Some necessities for hostel stay not included in the vid: 1) Headlamp. I hate people who open the light in the wee hours because they need to go through their stuff or go to the bathroom. Headlamp also makes you hands-free so you can easily pack your luggage even in the middle of the night. 2. Lightweight bag. So I can easily carry my valuables wherever I go like the bathroom or the dining hall. 3. Foldable hanger. I just prefer to hang my jacket and hostels never provide hangers.

Should do a collab with the lockpicking lawyer! I do not think he approves of the lock.

LOL yesss you are 100% correct! See my comment above! I've managed to decode my own locks by feeling, but it takes a long time.

Excellent hostel hacks! I stayed in hostels (albergues) for 7 weeks on the Camino Francés walking across northern Spain. Traveling with a light backpack means minimal clothing, but more laundry. I did a lot of hand washing using laundry sheets. Hang clothes using large safety pins where clothespins are not provided. Also unavailable, but useful: A small fingernail brush for removing trail dust from the tops of hiking boots. And bring a length (7 feet) of parachute cord with adjustable tension clasps at each end (DIY) to string to the underside of an upper bunk to hang clothes overnight to finish air-drying or to hang your towel for a little extra privacy.

With Nalgenes, if you do happen to break it, take a picture of it and you can contact the company through their site and get it replaced for free. Super easy process!

Manta Sleep Mask. You may have seen a lot of advertisement for it. There is a reason. It is the best, by far. For 100% protection do: 3M FX Earplugs or Apple AirPods Pro 2 with a normal headset over, like Bose 700.

I did not choose to stay in hostels in my teen years of travel, with no regrets. I don't care for party hostels. However, later in life as I traveled all over the world to trek or climb mountains I liked the simplicity of hostels as you're really only there to sleep and having the kitchen to prepare one's food is fantastic. In this video you show someone in the same room yammering away on a cell phone. That is a strict *NO* in hostel protocol. If you have to make a phone call you go to a common area or at least out into the hall. If you cannot pack your bag by the light of your cell phone or a headlamp if you choose you drag it out to the closet or you pack it before the evening. If anyone ever tried to turn on overhead lights at 3 a.m. to pack their bag they would get a sound trouncing!!

Detroit gets a lot of negative press, but it’s one of my favorite cities to visit! It’s home to vibrant arts and music communities, lots of innovative entrepreneurs, and has a fascinating history that speaks deeply about the larger American experience.

i would recommend a stronger lock. those small combo locks are easily opened. a ABUS 64TI/40 Titalium is a much more secure choice.

Earplugs can definitely be a life-saver! The flip-flops are a good idea too. I recently bought some North Face flip-flops, but these look smaller and lighter.

This tip is specifically for people who get periods, remember to pack lightweight devices such as reusable menstruation cup, reusable pads, or period underwear depending on the length of your hostel stay. Good luck and enjoy your day!

To the women as well, Thinx just settled a lawsuit that proved they used carcinogens in their underwear. So uh, maybe use a different brand.

I highly recommend a stronger, key padlock. The ones with digits are easy to open once you know how (even without trying combinations) and if the metal is too thin you can break it with a lever, so a spoon or a knife is enough to break it open. I also recommend not bringing too expensive gear since it might get stolen. I've been through a couple of hostels in December 22 and fortunately only a razor got stolen. But if it is would have been a 40$ razor, it would be a loss. Now I can recommend the Gilette Sport handle with Fusion heads and normal soap or shaving soap. Very lightweight and long-lasting. Don't forget a face mask for sleep since some hostels have very annoying lights. Great video. Definitely useful.

The point about Havaianas is not style. Compared to budget flip flops Havaianas are made of a more compressed material, so you can place them in your bag shortly after shower or beach and they will not still be wet the next day.

I've seen you talk about a few utensil options, but I prefer the Magware magnetic camping utensil set. They're aluminum and weigh 2 oz as a complete set. And, bonus, they're cool as heck.

30 years ago, I was supposed to backpack/hostel my way thru a 2 week trip to Europe with my friend, but in England, the shower was gross and she didn't bring slippers. Then they made us change rooms almost every night of our stay. After that, it was hotels only. LOL. I do love most Japanese hostels, and in that situation, I'd carry collapsible chopsticks and a handkerchief. In China, I'd carry TP. Actually, any hostel I'd take TP cuz I couldn't find any in my Maui air bnb. Great list.
