All of my cast iron has been free. My old lodge Dutch oven had some kind of tarry substance glopped in the bottom. I sand blasted it, which is extremely effective at removing sadness and rust, and the sand will help prevent rust until the pan can be seasoned.

FYI, I had a 10 inch cast iron skillet for 35 years with perfect seasoning: eggs slid off that thing. One day my hand slipped and it fell to the ground, empty thank goodness, and it split in two. I was heartsick and replaced it with a Lodge. Alas, I won't be alive in 35 years so the replacement will never be as seasoned. Also, I've cooked and braised many a tomato sauce or citrus based recipe in my various cast iron cookware, after at least one year of it being seasoned, with no issues. Same goes for using soap to wash the plans. The secret to cast iron is to use the cast iron.

As somebody that appreciates cast iron, I liked how you highlighted the history and explained why cast iron is cool. I'm glad this came up in my KZbin algorithm. I didn't even realize what a small channel this was until halfway through the video. Also, is that AI generated art at 3:28?

I’ve got a couple of these new rough Lodge cast iron pans and I just sanded them to a smooth finish myself so now they work as good as my old family pass down Wagner cast iron cookware.

I love that! I've been thinking of getting a Lodge just to sand it down. What was your process?

@@noah_bristol-Life-UpgradesI don't know when I first got back into cast iron I burnt a lot of stuff on my Lodge skillet. Enough times around with a chainmail scrubber will smooth it out. My pan looks almost milled now. It didn't take long to achieve this either, I've only had it for like 2 months. It's completely non stick and just as smooth as my mom's old BSR skillet. People make a big deal about the rough texture but it'll go away in no time, if not with scrubbing it'll fill out with seasoniing. You just gotta screw up and burn enough food on there you're scrubbing the soul out of it everyday and you'll see a difference. In all seriousness though it was a happy accident, now it's a beautiful smooth pan and I didn't even mean to do it. I also got a fajita pan from a local restaurant that has been worn smooth. You could argue it's more satisfying when you get a smooth pan after you've put in all that work on it. It just builds the bond stronger.

I tried that with one of my modern pans. For me it didn't workout so well, I Polished the thing to damn near mirror is where I think I goofed. Anyway it just refuses to take a season now.

"I'm a smoothie" goes hard. Sweet video...a lodge 14" i got a couple years ago finally is a smoothie after much trial and tribulation, not only can it cook an omelette with a tiny drop of oil, you can later make a pizza in it! Delicious!

@@noah_bristol-Life-Upgrades intermittently cleaning it with steel wool pretty sure that helped alot and scrubbing all the time with coarse salt and a rag when i clean it

@@gavinosullivan9027That's how mine ended up smooth too, just a lot of scrubbing with a steel wool.

Yeti isn't a cast iron maker. They simply partnered with Butterpat to put their name on one of their cast iron products and upcharge it by $50. The difference between smooth and rough is a largely overblown issue. There certainly can be a such thing as too rough (I have a cheap cast iron grill pan that matches this). But something like a Lodge, used properly, is just as non-stick. The main advantage to the smoothness is looks and an argument could be made for cleaning. But thats the same argument that can be made for how rougher pans hold seasoning better.
