One way to not pay taxes on your gain is to set up a Roth IRA account and trade in it. All gains are taxe free.

How do taxes on assignments work? I was recently assigned to sell 7000 shares of a stock I don’t own so to cover myself I had two different long legs of the call debit spread exercised to wash out the assignment. Would I be paying taxes on the total loss which only would be what I paid to enter the spread or would I be taxed on the assignment too even though the assignment premiums was canceled out from me exercising my long legs of the position?
