@railgap2 жыл бұрын
That's the negative feedback loop and / or foldback protection circuits in the amp. Any junction (diode, transistor) can act as an RF "detector" (AM), and that modulated signal then gets inverted and fed back into the front of the amp, where it gets amplified along with the desired input signal. It's quite common, especially with so many illegal linear amps in the CB world. (they are the bane of amateur radio operators operating near 10meters)

Considering how many factors go into the development of an advanced civilization on a planet. Im not surprised that we didn’t get lucky this time around.
@photios47792 жыл бұрын
Yup. I'm of the opinion there is merit to the "rare Earth" hypothesis, which refers to the conditions suitable for producing a planet where a sentient species is able to evolve being extraordinarily rare. Considering the truly immense size of this universe, "they" are probably out there somewhere. But the odds that any particular stellar system hosts a planet with an advanced civilization may be somewhere in the range of one in a trillion. We may very well be alone in our galaxy, at least at the present moment in time. At any rate, if our galaxy were full of other advanced civilizations, then one has to ask why our planet hasn't already been colonized in the nearly 4.5 billion years it has existed? The fact our solar system appears to be untouched by any alien presence in all that vast span of time implies that others aren't anywhere nearby.

@@rolandthethompsongunner64 another obvious answer is that the nearest civilization is too far away to have its signal exceed the noise floor of the universe, at least to our current radio receivers. Also we don't really know where (in frequency) to look and when. And who knows, maybe advanced civilizations abandon EM waves after they figure out how to use neutrinos or gravity waves to transmit across interstellar space. Or maybe they use some phenomena that we don't even know exists. So the search space is huge and our "listening" tools are not really up to the task yet.
It would be good if it was possible to determine where the signal really came from. It is just as important to be able to discern what is not as well as what is.

Anton, may I interject for a moment? At some point, we may detect a signal from a non-inhabitable system that _can't_ be explained _in any way_ as a 'natural' signal. What do we do with _that?_ My fear is that given our present 'understanding,' we will discard the signal. _We could be ignoring a signal that could be a probe present in that system sent from a different system._ Basically think of it like this. Earth sends a probe to Proxima Centauri - a system we're _certain_ couldn't have an indigenous sentient civilization. But a civilization from say, Alpha Centauri, is closely watching Proxima Centauri and sees signals from our probe. Rather than wonder if that signal could be a probe from elsewhere, they ignore it because there's no way Proxima Centauri could support an advanced civilization, and fail to realize that they are seeing a signal from another space-faring civilization located somewhere else.

Radio receivers even cause interference to themselves, due to things such as local oscillators being required for heterodyning and the harmonics which those oscillators can cause, along with power supplies, display refresh rates, etc. I've been out of radio engineering for decades, so now I'm curious how modern high tech radios deal with these sorts of self interference for important scientific applications.

If the signal has Doppler shift, then it has to be from an orbiting satellite rather than a geo-synchronous one. It should be possible to estimate the orbital speed from the amount of frequency shift over time. Some satellite that transmits signals 928MHz apart, or possibly some sub-multiple of 928MHz, would be one to generate the signal. It sounds a little like GPS, GLONASS, or some other positioning service that transmits a civilian and military signal at the same time, on two different frequencies. I guess you'd only need a minute amount of IM to be received by a huge radio telescope antenna.

This is a cover-up. The Doppler shift can't be explained away as harmonic interference - it was detected for hours! any satellite would be on the other side of the planet way before that - it would be impossible that the strength of the signal didn't change at all. Modern radio gear doesn't drift like that - especially given a frequency this high? would require very professional equipment. And finally? if it was a human signal? signals are used for a REASON - why isn't it modulated? where's the data it's carrying? are we to believe that sensitive radio-telescopes that can listen to rovers on the surface of mars - couldn't detect any modulation in a signal that was coming from the same planet?
@JohnnyWednesday2 жыл бұрын

@JohnnyWednesday2 жыл бұрын
@Cancer McAids - Those are some very good points, thank you! - but a long period orbiter? to stay within the receiving cone for that long? to my knowledge we don't use orbits further out than geostationary for earth facing systems - they'd orbit slower than the rotation of the planet - not as useful as faster or the same rate. And that shift was significant - I do a lot of amature radio work - one thing I do specifically? is receive images from a couple of different types of weather satellite. Those signals do shift because of Doppler - but they are also very obviously not shifting by a constant rate - as their position above the earth changes in relation to my antenna? they appear to move at different speeds. I see no reason why this hypothetical orbiting object wouldn't also display a clear change in the rate of 'drift' - over such a timescale. Plus the fact that it kept station for many, many hours? How could it possibly be an object that would stay within the lobes for that length of time - suggesting a near geostationary orbit - yet display such a high doppler?
@JohnnyWednesday2 жыл бұрын
@Cancer McAids - "and finally" (sorry) the 'receiving cone' of such a radio telescope? is quite tight! that's a relatively small space for an orbiting object to stay within for that long - over many different nights! if it were a slow orbiter? the following night? if it's higher than geostationary orbit? it can't complete an orbit in 24 hours - ergo it wouldn't be at the same point in the sky. This happened over months too! - we're saying it's so close to geostationary as to stay at the same spot in the sky for weeks - but still fast enough in relation to us to show a clear Doppler? the two - at least to my mind - make no sense together.

according to the paper, they did not actually identify what the source of the signal actually was, so they cannot actually claim it was man-made. There is no reason not to suppose that alien radio technology does not use similar electronic components. this paper is a rush to judgement.

but how does intermodulation explain the doppler shift that we saw in the signal?
@Graeme_Lastname2 жыл бұрын
Would be very interested in knowing what tech uses 982MHz for a clock or a LO. I know just about anything could, but, what actually does? It's not exactly 982 and I'm wondering what that particular offset is about. Doesn't intermodulation require a non linearity to produce the sum and difference frequencies? I've always thought it did. I really do have an interest in this because I'm certain that the surrounding circumstances have never before occurred in my life and I would really like to understand the basic physics of it. Keep well m8. 🖖 👌

Why would an alien civilization use narrow band carriers for communications? We, just within the last century went from narrow band CW telegraphy to ultra-wide band digital communications which, as of now, cover most of the currently available (usable for us) radio spectrum. From a few kilohertz to a few hundred gigahertz there is basically nothing but wide and ultra-wide band radio telecom. Some systems can do such modulations that they appear indistinguishable from white noise.

It may be useful to not only look for signals operating at 'unnatural frequencies', but also analyze them for intelligent encoding. Was any attempt made along this line as well?

I'm still confused. Does intermodulation explain the doppler shift and the direction of the source? Why would satellite interference be tracking the movement of Proxima B across the sky?

I have been a seti@home member since 2000 we all were shut down when the Arecibo telescope failed. We're hoping they can update the telescope with brand new components the basic dish is still usable as the cable holding the receiver failed they can rebuild it with 21st-century technology. With help from anyone willing to support the effort to supercharge this next receiver.

"The basic dish is still usable"? No mate it got smashed by the receiver cabin falling onto it in December 2020. It's a goner, but apparently there are plans to rebuild a radio telescope there.

The study I'm waiting for is the one that definitively identifies an earth-like planet. From a 'where do we go from here?' standpoint, knowing there are in fact places where life like ours can exist is far more important than jumping through hoops looking for so-called intelligence (which even on earth seems to be in short supply).

Statistically speaking if there was a radio using civilisation on Proxima in the same era as our radio using civilisation then the entire Milky Way would need to be populated with billions of alien races and the Drake equation would have a whole bunch of its variables set to 1.0

Unintended radio emissions. Real life story. Broadcast towers have guy cables, at the bottom these are grounded. So multiple steel cables, several hundred meters long, clamped to a copper wire ( welding cable size ) with a ground rod at the end. This is normal. At one site we were broadcasting a few milliwatts on a restricted frequency, and were jamming a police repeater. First assumption was a transmitter problem and lots of effort was made to eliminate that. No change. It was then noticed that the tower installers had looped excess ground wires around in a loop at the base of the guy cables. Dis-similar metals forming diode junctions, a loosely tuned circuit and a very strong excitation field. 5th harmonic of the aural sub carrier. Bolt cutters fixed the problem.

Thanks for a good presentation on exactly what kind of technosignature this signal had. However, you also demonstrated conclusively that a radio telescope on or near Earth will detect millions of technosignatures every time it operates. Earth technology produces huge numbers of technosignatures, but so far we know of no ALIEN technosignatures. You mentioned that this signal was especially interesting because it had almost exactly a round-number frequency in Hertz. At the time of the original publication, at least one prominent scientist mentioned that this was very strong evidence that the signal was of Earthly origin. As a unit, Hertz is an inverse second. A second was originally defined to be a particular round-number fraction of one Earth year at a precise point in geological time. In other words, Hertz has 21st century Earth written all over it.
