I saw them in September of 2022 as well, and most of the obscure songs were favorites of mine...Southern Girls, Downed, Clock Strikes Ten. It was almost like the concert was done just for me. The only thing that bummed me out was that Tom Petersson didn't perform due to his recent heart surgery...he was always my favorite. Instead Robin's son played bass. Gotta keep it in the family I guess. ☺️

My first rock concert was on the night Elvis Presley passed away August 16th 1977. KISS was the headliner at the Cow Palace and the opening act was Cheap Trick. Loved both bands. This band, Cheap Trick, was the one that accompanied me during my high school years, university, and my entire life. I have always admired them, I have always been a fan of them, I have always liked their style, not only their songs, even their logos, the design of their album covers, the guitars that Rick Nelson uses that he himself has designed. It really is an accumulation of many, many beautiful experiences that I have always had when I have listened to it. Even in addition to their records, the pins that Hard Rock Cafe has made about them and the guitar picks that I have managed to pick up at their concerts, on my Christmas tree I have an ornament made by Hallmark that when you press a button you can hear the song "I want you to want me" for at least 45 seconds. I could say much more about them because it is true that every moment I listen to their albums, they give me a feeling of well-being. Apart from that, in the beautiful moments of my youth of my life that I have in my memories by chance or by luck, there's was always a hit of theirs playing on the radio.

Cheap Trick will always have a special place in my heart as they were the first rock band I ever saw live (age 12, opening for Kiss)... I remember Rick bounding onto the stage wearing a checkboard cardigan, checkerboard pants and playing a checkerboard guitar... You couldn't distinguish between the guitar or guitarist!!!... It was a mass of checkerboard topped with a baseball cap BOUNCING across the arena stage in front of torn up speaker cabinets!!! Coolest thing this 12 year old kid ever saw!!... When their contract with Epic Records was up they started looking for a new company. Epic wanted them to return to them and started putting out rumors that the band was sinking at the box office. After some lawsuits the band got free, but the damage had begun to set in. Musician Magazine did a story on CBS and Boston. In it somebody from CBS warns Boston, "Remember what we did to Cheap Trick". Budakon came out as a live album In Japan. Because so many copies were being imported into the USA Epic released it officially over here.

I saw them in concert on their Dream Police tour. I sat up in the nose bleeds. Bored to DEATH. They were perfect. WAAAAY too talented. They did their act studio perfect. It was as if I was listening to the studio albums being played for me. Gee. Thanks. It's not like I couldn't have had that experience at home with my record player. Their stage presence was yawn-inspiring beyond cardboard cut-outs. I left the show believing they are TOO talented for concerts. That, or they put on a mime act and lip-synched to a recording of their music being played. I mark it as the least energetic, biggest let-down most boring performance I have ever witnessed.

Personally I like it better when bands sound like the album. Some bands don't sound like the album because they use too many effects in the studio and the singers voice is over processed. Robin Zander is a great singer and sounds like what I want to hear. Some bands also drag out the variation of the song too much to the point of ruining the original song. For me...I say just play the song like what I'm used to hearing. An example....David Lee Roth sounds horrible live! And can be excruciating watching aged singers struggle to sing like they used to and when they definitely can't hit the notes like they used....they hold the mic to the crowd to finish the part or fill it with some guitar lead that wasn't there before....Not too much worse being around people who can't sing, singing the part!

The Dream Police was released more than a year after it was finished. This was due to sudden success of Live At Budkon taking off as being a successful import. By the time it came out they were probably bored stiff with it already.

Cheap Trick is know as a live band. Everything they perform live is better than recorded. Their albums may not sell well but the concerts do. I seen them pre virus with Zz Top and Foierner. Opening act but played full sets and had the crowd in the palm of their hand. Actually blew ZZ Top away.

@@harvey1954 In Milwaukee...I think it was 1985. Century Hall. A small venue. A local band named Da BoDeans. They tried hard! They worked!! NO BREAKS! Crowd interaction! Such charisma, so much energy! LOVED that performance. And I couldn't give two farts about the music they were playing. I didn't know any of their music, I didn't care. I just needed to support them. GG Allin and Wendy O'Williams and the Plasmatics also performed with extreme passion. Husker Du & Die Kreuzen show was super! Judas Priest at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1982 was clean, amazing, tight and they sweat their asses off. BRAVO! Maybe Cheap Trick really are just too damned talented, they make it look easy.

Pretty weak summary of a band that this narrator doesn't understand or really know. I'm glad new punters attend their gigs ,but these newer attendees to a CT show only know a couple of the songs radio played over the years.... these aren't the true essence of this group.... advice to the narrator..... don't embarrass yourself again by half assing a history summary of bands that you dont' know or understand . . At the very least , get better at telling the bands story ... they deserve so much better.

I thought it was pretty good for fitting it into 10 minutes. He even mentioned they play a lot of deeper cuts in concerts. Seems like he's a fan. Maybe not too comfortable in front of a mic, though.

Budakon was never intended to be widely released. It was a "Thank you" for the Japanese fans. When the record company was checking album sales they were surprised by Cheap Trick album sales surging. Upon investigation it turned out Budakon was being sold as an import, so the record company decided to release it domestically which delayed the release of the next Cheap Trick album, Dream Police.
