I would 100% be a van lifer if it wasn't for having to find a sleeping spot every night. There is something about that stress that I wouldn't enjoy especially as a senior. I did live in a small travel trailer (120 sq ft) for about ten years, but it was parked in a secure yard. I built my tiny house (384 sq ft) about five years ago and although I have outside maintenance to do, at least I'm planted in one spot. Kudos to you, Amber!

It's so hard trying to find a sleeping spot when you're in a van.🚐 I tried sleeping in it, but the police always knock on the people's windows to wake them up, because they're jerks, and they start rumbling through your stuff and some of the stores call the police and the people snoop around you while you're sleeping.🚐 They try to bother you, so it's awful being invaded upon. There's just no insulation. You need so much electricity all the time. It's freezing in the winter, it's too hot in the summer. It's just about being homeless.

If you need a safe spot for the night, find a local fire station. The vast majority would have no problem with a van for a night. They would probably even let you top off your water tank if you need it. Sure, you can't dump but you take what you can get sometimes.

I like how you acknowledge that stealth camping doesn't mean being invisible. That it really means being inconspicuous and trying to not draw unnecessary attention to your van. There are SO Many other VanLife KZbinrs who think they are so slick with their stealth setup and that no one will notice them. I just chuckle at that. Speaking as a non-van life person who stays in a house, yes we notice when there are vans or RVs parked nearby. Of COURSE we notice. It's a big van! But if you keep to yourself, keep the area clean around the van, don't make loud obvious noises, and not stay in the same spot all the time, then we generally won't say anything. It's basically an unspoken "gentleman's agreement". You (VanLife person) be respectful, and we'll turn a blindeye to your Van being parked there for a short while. It's great that you are aware of the unspoken rules. And you acknowledge that no Van is truly invisible or stealthy. It's about being respectful and acknowledging that no Van setup is ever invisible. It's about not drawing unnecessary attention, and moving when you don't feel safe or secure.

OMG Amber I've been behind in watching my videos, so I just saw this today. I know exactly where you were. I spent the winters of 2018 and 2019 in that exact area. Wow that brought back such good memories, I spent nights on the side street across from that Park and spent my days down at the DP Marina or in one of the Beach Parks between Laguna and SC. The first winter I made so many local friends, I joined a Ukulele group and a Jazzercise group and also showered at Planet Fitness up the hill. After about three months I eventually did get a ticket for parking on the street, but I did not want to leave so I placed an ad for parking space from 10 at night until 6 a.m. in someone's driveway and that's how I met my good friend Leslie. Right before lockdown I spent time in Anza-Borrego outside of Borrego Springs and later in Lake Havasu. This year I have stayed in place up in the Pacific Northwest on the Oregon coast due to Covid. My Lily and I love watching your travels, thank you so much for this video.

Your gray hair is attractive, your meals are fantastic. I'm sipping on my tea while watching you and now I'm hungry. I think I started watching you around 6am Michigan time. @akhamp19432 жыл бұрын
Beautiful views there! My question is if you are traveling and just how do you know where ok is in a town or city if you don't know the area? And you don't really feel like driving on or don't care to drive at night? You make it seem simple.....can't be all the time it would seem . Some say they park in hotel parking lots..usually you need a tag on your windshield or their may be security checking at night I have seen where more Walmarts and cracker barrel's are becoming unlimited too. If you were.to park on the street as you said...you are more likely you could get hit for one and 2nd.....if in a nicer area and neighbor notices unusual vehicle parked they will call the law to check it out....seems that would be very likely. So must be something more to it ....no? Maybe cause you and others have been van dwelling so long and visited same states or places that helps. Maybe not ....but to me I think it would. Not sure. Oh I see you parked next to a park not in a neighborhood on a street. 😊. Have great evening......be safe.
@henrietta92062 жыл бұрын
hey Amber, love the shares!! I wanted to add some inputs when you mentioned "calling the police" so...im not inclined to be tattletale..honestly! but I volunteered (at one point) ..with Prisons Ministry and heard stories TOO MANY TIMES that before anyone does a "Breaking and Entering" they will *_watch, watch, watch.... watch, and watch_* ...and keep watching/finding out about the area, WHICH is why, when I see vehicles parked around where we live, that are 'not regular' or belonging to those in the communities ...thats where the phone call drops....and not because my neighbors nor I liked chatting up cops just... when we start seeing vehicles that are novel to the area thats where our senses kick in.... also this area being occupied by a few elderlies we tend to want to "act first" and dont "regret later" It's a shame you guys are genuine good folks! but opportunists/criminals do the "lets blend in, hang around and watch" thing and having no way to distinguish ..the calls get dropped on everyone..

As a female, I feel like the only way a woman can be safe van stealthing is to have a toilet and shower in her van so she doesn't have to stop at gas stations or truck stops where she is most likely to be attacked. I see you using ear phones for the tv etc to be more stealth, and I have a question regarding your roof top fan (fantastic fan?) Are you able to use that at night or would it alert people to the fact that someone is sleeping in their van (home) . I would imagine you would need the air circulation of the fan to be comfortable. I also wonder why so many of the sprinter and dodge vanlifers vans are white...is it because the white would make people think it is a business van and not a home...or is it simply that most of those vans come primarily in white precisely because they are business vans?
@ifly64s2 жыл бұрын
Most of those vans are "Fleet Vehicles" which are purchased by businesses. White tends to be the color of choice.

Morning, I see that u have 93 thousand views on this video alone, so thats a lot of people ur influencing. 1st - first most cities have a no sleeping in ur vehicle ordinance on a city street. Thats why ur stealth. 2nd - Window shades in the driving area are not stealth. U shouldn't have anything in the driving area that would give away that ur in the vehicle. The best thing is a black out curtain that closes off the living area. 3rd - All necessary thing should be done at ur hang out spot, that includes cooking. The place ur going to be sleeping at is just for sleeping. Cool that u leave when u get up and immediately go to where ur going to hang out and then do ur business. 4th - I see all kinds of KZbin people giving advice to "van dwellers" on where to stealth camp. There always suggesting like motels, hospitals, shopping centers, churches, and auto repair shops. Anytime u drive onto these properties ur there to do business, other wise ur trespassing 5 - You have a very nice rig but its not stealth, especially with a bike on the back. Only the folks that have some kind of a commercial looking vehicle , like I do, can hid in plain sight. I have been on the road off and on since the mid '70s, and am currently out roaming the west coast. Peace

1. Thats not what I call stealth camping, its obviously an RV and any place you park it residents know someones living in it so youre going to get ****ed with. Leading to... 2. Is stealth camping legal? Depends on the jurisdiction but probably not. In San Diego there is a code against vehicle habitation. That means RVs, vans, cars, anything on wheels. However its not often enforced on its own if youre not a problem. Additionally the whole city has a ban on RVs, buses trailers oversize vehicles on any street between 2-4 am. This is where your big van (really an RV) is going to have problems that my honda odyssey minivan does not. Citizens are pissed off that they pay big money to live at the beach but RVs park on their streets so they call the law and police are now enforcing these laws with vigor. (Especially since local media ripped the mayor for not cracking down on it) The parking lots in mission bay park didnt used to get much enforcement (theyre closed to all vehicles from 2-4am) but due to the increase in visitors from out of town are now policing the lots and writing tickets, and moreover, have service officers hitting the lots at all hours and targeting RVs for vehicle habitation violations. They drive right past my minivan and hit the RVs, oldest and ugliest first. So in a nutshell, its always been illegal in this city but rarely enforced. Now because everyone heard about our great weather and came here to live in RVs, theyre putting the hammer down. You can still get away with it in a minivan, SUV, etc, if it doesnt look lived in. If youre in a camper or RV you aint gettin away with it for long, not in the parking lots or on the street.

San Juan Capo 😊 "Urban" by definition is a town or a city so while it may be by the beach near luxury homes, it's a city and much different than parking out on BLM or National Forest land which is what I typically would do. I want to show what stealth camping is like when you're not able to just drive up to some land and hang out there. Hope that makes sense.

@@storychasing Thanks for responding Amber. I do love your videos and have been watching since your class C RV days. Also, I do understand beach camping on the Pacific coast is different than desert, mountain or BLM National Forest camping. With that being said, I looked up the dictionary word "urban" and after reading it a few more times, I do not think it applies to the locations in this video. (Urban music is also listed in the dictionary) Possibly, locations near the San Diego bridge or near Venice Beach in Los Angeles come to mind. Nonetheless, I loved the stealth camping tips in the video. Great work and keep it up!

Thank you Amber for the tips.. your food always looks delicious.. does this stealth camping include class c RV? I'm looking for a class c between 19-25 ft. Want to park it close to my job for the time being so trying to learn everything possible before hand.. thx for another great video 💗🙏🤗

Sharon Steele 😊 I can include any RV, just know that it will be harder in anything larger than a car or van because of the "width" and sometimes "length" of the RV. You don't want to get hit on the street and you're a little less inconspicuous with such larger RVs.

I am so happy that you are feeling better with Noom! You are awesome! I also like the shoe storage hack! It gave me an idea for shoe storage in my truck camper. Enjoy life and love yourself and Lily!!!

10 minutes in ... and you haven't talked about where to park. You are in a beach parking lot with other van lifers around. Soooo you can overnight park there??? for free??? You are not saying that!!!

Very informative video Amber. Looked like a really nice area to camp. Those Moko Pots are great. Great quality coffee is essential. What hoses do you use for your tanks? Also did you have to add an elbow and regulator? Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving
