The "hose" moving the concrete is called a concrete pump. They're freeking awesome because back in the day, you needed a huge crane to put concrete down even 30 feet away from where the trucks backed up to. Even better, they don't need to build huge hills to move concrete from the foundation's edge. Just pour the concrete out of the truck into a big tub at the back of the concrete pump and pow, you can move concrete HUNDREDS of feet away from the end of the foundation.

Tiny English helpful tip. Pedestal. You can say Pe-DEST-tal. But no one says that in the US. Except Felix. Typical pronunciation is Ped-eh-stal. Very even spacing. No emphasis on the middle syllable. Not a big deal, but if you want, you may take it, or leave it. lol (Sorry to be PE-dan-tic. /s lol)

Statistically, you are going to lose the lottery. And statistically, 2024-YR4 will likely also be downgraded. But there is always a lotto winner. So who knows. Let's collect more data before moving to "worry" mode. And even then, let's check the plan, if indeed data suggests an impact, to see if we can actually mitigate this. 2032 is far enough off to come up with a good plan. And there is no better motivator to have a solid plan than mass destruction. Like all asteroid diversion plans, sooner is better than later for possibility of successful diversion.

I'm a long-time viewer of Felix but I have to say that the incessant shout out to the 2.5 million unsubscribed people has been old for a long time. The number of viewers who are not subscribed hasn't changed in months and yet they are still chooching away with this message. It's very off-putting. As of late, every title has been something around "Are they crazy!?" or "They're planning to do WHAT?!?", followed by content that is so not indicative of the title that yes, it is incredibly frustrating and annoying. I really do love your work Felix, but I've been slapping my forehead for the last 2 or 3 months at these titles and the never-ending message about the unsubscribed viewers. I don't even think you're reading these comments anymore.

It's not too crazy, mars gravity and atmosphere is weak, lower orbital velocity, and the sun's gravity helps pull starship towards earth on the return mission, so less fuel needed, and you can refuel before de-orbiting earth and landing.
@mp6756
@mp6756 4 күн бұрын
Sorry, it's a one-way trip. Elon will gladly credit your account for the return ticket price.
@Nathan-vt1jz
@Nathan-vt1jz 4 күн бұрын
@@mp6756 I’m sure there are some on the trip that will stay on Mars permanently, but there would be early return missions. My guess is they would send one ship to Mars with astronauts on board with a second unmanned ship bringing the first habitation infrastructure. This way they can also do a trial run of landing without risking the astronauts. Given the time between orbital launch windows, sending multiple ships at once might be advantageous (a lander, habitation, and refueling ship to remain in orbit).
@mp6756
@mp6756 4 күн бұрын
@Nathan-vt1jz It's cool to think about a return trip from Mars. As It is now, we can't manage to return 38 test tube size samples from the surface, lol. I'm extremely optimistic about the Starship program, and I believe SpaceX will succeed. SpaceX makes impossible look easy.
@evanmorris1178
@evanmorris1178 4 күн бұрын
That’s an exaggeration. NASA can’t do it at the moment. But a Starship “should” be able to Launch from Mars and get back to Earth. Of course the colonists will need to make fuel and refuel that ship. The much lower gravity makes this possible. If they can top off the fuel in orbit, the return trip could be even faster. There are various ways they can do this. From putting a tanker in Mars orbit from Earth, to launching 3 tankers per return ship, and transferring the fuel over. They will want to produce concrete, or an equivalent on Mars and at least paving a launch area, maybe even a flame trench. The easiest way to return NASA’s samples might be to launch a small “team” of Optimus robots and a smaller return rocket which they could deploy, load and launch. They could bring a small power plant to recharge themselves and work as long as they can to build systems to make fuel on-site. If the return rocket for the original plan has been built, they could use it, or even add another booster stage to do it better. There’s so much more room in a Starship.

When Elon Musk first came to prominence with his involvement of SpaceX i had followed the development of what i had thought an enlightened view of the need to develop a solution to preserving mankind. However, due to his unfortunate extolling of facist philosophies I dont have much faith in his vision of an attractive future and have no desire to see how he will further concentrate the nation's wealth into his own pocket. When Pad B is finished expect them to use it for a couple launches and if it isn't a disaster then Pad A will probably be rebuilt to match or even exceed Pad B.
@julianfp1952
@julianfp1952 5 күн бұрын
Agreed. SpaceX constantly refines the designs of its launch vehicles with various improvements on each new version until it gets to a stable production version. Stage zero is just as critical a component so I expect very narrow time windows when both pads at Boca are operational. The primary strategy won’t be to have 2 pads operational to increase launch cadence, KSC can add that extra pad, but rather to have one Boca pad operational while the other is being upgraded or more often essentially rebuilt to incorporate all the latest improvements.
@anthonylosego
@anthonylosego 4 күн бұрын
Also agree. I assume they'll both take some time to collect Pad B data to improve the upgrade to Pad A at the same time. And in addition similar improvements at Pad C at FL (though I don't know they are calling it that) However, if they have Pad A/C improved to a degree to work well with V3 Starship, they may well make a Pad D in FL to match, and most likely Pad D will incorporate a crew access arm by the time they start building it. It will need to happen around that time. And lastly, I don't think they'll be at a launch rate by then to prioritize launch numbers over innovation for more effective launch pads nor the need for crew loading earlier on.

@@jgrenwod I think they focused on not doing the "paralysis through analysis". Remember, the primary methodology is rapid iteration. Getting to the gold makes early penny picking look silly to later dollar gathering sooner.

This reminds me of Nelson. Here is what Grok had to say: Your interpretation of Nelson Muntz's character from "The Simpsons" captures part of what the show often aims to convey through him. Here's a more detailed analysis: Mockery of Naivety: Nelson often mocks others for their perceived naivety or mistakes, which can reflect how society sometimes ridicules those who are less aware or experienced. His "Ha-ha!" is typically directed at the misfortunes or blunders of others, highlighting a sort of schadenfreude or delight in others' failures, which can be seen as a commentary on societal behavior where people sometimes take pleasure in others' shortcomings. Missing the Bigger Picture: Your point about Nelson missing the bigger picture is also insightful. Nelson's character often embodies a lack of depth or understanding beyond the immediate, superficial level. His mockery is usually based on the most apparent or obvious aspects of a situation, without considering the broader context or the reasons behind why someone might have failed or been naive. This can be seen as a critique of superficial judgment or the tendency to focus on the symptom rather than the cause. Complexity of Character: Over the series, "The Simpsons" has fleshed out Nelson's character to show he's not just a one-dimensional bully. Episodes reveal his home life, his own vulnerabilities, and occasionally his capacity for empathy or change. This complexity serves to critique the simplicity of assuming someone's character based on their most visible actions. Nelson's occasional acts of kindness or his own struggles (like his poverty or his relationship with his mother) add layers to his character, suggesting everyone has a "bigger picture" that isn't immediately visible. Social Commentary: Through Nelson, "The Simpsons" often comments on social dynamics, the educational system, and the culture of bullying. His character can be seen as both a product and a critique of the environments that foster such behavior, reflecting how society sometimes perpetuates cycles of ignorance or cruelty. So, while your interpretation is on point, especially about Nelson's mockery representing a societal tendency to call out failures without understanding, the character also serves to delve into more nuanced commentary on human behavior, empathy, and personal growth.

I wish the FAA would close down Starbase it seems launches from Cape Canaveral would be much safer since the entire early arc of the launch is over an unpopulated ocean. Starbase, in contrast, is relatively unsafe. And keep in mind the last Starship crash-up was a "BEST CASE SCENARIO!"

Thoughts on 2024 YR4 - with a 4 yr return cycle, and a relative certainty of its next pass (2028) not being a threat, There is just too big a range of uncertainties to be deeply concerned or dismissive. In my mind, I think we should work like its a fair possibility, and prepare as such. That way the only disappointment is in not getting to play with the shinny new toys we would build to deal with the potential threat. Falls into the "better to have and not need" category. Over 8 years in plenty of time to develop a specialized response to the potential threat without having to break the bank in a rush to respond.

Even if the asteroid is a near miss we (earth) should make an effort to modify its orbit to better understand what is needed. We should send a probe to determine the type of asteroid before hand (like now) and figure out the best way to make this one no threat for at least several hundred orbits.

SpaceX should propose new safety procedures to the FAA. There is no point in the FTS on Starship unless the ship is coming down in or near a populated area. The automated FTS systems should be able to determine if Starship is outside it's flight corridor AND on a ballistic trajectory toward some exclusion zone like Turks and Caicos. Actually, you might still want to blow it up if it is deviating outside the flight path horizontally, but not vertically. I'm suggesting this because it would have been better for Starship to smash into the water, even fully fueled, than to let scatter debris near a populated area. Of course I'm assuming that Starship blew up because of the FTS. That may not have been the case - instead it could have been an over (or under) pressure event that caused a tank to rupture.

My one question about the RTB landing of the Booster: Why are they returning directly too the pad and not next to it, like the same place they pick up the booster (and the Starship) from the Transport that moves it back and forth between the Factory and the Launch pad? Seems to me, if you're not cooking the launching pad (and Quick Disconnect), with the landing burn, the Tower wouldn't need much, or any, refurbishment between launches.

How are starships supposed to take off from the surface of Mars?
@andrasbiro3007
@andrasbiro3007 5 күн бұрын
With it's engines. Or you mean without a tower and a booster? Easily, Mars gravity is 1/3 of Earth's, and escape velocity is a bit less than half. And since the amount of fuel you need in a rocket grows exponentially with speed, half speed means no booster needed. There's also virtually no atmosphere (~1% density), so there's no drag, and you can start your gravity turn much sooner. Both saves tons of fuel.
@evanmorris1178
@evanmorris1178 4 күн бұрын
Exactly. They “only” have to make fuel on Mars, refuel the ship. Test versions of the equipment have been built and performed well enough. It will be a lot of work. But we’ll worth it.

US has set it self back already. By 2030 China will acount for nearly 40% of World STEM graduates, India for a whopping 27%. Even Russia produce twice as much Stem's as US or EU does. SpaceX is one of the last straws available for US to get 100% Co2 free in the next decades by building China like solar space stations to provide clean energy to the world.

So, my question is, why would they install heat tiles here? And only in one little spot? Good question, right? Well, that should give your team something to find out.
