If you haven't been to a Brazilian rodizio-style steakhouse, the option may be a little intimidating. Endless rounds of skewered meat carried by knife-wielding gauchos may seem threatening, especially if you are a person of normal appetite worried about the meat sweats! But not to worry, Brazilian steakhouses aren't always about gorging yourself - you can just as well use the opportunity to try a wide variety of Brazilian foods.
With the right strategy, you can get the most for your all-you-can-eat money, without going into a food coma afterwards. Of course, if you do want to eat till you burst, this option remains available to you. Here are the best and worst things to order at a Brazilian steakhouse.

I live, basically, next to a Fogo de Chao in downtown Austin. I would love to eat there, but it is very expensive. And it seems to be an all you can eat type of place. All I can eat wouldn't feed a bird for an hour. Not worth it, Still, looks marvelous. If you are going to go for the salad bar, save it for dessert. Trust me, salad is best served at the very end of the meal. Lawdy, I'm hungry now.

Some tips when you go to a Brazilian Rodizio(All You Can Eat) restaurant: 1. They usually start with chicken and sausage, chicken because it's cheap. The expensive meats comes at the end 2. Try eat a bit of everything in the beginning, you can repeat later the plates you liked. If you're almost satisfied and just want a final slice of picanha just ask the waiter and he bring to you 3. I usually eat the salad not first but after the first round of meat, the vegetables help the digestion(well, works for me lol) 4. There's a lot of salt in the meat so try not to drink much soda, carbonated drinks take away your appetite. The best drink off course it's water but ice tea or juice also helps. If you drink alcohol try caipirinha. After the meal you will feel very thirsty, it's because of the excess of salt in the food, drink as much water as possible for your body to eliminate all this salt from your body. 5. If you look the chicken hearts it's not very appetizing but try one, you might be surprised 6. Must try: polenta, feijoada, farofa(with feijoada, alone it's dry), cheese bread(It's completely different from what you're used to), vinagrete, picanha, costela, alcatra no alho(garlic rump), alcatra na manteiga(butter rump), grilled pineapple 7. Desserts...well, I'm brazilian but I don't like the Brazilian desserts offered in these restaurants, I think it's too sweet...after so much salt and fat I prefer something lighter, fruits are the best choice(for me) 8. Bon appetit and sorry my english, I'm still learning :)

As an American who lived in Brazil for 5 years: 1. Your English is just fine. You write better English than half the native speakers I know. 2. This is good advice, especially the advice about trying a little bit of everything at first. And I would add that it's perfectly ok to ask the server for just a tiny piece to try something. 3. I'll add another tip that a lot of times, especially with picanha, you want to avoid saying "yes" if you can tell the meat has made the rounds a few times because it starts to get tougher and more well-done (unless you like it that way). Wait a bit or just ask the server if they have any fresh or less well-done picanha. They're usually more than happy to tell you there's some coming in a little bit, or to make a request to the cooks for you.

How can you know if a Brazilian steakhouse is of good quality? Check their salad bars. If they look shitty and not appetizing, it's because their meat is equally bad. Good steakhouses will do everything to draw attention to their salad bars. It doesn't take a lot of work to grill some good meat, so their effort should turn to the salad bar.
@timwegman5776

This is good to know and actually makes a lot of sense much like a sushi restaurant that is not always busy and full of people will have poor quality fish due to low turn around and fish sitting in coolers much longer. So unlike other restaurants where "The Hole in the Wall" or "The Dive dinner" may be some of the best hidden and low volume places with the best food the Sushi restaurants do not follow this rule unless of course they are like I said super busy high turn over hole in the wall places.

As a Brazilian the last thing I would recommend as a side dish at a steak house is "farofa". I like "farofa", but that will absorb a lot of water in your stomach and make you feel full faster. If you want to have "farofa" "for the cultural experience" have it somewhere else, or just have a small spoon just to see what it tastes like. Also, feijoada is an experience on its own and it's very heavy food, so again, have it somewhere else or go another day and pay for the buffet only, if that is possible. Now, when you're only having a feijoada I do recommend you help yourself with the farofa. That's when it will shine.

I’m Brazilian hubby American he goes put one tiny spoon of rice from the buffet and will eat any meat all meat just meat me I will entertain my self in the buffet rice and beans and all the salad bar has to offer and if he really likes a certain meat will give one piece to try I will eat the pineapple though. So is about what you like and free choice there is no right or wrong the only thing is alcohol extremely expensive as the desert but if your pockets are deep enough go for it they are delicious and worth every penny

If you're going because you want to stuff yourself for cheap, why not just go to Golden Corral or your local Chinese buffet. Otherwise, how about eating a little bit of everything so you'll know what you want most the next time you come. And have a little salad anyway so you don't pop an aneurysm the next day trying to pass all that digested meat. And if you like spice, don't miss the cachaça & habanero cocktail.

I would give a 'better' advice: Don't make it a pure cost/benefit analysis. In rodizio you can keep talking with your friends, you will not wait to be served with decent quality food nor even need to worry about the bill, just enjoy it. Also try different food preparations, don't mind if you're 'losing money'. I can't tell about US but in Brazil the salad buffet is pretty decent, so you can even invite vegetarian people (if they don't mind of other people eating meat in the same table).

pao de queijo is tempting I know, but you MUST resist. It's dangerously addicting and obviously will fill you up quick. If you know anything about beef, basically just go for the expensive cuts with lamb being a personal choice of mine to throw in the mix. I'll get something acidic from the salad bar to help cut the richness and reduce flavor fatigue from all the meat.

Feijoada is AWESOME, but a totally different type of meal. So if you want to try it, go to a place specialized in feijoada. And farofa is reeeeealy good, but it is a side dish that goes very well with rice and beans or feijoada, but not really an ideal side dish for a stakehouse. And DO TRY chicken hearts... they are chewy but the taste is very good. In general, this is a really good video with accurate advice.

@@carlos_takeshi interesting. I was thinking about “churrascarias” in Brazil and despite the fact there are quite important differences in styles between North and South it’s pretty common to find braised chicken heart. Maybe it can be a bit strange to the American taste to keep it in the menu. My advice is try to DIY! It’s quite simple.

I love Brazilian steak houses but I just don't have the patience, every time I take the family we wait and wait for the meat we want bit get so hungry waiting that we end up just eating the next skewer to hit the table and it usually end up being sausage or chicken smh. I will say this there are only a couple Brazilian steak house close to use and it very well may be that these places. I do know that I have yet to get the elusive picanha. Another issue is I get full fast and don't eat large meals thats bad for an all you can eat restaurant however my thinking was it takes a long time for the next meat to arrive at our table so I would have time for my food to settle before the next and although this may be a bit true I just get to impatient to sit at the table for two hours and if I do I end up drinking too many beers lol. I will say I still have a blast with the family and even with everything I just said I still enjoy going to a Brazilian Steak house.

Never saw this bacon wrapped fish/seadfood in Brazil, or at least never ate it. Never found a "chorizo" (we call it linguica) the same as the Brazilian one outside of Brazil, its always inferior (at least for my taste). If youre ever in Brazil, please get CUPIM, you usually cant get it anywhere else, since its only found in Brazilian (and south american) cattle.

The filet is good there(FOGO), but if you haven't noticed, it's not full cuts of filet, (they likely will deny this- but, if u eat & cook enough filet, you know what it's supposed to look like) Look up the video about "Meat Glue" you likely will cut back on your visits to the Brizillian steakhouse after seeing it. It's still delicious food, it's just a slight deception to maximize their bottom line.. Which makes me rethink that pre-tax, no drinks $60/plate pricetag. (I used to go about every couple months for birthdays/ special occasions/dates, I'm now down to once every couple 2-3 years.. & since the last time i was there in 2019, the high quality of the service & food has declined, while the prices have increased. (About 20% decline/increase) its definitely an enjoyable experience for those not on a budget..just don't think about the meat glue..lol

Being an actual Brazilian, who knows good Brazilian Steak, I usually just get the Salad Bar option when I go to places like Fogo de Chao. Even though the meat is good, especially if you are not familiar with the real stuff, I find myself more satisfied with just the salad bar, both physically and economically: I mean, the Salad Bar, or more accurately, the "Market Table" option comes with the super high-end salad bar, plus Feijoada, caramelized pineapple, polenta, fried banana, and everything else except the meat!.... and, it's only 15 bucks for lunch compared to the 45-50 dollars for the "full experience" with meat!!
