would add it's also largely about trauma and how it twists people, from thorfinns trauma of the loss of his dad twisting him to seek vengeance at all costs, resulting in him being nearly an empty shell later down the road haunted by what he had done in pursuit of said vengeance, to the events that changed then Prince Canut from a passive and at least somewhat compassionate person to how ruthless he became later on, with the trauma of those events, along with the power of the crown, visibly poisoning his vary thoughts to the point he killed his own brother and made war on his own people just to steal land.

The Viking age was one of the most brutal periods in history so it's the perfect setting for this story. Not only that but Norse culture glorifies war and violence so it's absolutely genius to have the main character come from that kind of culture. It makes the rejection of violence and war all the more special. In a culture that values pride and honor above all else, it's a big thing for a character to reject that warrior pride and honor and live as a truly honorable man

Yukimura explained in an interview that he didn't necessarily want to create a manga about vikings but one about violence, and he later settled to the viking age

Then why is the second season about loving your brothers from other mothers? Imma have to agree with the short on this one chief. It's less violence, more "true warrior".
@luceafarul5740 Жыл бұрын
@@hen-lwhat does "agreeing" even mean? I didn't state my opinion, i just mentioned what yukimura, aka the author of the story, said in an interview (most likely the one with gigguk). He explained that he writes about three themes (love, life, death), and that he wanted a setting that is full of violence. He then thought that the viking age is the most appropriate setting because they are the most violent

Thorfinn is one of the few protagonists who actually sticks to their beliefs, even when it’s hard. After season 1, he never kills another person. He does pull a few badass Thors moments where he has to beat sense into people when pushed to the absolutely edge, but he never kills again, ever.

While battles the first season showed were awesome, I understood as soon as I started watching season 2 that it was not going to be the focus at all, like, this is a manga that's often compared to Berserk which isn't only about fantasy monster and warriors or Vagabond which isn't only about Samurai mastering the sword, of course this was not going to be only about Viking wars.Tthe really good shonen-esque action sequences is what deceived people with 0 knowledge about Vinland Saga I guess

But it is also about vikings lol. It’s about how their way of thinking was so violent and dumb, it talks a lot about the religion, discrimination, love, slavery etc. The main themes of course are: if people really can change, and how they can change, what’s the cause of not changing ? Why were vikings so violent ? Is it fine to taint your pride for your life ?. There’s just too much u can’t say that Vinland is just about the struggle of trying to be a better person, it’s way more than that.

the way i see it they made lots of cash from season 1 and then come in season 2 with this bs. Season one is basically a drawn out backstory for Thorfin if they started the whole series on the farmland saga, then no one and i mean no one would watch it. So stop defending it and trying to make people who don't want to watch it seem like freaks. Everyone is allowed to watch what they want. And the show started off as a excellent Viking Shonen that was building up into some insane war manga. Unfortunately, it wasn't that and people are annoyed and they aren't wrong i was a little annoyed also hence why i won't be watching. But please do go around saying that those who stop watching are just hungry for fight scenes.

It is oversimplifying it. I think a better framing is that Vinland saga is about suffering and ideals. Thorfinn has an unimaginably cruel fate placed upon him from the start. His father who tried teaching him a better way failed and died, and he spent the next 11 years singlemindedly trying to live up to the ideals of his people because as a young child he couldn’t live up to his father’s ideals yet. At the end not only was he unable to avenge his father, he has the very notion of fairness and honor thrown like sand in his face and then is forced to watch as the person who is the object of his passions dies, leaving him with nothing. He’s failed the real ideals of his father, he’s failed the false ideals he clinged to because he was too weak to cling to the better ideals, works unimaginably hard and is met with failure even in this smaller goal. He’s sold his soul, pillaging and killing, and knows this ambition was all he had. But reality is unfair, just like it took his father it took away that decade. The set up is unimaginably well done. It’s not about being a better person, because Thorfinn was never aiming at that. It was about misplaced honor, violence, and ambition. It was about the unfairness of the world that is equal only in that it is cruel to everyone. And it is about the depths of emptiness a human can find themselves in if they fail themselves and everything they believe in.
