Terra forming, at some level, seems to me to be an expansion of the drive to procreate, made possible by technology, demonstrated by the phenomenon of life in all its forms.

Check out Isaac Arthurs channel. Very detailed plans on how to terrafrom venus along with the other planets.

This :) After binging SFIA in recent months, I was listening to this video thinking "that doesn't sound so hard!" ... compared to building ring worlds, Dyson swarms, interstellar space ships, and things powered by tiny black holes, anyway 😸 (just a few concepts that first came to mind, out of the hundreds he's covered!) Also didn't Kurzgesagt make a video about terraforming Venus which _did_ include (eventually) getting a breathable atmosphere? I might be mistaken, and they may not have gone into much detail, but they're generally pretty good at citing their sources :)
@yardsale092 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewGillard I believe so on the Venus one. Also, the boardgame RPG Eclipse Phase has a setting where venus has been paraterraformed in a similar manner, breathable atmosphere but still sky cities/ aerostrats.

Guess we better take care of earth! Just curious what it would take for terraforming mercury?
@rais19532 жыл бұрын
Mercury has craters at the poles where the Sun never shines in so there is water ice. Put a dome over one of those craters and you could start a habitat. Anything further would be hard because of very slow rotation and proximity to the Sun.

I think true terraforming in the traditional way is mostly wasteful. Paraterraforming (basically doming over worlds gradually) and space habitats if done right make a lot more sense, especially considering differences in gravity, etc. Slightly altering makes sense, but the rest can be done in less energy intensive ways, take far less time, and wastes possible other resources

Actually I thing terraforming Mars would be pretty straight forward and quite the achievable mission. The only thing we would need is a utopian earth where all of the population worked together to achieve it. That in my mind is what makes it impossible right now, not our technology but our inability to work together as a unified species on a singular goal.

You know, there's this game called "the planet crafter" which explores this concept. Not 100% scientificly accurate, but if you want to terraform a planet in just a few days this is the game to play :p
@12jalbrandao2 жыл бұрын
If you can make a CO2 moon, you can push several smaller ones to mars. If you have enough time, you can push a huge one and maybe jump start martian mantle. It's nucleus should still be moving. It's the mantle that is probably solidified. Trust me, I'm an engineer, and Dani told me all about it.

I don’t see the point in finding another world if the earth becomes uninhabitable. If we barely have the technology to terraform Venus or Mars. The best thing we can do right now is limit global temperatures and build something to protect our planet from asteroids

I will add another problem. Floating habitats/cities on venus and ice cave habitats/cities on mars would be treatend by tera forming. But these are already outlandish ideas so maybe it wont be a problem (yet).

Oh, you mean we can just flip a 3 fingered switch on Mars and wait 5 min...? That sucks... (Total Recall)

This always makes me motivated to utilize the science we have gained and using it for Improving OUR PLANET! Like sure it's fun to talk about Mars, but can we focus on our home first?? PLEASE and Mars is so boring but apparently a bunch of people are really interested in it but literally every other location in the solar system is more interesting for science and learning about new things or more geologically diverse, more complexity higher chances of extremophiles existing on like titan or Enceladus under the ice in the sub surface liquid oceans. Etc. There's even more chance of Venus having proof of bacteria or something else than Mars does. Sorry. Mars is my least favorite location in our solar system. I'd love to see us invest time and money studying other places and I'm just venting that here. My bad. (BTW have you seen how even Pluto is surprisingly fascinatingly complex and diverse geologically, seemingly geologically active too... What a beautiful surprise)

@gekkobear16502 жыл бұрын
A simple calculation shows that the global population is growing at a rate of doubling every 61 years. Assuming Earth is full (it certainly won't bear another population doubling), Mars, if we had instant access to the whole planet fully terraformed, would fill up in probably less than 61 years. Then after another 61 years we'd fill 2 more planets the size of Earth. In just 1600 years we'd fill 1,000,000,000 planets. We obviously don't have instant access to 1 billion habitable planets, nor any hypothetical equivalent. Even if you think colonizing other worlds is possible and a good idea, we HAVE to slow down. The growth economy must be supplanted by a slow and steady degrowth, local/regional economy. If not, it will be replaced by a rapidly collapsing global economy leaving billions to starve. There's no quick terrarforming fix to any of this
@willofone21202 жыл бұрын
Well I do think we should colonize other worlds, I feel like our resources would be best spent creating interstellar habitats. It's significantly more difficult to take infrastructure up then down and having the processing in space would be effective for seeding other worlds. We're only going to explore other solar systems, with our current technology at least, with generational ships.
