I want to thank you. I took your advice from one of your other videos and it saved a laptop I own that I thought was ready for the trash. It's working again probably for many years or longer since it was functionally replaced years ago and so will not have a heavy usage put upon the machine. Thank you Thank you

Same thing happened to my sister's old Macbook. One day it just completely died and wouldn't turn on at all. No LED on the Magsafe charger. Just completely dead. Bought a charger from Amazon, plugged it in and the Macbook now works. Sometimes the simplest things can cause what looks to be a more complicated problem (dead or unstable device). Gotta start with the basics before moving on to more advanced stuff. So far I can only troubleshoot basic problems (that don't require e-surgery). The more advanced stuff, such as board repairs, are out of my skill set right now. I hope to one day comfortably be able to move on to the more advanced stuff. It's fun taking something that's broken and watching it come to life.

Hi Sorin, here at our lab we stick the charger on the Electronic Load, then we have this controlled directly, but thats just because we have to fill in this form for the customer, otherwise for the most guy´s here like you say, get hold of a few chargers, fleemarkets have loads of them for small change and have them handy to test with.. :-) Have a wonderful day you all BR / Andy Ps. was looking at the other comments... ofcourse one can make connectors for the powersupply directly, and its a good thing, however if you have a bunch of powersupplys, then you immedialtly have a used one to give the customer - thus a quick solution :-)

@qwertzuiop77415 жыл бұрын
Problem is opening of that thing. Cases of chargers like that are either glued or sonic welded. If you get it open, you can check for obviously leaking electrolytic capacitors. If you find them, you can replace them, and - most probably - you will have working charger. With broken cover, which is the reason nobody in first world will bother with repairing it. Edit: Yes, it is definitively possible to repair it, and usually quite easy. But these things have mains voltage inside, and you don't want to give a mains voltage device with broken cover to a layman paying customer. New one (offbrand) will cost like 20 quid.

After opening it he can glue it with hot glue

Sorin, what i'm using to check the power supply if it can still deliver the needed current is by using ang adjustable current dummy load.. Or if i'm lazy i'm using a bulb to load the power supply then measure the voltage while the bulb is connected. If the voltage drop too low i know there's a problem with the power supply. That's how i check the current.
@vasilispapas4823 жыл бұрын
I think that the first think you mast check before trying any repair is the cost of a new purcase , as in a lot of cases repairs are posible but are not recomended because the cost of them is higher or near to cost of a new one. On the other hand repairs which performed without using of original spear parts are more emergency paches and less official repairs, as none can warranty about their last lifes or if the machine will work properly in the future. These practice are very usefull if you want to indentify the problem and give to customer a real report about the reason which cause the problem.

First question I would ask is 'was it powering up with just the battery' if it was used without the mains power supply - helps to narrow down if it's a power supply issue or not (provided the battery is charged of course!) - if you don't have access to multiple chargers etc, this is an easy check :)

Charger has to be able to provide enough power to run the laptop. The voltage of a malfunctioning charger can measure good with no load (unplugged) but can collapse when plugged in and loaded. I purchased a "broken" laptop once that required a 90W charger but the person who sold it to me was trying to use a 45W charger with it. It worked perfectly once I used a 90W charger. Not enough AMPS! :D

Why not test charger under load ? What about connecting an 100 watt 6 or 8 Ohm resistance on the charger output (only for a few seconds if you have not mounted the resistance on a heatsink) and measuring with a multi-meter if the voltage is being decreased considerably ? Also a cheap oscilloscope could be used.

Most common problem for old Sony Vaio was when they overheat desolder the pins on CPU every time you need hot gun to solder back and if heat again you need to do again. That was low quality solder used by Sony what I remmeber 400-500C melting point.

What about a current clamp should we try with It or It does not work , if not why?
@brk9325 жыл бұрын
Current clamp would work if it is inductively "connected" (coulped) to the circuit loop but since the ground/negative and power(positive) wires are not separated and follow the same path also the grounding usually shields the power wire. So NOT with the stock charger. Some clamps can't measure DC and most are quite crude with small currents. DC clamps use Hall effect sensor to measure the magnetic field created by the flowing current. If you can split the wires you can ... but why not use a power supply with a built in ammeter?
