Finland and Sweden are said to be considering a joint bid to join Nato despite fears of retaliation from Russia.
Stockholm and Helsinki have long pursued policies of military neutrality to avoid conflict with regional powers.
But, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said "everything had changed" when Russia attacked Ukraine and told reporters that Helsinki must to be "prepared for all kinds of actions from Russia".
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stressed that Moscow would have to "rebalance the situation" with its own measures if the Nato bid went ahead.
Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has said it would be "useful" for Sweden and Finland to launch joint Nato membership bids, but added that no fixed date had been set for any potential application.
The BBC's Ros Atkins explains the latest developments.

As a Swede i have never been a huge supporter of Military Alliances but it might just be the right time considering current situation. About 60 percent of the Swedish people think that Sweden should join NATO if Finland joins.

And I welcome Sweden and Finland to NATO but also believe, better late than never, that at some point Ukraine should be able to join too, it’s a bit late for Ukraine now but it this war does come to an end like 8years ago Putin will try again, hopefully Ukraine will have been able to join……. It’s precisely the opposite of what Putin wants😉

The immediate Swedish effect is that an aggressor's "threshold" effect is raised considerably. Not only what Peter Hultqvist usually used to say; "it's crucial to send a message" -- this is the real thing, and not talk. Just consider how the Baltic states would be without air policing and some NATO bases in these countries. They would have been scared about what could happen next?

Fun Fact: In Finland there's been three times more applications for gun licences in the last two months and private gun shops are running out of ammunition because the demand has been so huge. Also voluntary military courses have seen multiple times more people. I also received my first call to a compulsory military training after my mandatory military service..these calls have been happening a lot lately. That's what's happening in this peace loving country right now.

How's your national level rifle competitions going? More importantly, about how are your deer and elk hunters doing. I recall the last time this shit happened they had something important to do, something something White Death, hundreds of kills with an Mousin-Nagiant and a SMG. I'm certain nothing similar is going to happen, it's not like countries with large, enthusiastic hunting communities mass produce expert riflemen, and it's not like the Russians have a habit of stupidly invading even colder places without proper equipment, right?

We, Finns, are a peace loving democracy and we'd obviously never want to fight anyone. That said, we're very proud of our country and would never let anyone take it from us without a furious fight with our extremely capable army, extremely capable for a smallish country at least. We've unfortunately had to fight our neighbor in the past, long time ago. We've lived in peace for generations, but now we've again lost all trust in Russia and I would be amazed if we didn't join Nato together with our Swedish brothers and sisters. Madman next door will be disappointed, but he knows who to blame if he has a mirror in his office. Slava Ukraini, I hope this madness stops SOON.

You call a "madman" to someone (Russia) that wants to defend his own house (Motherland) from a Nazi neighbor (Ukraine) that started killing its own family (citizens of Lugansk and Donetsk) during eight years, only because these family members ( Lugansk and Donetsk) don't want to follow their way of living (2014 coup). Yeah, it seems that your sense of loving democracy fits only if the narrative that comes from your wealthy friends (UE and US) and no as real principles of life that should apply to everybody. This crazy neighbor (Ukraine) and his hooligans friends (NATO) represent a threat for somebody else house (Russia) and it seems the Finland wants to become another hooligan and join the gang (NATO). Think what NATO has done through history, NATO has never brought peace anywhere in the world since its formation, on the contrary only chaos, death and destruction, the OTAN is the hand with the stick of the US. Good luck to the people of Finland hanging out with the wrong crowd.

It needs garrisons to protect its Pacific borders, it has soldiers already stationed in Georgian occupied areas and keeps a 200,000 man garrison in Kaliningrad to deter NATO attack. It has 40,000 soldiers in Chechnya to keep it pacified. These are just a few examples. Russia can't pull troops out of any of these areas without risking their security.

@@lostintheinternet2814 with a crippling sanctions that force oligarchs to spend billions to just keep rubble afloat and constantly losing armored vehicles, tanks and infantry and losing the northern front. Don't tell me you believe Russian BS that. That is their plan all along. Because if they are winning they would have taken Kyiv already also they wouldn't send 64 kilometers armored vehicles and tanks to just Sacrifice. It's highly likely that they underestimated Ukraine. With retreating safely is not an option either because Russia used a direct assault which is a strategy that requires a quick win. To capture their objective faster. The only down side is that their flanks and behind would be exposed if they got pinned down. Now that they retreated they suffer more casualties in both infantry tanks, and armored vehicles. It way too costly to consider that that is plan all along. Also fun fact many Russian people left Russia so that they couldn't be conscripted and to avoid sanctions. Which make a impact to Russian economy. Also running a military campaign is way too costly to operate now It's just a matter of time which gave up first either Ukraine or Russia. With this Russia wouldn't dare to start another war because if they did it would require them another percentage of their military force also they would be way too vulnerable if they did that so it's highly unlikely that they would start another war this is not arrogance this is being realistic

Russia has bullied its neighbors allways, we have war 1700-1721 against Russia that is called ''long hatred'', when Sweden and Russia fought in Finland territory (back then part of Sweden), Russia won and after that stole everything they could from us, raped most women they saw, and killed people at will. They came over and over again to our lands later in 1700 and 1800, and did the same. Russia is, and has been constant threat to its neighbors allways, and allways will be. And im not being russophobic, this has just been my countrys reality for 300 years, and sadly Ukraine war confirms, that its still a reality.

Russia's assertion, which is at best a weak one, is that NATO isn't a defensive alliance, but an offensive one. Of course, the obvious question to Russia is, if you're afraid of Ukraine joining NATO, why weren't you afraid when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined? More importantly, Ukraine VOLUNTARILY gave up their nuclear weapons after the fall of the Soviet Union. If they had plans of attacking, wouldn't it have been then? Putin has dreams of "getting the band back together". That's all this is. No one would attack Russia, not even the US. Why would anyone? What would be the point? Putin is just trying to justify the devilish acts he's committing.

"destroying an another country" is a bit extreme, they are destroying themselves against something that is not incompetent or stupid, russia's forces are terribly equipped, barely know which way to hold the barrel of the gun, they are drunk on the battlefield, not coordinated, weak invidually and in masses, their military hardware is mostly soviet era junk which can barely scratch any recent armor, their armata "supertanks" are inferior to finland's leopard 2A6's, and russia has like 11 modern tanks, a single leopard can easily take out russian tanks, primary problem will actually be running out of ammunition rather than russians actually posing a danger, their navy does not even exist anynore, it's a few rotten sovet battleships, they don't even possess the money to keep their old junk moving, they keep killing their own people, their leader is a dickless old man trying to prove an useless point, only country russia is ending is itself, were a nuclear war to break out, russia would still not be much of a threat, like 90% of their nukes aren't even cabable of reaching finland, let alone even functional lol, but then again can you blame idiots for being idiots

Whole basic purpose of NATO members other than USA is to be a meat shield for USA at the time when their leaders finally decide, that they can preemptively massively strike or nuke Russia without serious consequences for mainland USA. If that dismal role is what people of great nations like Sweden and Finland think they deserve - it's very regrettable. Vladof Putler is the best recruiter imaginable for NATO. Finland has a potent, mobile land army with huge artillery core designed and honed for one thing over the decades: to stop the Russian advance form the east on the few roads that snake through dense forests and thousands of lakes. The terrain is an order of magnitude more difficult for an armored advance than Ukraine. Combine this to very capable modern air forces of both countries that are designed to be able to operate from dispersed roads in wartime instead being all concentrated in large air bases, Russia would bleed themselves dry just like they are doing in Ukraine. So thanks Putler for Making NATO Greater Again!

Another thing to bear in mind is that while Sweden has a standing army, it also has Hemvärnet (the Home Guard). It currently has around 22,000 active members, which means they have rifles and a limited supply of war-time ammunition in their homes, but here's the thing: We had one year of mandatory military service for *decades* right up until 2012. So while the Home Guard is fairly limited in size, there are thousands upon thousands upon thousands more trained by the military to fight, and to fight smart. Additionally, there's SAAB and Bofors Dynamics. A bewildering array of the missiles, artillery shells and their systems used not only in Sweden but abroad, such as the venerable AT-4, hail largely from my home town. (Development-wise, nations such as US build their own AT-4s under license rather than importing them across the Atlantic.) Finland for its part has an intrinsic part of its national character, sisu, that cannot be taken lightly. Finns simply do not give up, you'd think that Russia would have learned that during the Winter War. A Finn looks at a pissed-off bear, thinks "I can take him.", and usually the Finn's right. Of course I dearly hope that Ukraine wins a favourable peace and that war doesn't come to my home. But if Russia intends to end our over 200-year long peace, then Russia will pay, and pay dearly, NATO membership or no.

If you (Kremlen) think that NATO "moving to the east" is expansion, then you are looking at it from an imperialist's point of view. Which means you would also be guilty of expanding to the west as an act of imperialism. (Let's not have double standards here.) The fact is that NATO never conquers any one or bullies anyone into joining Nato. NATO does not request countries to join. Rather, nations APPLY and ASK to join NATO. Not the other way around. Each nation has the right to to request to join for their own sovereign security if they meet NATO's requirements of membership. I think too many in Asia and some Communist countries elsewhere might be totally ignorant of NATO'S rules and regulations as a defensive pact alliance.
