A new privacy study analyzed which data smartphones transmit to Apple and Google, even with telemetry options disabled. It turns out, iPhones and Androids not only send a number of identifiers on average every 5 minutes, some network connections even include location and nearby devices. Professor Doug Leith used a Google Pixel 2 and and iPhone 8 to uncover this data collection by iOS and Android and found out: It is near impossible to avoid it.

It is a matter of using the algorithm against Google, there isn't much people with interests linked to privacy and tracking prevention so it gets pushed to less people, as soon as we get a considerable number of people in this interest it will eventually show up. your talking about the hidden os on every phone iOS and Android running on top of it as virtual machine. The cell tower is the master and the phone is the slave. The cell tower can write or rewrite the software on the hidden os, it see everything, every data on your phone, because it has excess to the ram and the ram on mobile phones is not encrypted. All mobile phones to day are spyware it do not matter if on top is a Android, iOS, google free Android or Linux is, because the all use the hidden OS on the modem chip for the cell towers, also by the newer phones the modem chip is inside the cpu (arm). We need a now privacy and anonymous communication system, the tracing and spying must stop. Big companys and governments are the cancer for the human race.

You pay more for apple products because apple always inflates their prices (look for "apple monitor stand"), and it's kind of dangerous to make up stories on subsidies to explain why. Apple sends the mac addresses of all the devices in your network, which is terribly unnecessary and anti-privacy. They have no justification whatsoever and if they really cared they'd keep telemetry at a minimum. But there's no denying that Google is the worst of the two as they're primarily an ad company.

I know that you can block generel telemetry with pihole, but it's a lot harder when it comes to apple's. Blocking telemetry domains from apple typically breaks many core features like icloud-sync, weather, time checks etc. But i'm blocking apple's "metrics.icloud.com" and google's "app-measurement.com", which has been blocked over 1200 times in the last 24 hours.

Well, although one can install a custom ROM, the hassle of installing and the security concerns of root access really make it unfit for the majority of people, not to mention that many popular apps depend on Google Services, Banking apps mostly don't work and probably in a couple of years the rollout of the changes to safenet will probably render "mainstream" apps not usable in phones with an unlocked boot loader

Airplane mode? (maybe) That should require it not to send radio signals. Unfortunately this also means no internet requests can be send. Though it's quite possible it could *recieve* radio signals and then save the information from them for subsequent sending. F.E. receiving signals from GPS satellites and sending location logs as soon as airplane mode is disabled.

Probably most of the functions of the two operating systems would not work without this data, I know that there must be a part, large or small that I do not know, that is associated with how they generate money, information for partners and be able to make targeted advertisements. Then, until someone gets to know what information is sent, either use the phone and relax, or go back to the analog world. There's no other way.

What about a firewall? I use Netguard, which is a firewall application that works without root. It sends telemetry into a local vpn sinkhole, at least it claims that it does. It also has a integrated filterlist against ads and trackers. There are of course several other firewall apps that work with root. But the question remains if a firewall app can prevent the OS from sending unwanted telemetry.

installing a custom rom is not that big of a deal, it should be popularised a lot more. on android, almost all of the sneaky stuff is being done by the almighty 'play services' that has more rights than the phone's user on the device. getting rid of it or replacing it with microG not only stops the unwanted phone homes to google but makes the phone run faster and the battery last longer too..
