Crystal, I just reviewed this video again, and I am so grateful you posted it. I think it fulfills a real need. You mention Selenium and the critical need for it in areas of the country that are Selenium deficient. You go into it more here, how to diagnose kids who have a deficiency, which is lifesaving information. I've found a few videos on YT showing newborn kids with what looks like Selenium deficiency (could be something else). I learned it's far more important than I realized 2 years ago! I hope you repost this video again. Such great information.

This was very valuable for my goats over all. We are not even close with thinking about breeding. Just trying to learn from the two we have got them July 2018. I need to buy a few of these item to have on hand for general use. I would love to see a video about what you use and have on hand for general care. And maintenance. Also love to hear what works and things you tried and that doesn’t work. I read 3 books on goats before getting 2 and man in general newbies need a lot more knowledge than what’s on paper. Thanks for the amazon links much appreciated.

Thanks for this video! I have 3 does due any day, this will be our first kidding on our ranch. I have my 3 does penned together, should I separate them when they are closer to active labor? It seems to stress them out being separated so I’ve been keeping them all together for now.
@hollandspinehaven2634

Goats do like to have a quiet place to kid. If you catch one in labor I would pull the rest to let her be calm and deliver. Plus you want to have her and the kids time to bond well. That is usually a few days to a week. Hope that helps..

I agree to the previous comment. I like to let them get comfortable with their own pen at least a few days before they kid. They enjoy the private space when labor starts and they have kids.

Love all of your videos! Very informative. Quick question: do you find that a doe carrying a singlet has a longer gestation than the same doe when she's carrying triplets or quads? In other words, if she is carrying more babies does she tend to go into labor sooner? Thanks!
@BlueCactusDairyGoats
@BlueCactusDairyGoats 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly I have not experienced that in my herd. They are all usually super close to the 145 day mark if they have 4 or one. That being said, the couple times I have had a doe go earlier than the 145 day mark, they had 3 or 4 kids.

Hi. My family and I are going to be getting goats hopefully this spring or summer. Once the goats are old enough we plan on breeding them. With the umbilical cord, after you cut it and put iodine on it, what happens after that? Do you cut it more later? Does the mom take care of it?
@BlueCactusDairyGoats
@BlueCactusDairyGoats 5 жыл бұрын
We cut it about an inch long then cover in iodine. This will dry it up faster and kills any bacteria. If you see the next day it isnt very dry, put more iodine on it and you should be good. Never cut too short. It will fall off on it's own:)

My dairy goat head butted her day old baby goat. She is a young mother. I took the baby goat out of her pin and plan on bottle feeding the baby with it's mothers milk. Is this the best way to go? I was worried the mommy goat would hurt her baby.

Looking for tips, I'm a first time goat owner. We took a three week old buckling from our four year old Nigerian dwarf to bottle feed him. He's taking a bottle well. But my doe is sooo sad, psycho sad. Is this normal?? How many oz's should he be getting at 9 lbs. Since being with his mom so long it seems like he only wants to drink a couple oz's at a time. That isn't gonna work. Any tips on that would be appreciated too. Thank you.
@BlueCactusDairyGoats

This is one of the reasons we started pulling kids at a couple days old. So much easier on all involved. Three weeks is a hard age to separate. So much harder on the baby and mama. Yes it's normal for mom to be sad at that age of separation. How many days has it been? I will link a couple videos that may help.

Lesson learned, I'll tell ya! Today was day two. It was somewhat better, not good though. Not to mention the poor girl is being milked and on a milk stand for the first time in her life (4 years old). But she was a bit better on the stand tonight, and didn't squat! :) Thanks for all you do in helping me through this goat life.

Crystal, our Nigerian Dwarf doe just gave birth to twins (Victor and Violet) on February 6, 2019. When is your closest guess as to when our doe will go back into heat after having just given birth? We LOVE our babies, but don't want her bred again any time soon. Please let me know. Thanks! (This video was very helpful.)

First of all I have to say that I don't know very much about goats. That said- howcome people are always pulling kids out of the dam? It seems like that's something the animals would be able to handle themselves if the sizes of the parents were chosen well for breeding. Right now I do want goats, but if they need a bunch of assistance to give birth, maybe I don't after all. And I understand being prepared and that sometimes things happen, but it seems like (at least on the people I watch on here with goats) that everyone has to haul the kids out because they get stuck. Is that accurate or are maybe the people I'm watching just impatient?
@hollandspinehaven2634

Sometimes I think the babies just grow to big. Choosing the right size buck helps greatly. Our buck is a lot smaller then our does so our kids slide right out so far..hope that helps..
@BlueCactusDairyGoats

I have only had to assist a hand full of times. Assisting would be worst case and in most cases they do just fine by themselves.
@Pepsi13255
@Pepsi13255 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve raised goats for 15 years and only had to assist once,I overfed the doe and the kid ended up very large. It didn’t position correctly. As long as pregnant does are fed the proper diet and are in good health you will rarely run into issues. I see people pulling on kids all the time in videos but that is unnecessary 99% of the time. That said,it is always best to be present for kidding just in case. 😊 I wouldn’t let the small possibility of complications scare you away from raising goats.
