Spartanburg has a total of 7 colleges and universities and is home to the SC School for the Deaf and Blind . Ground was recently broken for a new baseball stadium downtown and the city is anticipating this will increase downtown redevelopment. A few curiosities about Spartanburg: it has one of the oldest law firms in the US, est 1825, it has one of the largest cemetery sculptures in the US, the Wonder of Life monument, it has the only active train tunnel in the state, the first college football game played in SC was played in Spartanburg, the words to the song Amazing Grace were set to music in Spartanburg, the British band Pink Floyd got the pink part of their name from a Spartanburg musician. Elvis Presley performed in Spartanburg and Martin Luther King’s uncle was once pastor of a church in Spartanburg.

Spartanburg’s municipal airport KSPA, was the first airport in SC. Both Emilia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh flew into KSPA.

I live in Forest City NC,but when I want to do extra shopping I take a 45min drive to Spartanburg. Always have a nice time there when doing errands.

Anyone can pick at any town, I get it. Been in the same house for 41 years and one mile from downtown, I love it. Hub City relates to the five independent rail roads that made Spartanburg the "Hub".

Well, this is embarrassing! I never knew about most of the Spartanburg restaurants you mentioned, and I've lived in the area most of my life...born "down the road" :) in Woodruff - the town, not the road (have to explain that to folk "not from 'round here!" LOLOL). Also, I always thought Spartanburg's nickname was "Sparkle City." I see sign references of Hub City, but never knew how that came to be given the history of the other "Hub City," as I remember it. Thanks for the info...it is enlightening!

Hub City is an older nickname for Spartanburg. It originated in the heyday of the railroads because of railroad tracks that radiated out from the city like the spokes of a wheel. Sparkle City originated from a 1950’s rock group from the area who achieved national fame called the Sparkletones. It is said that Elvis Presley got the idea of wearing sparkly clothes from the Sparkletones.

Yeah that’s the Duncan area. Lots of growth in that part of the county and highway 290 has a bunch of retail, and communities nearby.

I love Spartanburg but I used to work for Syncreon (part of BMW) and there's never enough WORK!!!! And even though they send you home halfway through the day they still force you to work OVERTIME and holidays and work is going just fine they still yell at you and withhold information🥴

Spartanburg’s primary retail district is the Westgate Mall area on the west side just off I-26 about 2 miles from downtown. Last year the city announced that baseball was returning to Spartanburg, and site preparation is now underway for a new stadium and mixed use development downtown. The city is counting on this to jumpstart downtown revitalization. Ground was recently broken for a planetarium at the public library downtown which will be only the 2nd planetarium at a public library in the US. Sometime this year, a remodeling of Morgan Square is going to begin, and implementation of a plan to beautify and stimulate investment on the W. Main St. gateway into downtown. The present city hall is going to be demolished this summer and construction is going to begin on a first in the state joint city/county administration complex. The new Spartanburg County courthouse opened this week.

Greenville is the best choice in that region. The crime rate is much higher in Spartanburg. The difference is what you get from good conservative leadership and rotten liberal leadership.

Spartanburg has a large nonprofit hospital system , with the main hospital and Many Black campus being in the city. It also Pelham Medical Center near the GSP airport, hospitals in nearby Gaffney and Union and doctors practices called Medical Group of the Carolinas. Among other things, the hospital system has a Level 1 trauma center, cancer center, and women’s breast heath center. Wikipedia states that the Spartanburg Hospital system was the first in the US to develop a HERT team for disaster response.
