Folks making excuses for him aren’t taking into account his parents are exhausted and financially drained. He is grown. He can get a job. Doesn’t have to be a high paying job. But he is responsible for his life at this point. He’s taking advantage of his parents instead of taking accountability. Plenty of people, including myself, work even with anxiety and depression. It’s part of life and more common than you think. Some of the most successful people deal with anxiety, depression, ADHD, etc. Someone needs to give him some tough love. Coddling only makes it easier for him to stay stuck.

Laura thank you, yes my mind went to gee guy must be depressed. ok. this could be my son tho he is currently in prison. But he wants to come home to parole. oh trust me he is 47 strong as a bull. I gotta find a way to back out of agreeing for him to come home. He caught me off guard when he asked. What is wrong with Me? Like do I forget what a nightmare the last time he was here? If anyone can give me advice on how to have this conversation about not coming home. There are many valid problems with that picture. One No car. Two, live about an hour from town. 3, he is not gonna drive my car. So I say, but can see myself caving just so I do not have to drive him. ugh. sick and tired. Give me some ideas on how to start telling him No, not this time. Should I just say he caught me off guard? Help.

I don’t mind having adult children live at home. As long as they are making progress and working towards independence. It’s not love to allow someone to waste their life at your expense. Life is a terrible thing to waste.

What are your thoughts of adult children who do work full time and contribute some help whether financial or physical labor in the house? A friend of mine is proud of his independence and owns a home but he is drowning in debt where there is literally nothing left from his salary to save anything. He has a lot of student loans, a mortgage he just took on and a wedding expense which was on loan. It’s so bad he couldn’t afford his medical bill and ended up getting another loan for it. What is the true definition of financial independence? Is it really independent when the person is trapped in debt? My family has a huge fear of debt and properties my family owned were paid in cash. They were affluent which helped them achieve that but for ordinary working people it’s literally impossible unless some windfall were to happen. It has always been ingrained in me to never take on debt. I always pay my credit card balance in full and I paid for my college tuition in cash. I don’t earn as much money and applying for a better job is always an option but it’s really on the mercy of the employer and I’ve never been hired for those high paying jobs I applied for.

He needs to get off his butt. Life is HARD, sitting on your tail feeling sorry for yourself is is not going to help you better yourself. “Depression” is such an American concept. It is a luxury afforded to those in wealthy countries because in the majority of the world if you don’t work because you are “depressed” you will quite literally die because you will NOT be eating or sleeping under a roof.

People who think sad = depressed and stress = anxiety are worthless. Depression and anxiety rob you not only of the will, but of the ability to live. Don't think you know what it feels like just because you got sad or stressed. There's sad and then there's not leaving your childhood bedroom for 20 years as an adult. That's not lazy, that's being stuck and giving up.

So in exchange they let me stay at home. I don’t pay rent, but most of my money goes into the house anyway since I’m gonna inherit it someday. I’m just saying, there’s always a way. Dr. Phil doesn't offer like any solutions and also literally doesn't even ask like... WHY? Why is he sleeping til 2pm and obviously depressed?

Time to grow up. Yikes I married a man that still has his 29 year old only child living at home. She works 4 days a week. He works 60 plus hours a week . I take care of all household responsibilities.yard work ect .. it drives me crazy’s 2:59

There's not really an incentive to work hard anymore now that we realize homes, children, retirement are unobtainable. Seems smarter to just coast and enjoy the family you have today because there won't be any family in the future for us. Your husband works hard because he got to have wife, child, and home. Not sure if it was worth it to him, but at least he had an incentive. Why would you work 60 hours if you could never afford that stuff?

At 37 he was just ahead of the curve. Poor guy got shamed on TV for something common today. I'm sure that helped his mental health. Let me tell you when you're a 37 year old with no career living with parents your self esteem doesn't need any more holes poked in it. I guarantee whatever was going on in his head was far worse than any insults people want to hurl.

This is NOT a laughing matter, if something happens to his parents he would be left in the world F%IU%% up, and he will be unprepared with reality of life. Insurance $, most people leave behind will run out quickly with him not working , and no other savings. To me enabling a child is child abuse. He think he has depression now, he really will if he had no help and facing homelessness like so many. I have a 21 year old traveling and working in tourism, he still a younging and doing it, and this FULL GROWN man can't come on..

...I learned nothing from this video other than Dr Phil humiliated the guy (he deserved it). However, what I was hoping to learn was what the outcome was and how did they get this young guy to develop some self esteem and get motivated to gain his independence???

You don’t need self esteem to work a job . Depression can get better when you are doing something that makes you feel like you are contributing to society. He needs to get a job even if it’s just a job at 7-11 that’s the only way to get somewhere is to start .
