Orange Julius used to have nearly 500 locations, including in every mall throughout L.A. and beyond.
In fact, the smoothie was INVENTED right here in L.A. by the founder of Orange Julius

I think there is still one in a corner of Northridge Fashion Center (Dairy Queen/Orange Julius). I remember as a kid you could ask for a raw egg mixed into your Orange Julius for an additional charge. Maybe they lost a few customers to salmonella poisoning.

Orange County, California native here: Mom would buy me one at the mall if I behaved while shopping. One day she tried it and said, “I know what’s in this! I can make it for you at home!” That was the end of my routine treat after mall shopping! 😆

I worked at the Orange Julius in Topanga Plaza, in Canoga Park, CA around 1982. It was a small enclosed kiosk in the middle of the mall that had been there since the 1960s. We only sold drinks...Orange, Strawberry and one other flavor of the month like Pineapple. It was a punk hangout in the early 1980s for the West San Fernando Valley and I worked with Jay Bentley from Bad Religion, and Danny Dorman from Circle One.

That’s the modern recipe…not as good. Originally it was egg whites.

@@jesterforhire Yeah I remember that from the early 70s but it just wasn't cost effective. The pudding powder has the powdered eggs and the vanilla all in one mix.

Mall janitorial staffs came to despise Orange Julius. Invariably someone would drop their OJ, and the alert would go out. If an OJ spill wasn’t contained in time, the sticky mess would get get tracked out over several yards!

I remember as a kid in the early 70's, my Grandparents would take me to the 3rd St Promenade in Santa Monica. If I'm not mistaken there was one very near to the old fountain. The good ol' days!
