of the stuff for the cab overhead shelf. I literally watched your video in the store as my shopping list. I came home and two hours later I had a shelf. I put pipe insulator on the aft of the shelf. We love it. Thank you VERY much. Last week I installed your rear window lace cafe' rod/curtain assembly (BTW - we found the exact same curtains accidentally, and yeah, they happen to be the best). We love it. I also installed a headboard over the back sofa that has a removable middle section for sleeping and allowing the projector screen to fully extract. It also doubles to keep our cat out of the storage area. Keep the videos coming. Thank you for all of your hard work. "Think Inside the Box" is amazing. Thanks again! Happy travels!
@HumbleRoad7 жыл бұрын
Dave, you have no idea how this makes me feel! I am so happy that you and your wife could relate and be inspired by these videos of mine! I personally have a ton of stuff stored on my overhead cab shelf and every time I look at it I shake my head and say "Oh Good Lord! that was such a simple idea!" And just wait for that morning sun to come streaming through those lace curtains and cast such a beautiful shadow across the inside of your van. It is a very special treat. Thank you for your kind words and support, I intend on keeping you interested.

And could you in some way tell me about this projector and screen you speak of? I will be incorporating such a feature in my upcoming van build. You beat me to the punch, you rascal!
@daveparis3397 жыл бұрын
Thank so much. The happiness is all ours. You are quite the entertainer and we really enjoy your story telling. Super engaging! You are very talented!! Yes, absolutely, I am very happy to share about the projector, and other stuff too, like my Kodiak Lithium Ion battery packs, my solar panels, my induction cook tops, etc.. We are trying to avoid use of the generator and propane stove as much as possible. As far as the Projector, it's an Optoma Pico. Mine is the size of a deck of cards. You need to find one that puts out enough lumins. The projector mount is "V LED Warehouse Universal Extendable Video Projector Ceiling/Wall Mount Bracket with Adjustable Height" available on Amazon. I found a way to mount the flat thin metal base using available vent screw holes in ceiling. That portion stays installed at all times. The pole portion is a "put it up when you use it and take it down when you're done" affair for me at this time. The base stays attached to the ceiling and then I just screw in the post and projector to use. It takes 5 minutes to set up each time you use it, but it's worth it. You could improve upon this by having a newer Pico projector permanently mounted to the ceiling. If you do this, you'll need to get a projector that has keystone adjustment or one that automatically adjusts the image for squareness on the screen, since your projector will be at ceiling height. The screen at back is a simple black framed manual pull down Da-Lite with off-white screen for a 50" diagonal image. We really enjoy watching movies on it. BTW -- I took out the original television and mount within the first week of owning the van because I like that space to sit (and heck, it's also weight reduction to get rid of it). Not sure how to contact you directly, but happy to share additional learnings we've had. Take care!

My plan is to buy a lightly used Sprinter 3500 with windows. From there I want to do my own version of the $175,000 Airstream Interstate. Same quality finish. On the driver side, a table and 2 seat behind the driver, like the Winnebago Travato. Next a tall 12 volt fridge with convection microwave on top. I know you don’t use microwave. Then a 6’´wide x 4’ tall pull out pantry. Next the bathroom with shower. Casette toilet with opening outside. No black tank. In the back, a permanent bed. On the passenger, the kitchen counter with a big sink like you, induction cooktop, one pull out cabinet with the trash can and the paper towel. No propane, solar power, Espar diesel heather and water heather, Coleman Mark 10 a/c. I want a tv on the back of the kitchen cabinet that you can see from sitting outside when the sliding door is open. TV antenna, two fantastic fans etc etc

I was going to buy a used B-class RV - use it - then figure out what I really wanted!! What I ended up doing was buy a new 250 Transit van (mid roof, mid hight). I threw it together to a point where it is liveable and design from there. I think for me it is the way to go. So what ever you end up doing your input is of value. The larger sink suggestion is "gold". Can't wait to see which one you get and I will probably do the same. THX

Smart move. Best way (for me) to understand what works and what doesn't, is to get out there and live with it! I'm searching sinks on Amazon right now!
@TerryManitoba7 жыл бұрын
I just made and executive decision and hoped it would work. Living in it is the best way. I figure it will be a good year till the van is 95% done. To be a realist the last 5% may never get done!! BTW how wide is the counter were the sink is (20-24" wide?) And do you want a sink that fill in most of that width?
@TerryManitoba7 жыл бұрын
Found a 15*17 sink on Amazon - you figure would this be to big?www.amazon.com/dp/B01AFSJ8I6/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I25A068KXQRKWS&colid=T9HCDXX61NB4

Funny you would post this now. After an exhaustive search, I just ordered a sink last night! I did some careful measuring and this baby is about as big as you could go with the cabinet box in a 2011 TS. I did not want to start cutting the cabinets and as it turns out, I can just enlarge the existing sink hole in the countertop and drop this in from the top (even though it is an undercount style). Keep it as simple as possible! www.faucetdirect.com/elkay-ectru12179-13-1-2-undermount-single-basin-18-gauge-stainless-steel-kitchen-sink-with-sound-guard-and-lifetime-warranty/p2302476?CAWELAID=120135430001928382&source=gg_!c959162366!a51705855350!k!m!p1o5!dc!ng!f&cvosrc=ppc.google.&cvo_cid=959162366&cvo_crid=227818574137&matchtype=&cvo_adgroup=51705855350&gclid=CjwKCAjw4KvPBRBeEiwAIqCB-SaMPt5ncPa-KKsGAX1ajDH1k1OEgTbOirx04DYobfWUZdChJN5mXRoC7oQQAvD_BwE

One idea for extra water storage would be 7 Gallon Aqua-Tainer jugs. They cost about $19.95 at BassPro or $17.60 if you go the EBay route or for a little more you can find them at Walmart. They are square and can be stacked. They come with a screw cap AND a hidden spigot! You could stack a couple in your wet bath and maybe move them to dead storage drivers seat while camping. Also, would love to see a new van build out. What year is your current RV? Did you buy it new?

I'd love to see the Sprinter build. A couple of questions for you: Why use a 3500 dually instead of a "regular" 2500 or 1500 and will it be a diesel engine or gasoline? Oh, another question, what do you think about the ProMaster van for someone that doesn't need to pull a trailer?
@HumbleRoad7 жыл бұрын
I'm the kind of guy who wears suspenders AND a belt. I go over board on everything I do. I like the extra strength that comes with the 3500. I do understand there is a cost for that, though. I am actually calculating to see if the Sprinter 2500 would be sufficient for my van build. All the Sprinters are diesel. The reason I stick with Sprinter is because I see Fed Ex driving each of theirs over a half a million miles! When they switch, I'll switch ! ;-) Thanks for watching!

Go for the big build, George. I'm right there as a new sub. I'm looking for fresh ideas for my own future build.

You might was to look at a larger ram promaster 3500, it would be so much cheaper than sprinter, and if you want help I'm from NJ

I'll definitely take a look at the big Promaster. I think it's just a tad wider than the Sprinter, which would be perfect for me. Then I could sleep East/West. That's a better use of space than North/South. I keep my eye on Fed Ex. They drive hundreds upon hundreds of Sprinter vans world wide for over a half a million miles each. That's very telling.

I really like the music you use in your videos. It suits you and also set the mood. Plus, it takes me back in time and soothes me. :)

Hi great stuff really enjoy your ‘grumpy’ humour, your artistry and composition plus congrats on making the change. We just today picked up our increasingly modified ‘pod’ from one of the canvas people here in town. We also had a insect screen put together using existing fittings to fully cover the back opening it also uses Velcro...totally understand your Velcro journey...we had it made heavy duty mesh mainly the canvas people idea. Using canvas makers isn’t cheap but we didn’t have the equipment to make stuff on that gauge or scale so looking forward to your winter screen project plus sounds to have a security element...this is great. If anyone does use professionals find one who is excited about your project, they ask questions, they sketch up and take measurements from the get go. They listen and seem interested in what you want. If they don’t do that go somewhere else your project will be a one off so you need someone who is interested in the creative side of their profession not the ones interested in commercial projects working to a template. It worth shopping around for creativity plus the experience. Because you are the who knows how you want your camp to work. Look forward to more of your journey.

Thank you for watching, Stephane. I agree with you, certain vendors are more suited to you needs than others. Neither is wrong, just focused on different paths. I do look for quality and passion, as you said.

Humble Road hi there just an update on the mesh...totally love it! we were worried that because it wasn’t a tent style mesh which have a gauge that in Australia is midge proof or colloquially known as midgie mesh. So after stuffing around with it over these last couple of days and the mosquito population is building over here, it works we love it and my partner believes it is a tighter mesh than the one they first showed us, she would know she’s a bit like that, so they stepped up went the extra mile, they said they would look into it and obviously did, the guy who put it together actually thanked us as he totally enjoyed doing something different from the template builds he normally did. So the conclusion here is we feel that the heavy duty mesh type will take the on and off the screen will have to do with our style of camper, the dog crashing into it trying to chase down a roo, if you crash into busting for the toilet in the middle of the night, kids in general, or just general wear and tear. We originally thought to edge it with canvas to take the wear and tear at the edges and hold the tension better but it appears the heavier duty mesh takes care of that, canvas is more expensive so we feel they did us a favour! Look forward to more!
