Doing recce means most of your time on your belly and looking through optics, especially if on a CTR or manning a COP. I don't know how you guys manage this with chest rigs/front mounted pouches. Back when I was doing this kind of thing, it was belt kit all the way. You can stay prone forever and can move around without dragging pouches on the ground while still having full access to your mags. Ammo was typically 8 mags and a bandolier. We would have a belt fed weapon (LMG or GPMG) and a 40mm on all COPs and recce tasks as we were a small team (typically a 6 man patrol) and so had to be able to fight our way out of a scrap if we were bumped. The main aim if compromised was to get a shit ton of rounds and smoke down quickly and bug out to the ERV as fast as possible, not hang around and duke it out.

Most enthusiasts will fall out at the base of the hills/mountain with half this gear. You have to be conditioned for it. Starting from a baseline of 2 years already in the Infantry before going to Recon Selection & Assessment, then spending a year in Recon before going to Sniper Section, you were in top physical condition for running fast and long, as well as humping a mission ruck, and doing IADs with and without rucks. It isn't an overnight process of getting fit enough to hump this equipment. It took me years before I got into Recon, and then I was starting over again as a cherry Scout Observer. Had to work hard and be competent to earn the Radio, but we all had to be very proficient on Radios as part of the job. Radios, extra batteries, broken down MREs, water, hide site kit, optics, tripod, yeti net, wet weather gear, hide site shovel, fold-out saw, and extra socks was 85lb easy just for a summer ruck, no fart sack. Winter rucks can get really nasty.

Surprised with the amount of spray painting you guys use. The scent it gives off is really strong if the people you’re spying on are using dogs you’re gonna be picked out pretty fast. I don't remember the chiggers being that bad at Bragg, but ticks were. I honestly preferred Panama over AP Hill when it came to bugs. Scandinavia and Estonia have crazy mosquitoes though. Made Panama seem like a picnic. The ants in Panama scared me the most. Do the rucksack flop on the jungle floor, 15 min later there's a no-BS trail eaten out of the leaves and clovers that wasn't there when you sat down. Bats too, and howler monkeys. 25ft python and alligators. I bounced a coconut off an alligator's head as it popped its eyes up out of the water. It minced like a kid being bullied.

I've never been in the military but my gut instinct would be to carry as much ammo as I could while also carrying all the other shit you have to carry in combat. Why the hell would you knowingly go into harms way with only 120 rounds? That just seems foolish. While it may be unlikely--look at some of the famous battles of the last few decades where our most elite forces found themselves ambushed or outnumbered. Somalia '93, Tongo Tongo, Cop Keating in '09, Najaf, Benghazi, etc. You can never really know what you're going into so if you KNOW you're going into a hostile enviornment...carry ammo.

IMHO ranger beads were always useless because you never walk in a straight line, so your pace count is likely going to be off as soon as you step off. Plus, if you are counting in your head every step you take, then you aren't probably paying attention to what is going on around you. Just my unsolicited two cents :)
@jayneubauer34013 ай бұрын
not sure about Seals but Marine Recon teams are typically 4-6 guys, and 2 are designated as pace counters, so there are still eyeballs on your surroundings, not to mention your pace should not be that fast, unless you are breaking contact.
@jayneubauer34012 ай бұрын
@LongFatJohnston that is all fine and well, unless you are in heavy woods or jungle. Then pace count is critical if you can't see much of the terrain around you to associate to. And everyone, in my team anyway, knew their pace count on flat land as well as in tougher terrain. It got us ballpark until you could verify.

They are constantly talking about narcissists. They seem to be unaware of every other type of related psychological behavior, except narcissism. The label allows them to deeply vilify those they struggle with, shirk their responsibility to empathize with their opponent, and distance themselves from the narcissistic tendencies they actually have themselves.
