The "Autobiography of a Yogi" is an incomparable introductory to a world that lies beyond and behind the circumscription of mortal identification. The Autobiography of a Yogi, as all his writings, I have found to have a life of their own. In that whenever I am in need of a solution to a personal concern no matter what it is a random selection always seem to relate to the concerns of the moment. A disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda in this lifetime, for almost fifty years, and the gratitude keeps ever flowing unabated. His representation of Both Relative and ABSOLUTE TRUTH, are comprehensive. I read his writings every day with every meditation session of two a day, and practice his KRIYA YOGA meditation techniques during each session, with a collective average of five to seven hours each day morning and night.

In the way Yogananda came to the States it needs to be remembered he v much followed and echoed the template laid down by the great Swami Vivekananda, who came before Yogananda. Y. even copied his arrival by also delivering a speech, Vivekananda to the Parliament of Religions in Chicago 1893, Yogananda to the International Congress of Relgions in Boston 1920. Curiously both of these Saints came from Calcutta and their own Gurus knew and met. In fact Sri Yukteswar was on the verge of giving his assets to the Ramakrishna Mission, they were so closely related. It’s a v striking synchronicity of Sages & Saints manifesting at the same time and place and worthy of closer consideration.

All this is in the movie ‘Awake’ produced under the guidance of Self Realization Fellowship, the organization Yogananda himself created for spreading the ancient teachings of Kriya Yoga. And the rest of important info about Yogananda can be found in his ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ and ‘Mejda’, a book written by Yogananda’s younger brother. Yogananda’s teachings are in the lessons he wrote which are available to everyone who wants to subscribe to them. Also, there’s a lot of other books that Self-Realization Fellowship publishes that are written by Yogananda himself.

Mr. Goldberg is incorrect to say that PY was the first Indian teacher to stay permanently in America. Swami Paramananda (Boston Vedanta/Ananda Ashrama CA) came to the USA before PY (1906) and stayed until his death in 1940. Also, there were Swami Trigunatita (1902) and Swami Prakashananda (1906)--Vedanta Society of Northern California--although they didn't live as long. (PY was known as "Swami Yogananda" until the title "Paramahansa" was bestowed on him in 1935 by Swami Sri Yukteswar.) As Mr. Goldberg relates, PY did work tirelessly in America for 32 years, as did Swami Paramananda for 34 years, also crisscrossing the country by train, lecturing in rented halls, establishing centers, and writing articles and books. It's been said that they knew one another in CA and, of course, respected one another. Swami Prabhavananda, founder of the Vedanta Society of Southern California, and PY were fellow students at Calcutta University, but he came to America a few years after PY (1923). He left his body in 1976 at 82 so he outlived PY by 23 years.

Mary Baker Eddy had a Spiritual Awakening & established her very Spiritual Christian Science teachings in Boston since 1890s. ( on reading Autobiography of a Yogi I almost 'jumped ship' & left the 2nd meditation course I was on in Rishikesh with Maharishi but as Maharishi subsequently said I became 'caught' on experiencng ever deeper levels of unconditional Divine Love in meditation there)

I am an Australian woman who met up with a couple of young male spiritual seekers my age in a regional Tasmanian city way back in about 1965. One of them lent me his copy of 'Autobiography of a Yogi' at that time which I absolutely loved and devoured. At about that time I was very open to Hindu spirituality and began my trek by air and train with the friend who owned the Yogananda autobiography to Melbourne, the capital city of the state of Victoria as we had heard of Transcendental Meditation taught by Hindu teacher Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who had begun to train teachers for Australia after living in the US for a number of years. I travelled up to Sydney where I later learnt TM and joined a community there in Woollahra. I went on to train in another advanced course of TM in the Blue Mountains in the state of NSW

What utter nonsense . There are great saints of India who did not practise Kriya Yoga and attained the highest level of God realization. How do you account for Ramana Maharishi, Swami Sivananda, Pappa Ramdas, Neem Karoli Baba, Anandamayi Ma, Shri Aurobindo, Shirdi Sai Baba and thousands of other great saints who didn't practise Kriya Yoga attaining the loftiest peaks of spirituality? Do not suffer from Kriya egoism simply because you practise Kriya Yoga. Kriya yoga is only one of the many spiritual technologies available to sincere aspirants to attain Self Realization. Think before you write.

On the other hand, I know SRF members who have been practicing Kriya Yoga for fifty years, and they're still a mess psychologically with no discernible spiritual evolution. The hype in AY seems a little over-the-top. "10 million lifetimes" is silly talk. Also, perfect meditation by definition would give you samadhi. Divine grace is the key always--not any type of meditation or breathing technique.

There is first Sri Aurobindo who transformed our present views of the future. Is there anything like his „ Life Divine“ ? The truth Sri Aurobindo provides us is that we the homo sapiens species once evolved from the homo erectus species and that the period of the homo sapiens has come to its end also and will be replaced by a similar far higher species with a supramental consciousness. Sri Aurobindo spent all his life to let this supramental species come to earth. He worked in his Ashram in Puducherry with a personality called the Mother, our Mahashakti. She founded Auroville with the tempel Matrimandir .

Yogananda's asignment to the US, from wayback and behind, was karmic. It was part of his karma from past lives, still at a very high level of development but karma nevertheless. It was part of his development as a Guru, which he already had been as attested by his disciples in the US reincarnated from discipleship with him in past lives. Although they continued their development with him, he also continued his development as Guru with them.

@WakingEssence You might be right and probably are. However you are not going to be telling me lots and lots of information, mentioning references for me to explore, telling me, rigjtly so, that all religions lead to God, something that I "did not know" but still neither now know but accept because you tell me, but I cannot put two and two together and reach a conclusion. I do not "know" but I can surely speculate and conclude. There is very commonly observed that people who identify totally with something like this they have found, to believe that, really because now they are into it, the whole thing is excluded from things that affect us. I am a formal student of Yogananda and as such I come across expressions and manifestations that pretend that Yoganada knew everything to be known, shared it and thats the end. You hear that ha "was alreafy one with God" that he was above the law of karma and other things not in so many words . but if you read and conclude by yourself, you reach different conclusions, and express it. The explanation as it has reached me about karma, makes so many things fall in place, that I try to speculate and wonder about it constantly every where. Babajii told Yukteswar, check it if you can, 'I am going to send you a disciple" Guess who? That sounds pretty karmic to me.

@heddygreen-o1h It was heavily edited before publication by Tara Mata (Laurie Pratt), but the edits earned the full approval of PY, who said she was in tune with him spiritually and mentally. His mastery of English was not at the level of someone like Swami Vivekananda. After her passing in 1971, Mrinalini Mata (Merna Brown), a selfless and very devoted longtime disciple, became the chief editor of his writings. She also was in deep attunement with PY. His writings, which were usually given in the form of dictation, have never been ruined by any of the editors, only made suitable for book form.

As typical with humans, the video interview was too much about other things than the subject title "What You Don't Know of Paramahansa Yogananda", which is in many ways disappointing but highly predictable as a human tendency and result of the human consciousness or human mentality. This other stuff, of which mostly comprised the interview or talk, one can get from elsewhere.
