Do you take any commissions on products that you advise on?

Hi Wombles, generally we don't. We have a 'fee for service' model, where we aim to give strategic advice, rather than 'product' advice. We don't receive any commission on investment advice, superannuation advice, and in any other areas we deal in... However when it comes to insurance, we give clients the option to 'pay via commission'. Much like mortgage brokers do. It allows young people or low income earners (or some people just feel they don't want to pay for a brokering service) an alternative option. It would be easier for me to just say 'we don't accept commission' my fee is $x - however it means more people would decide not to get advice on insurance. Then the question is - how to do you avoid the unspoken conflict. 'Recommend more insurance so you receive more commission' - we have standard processes, full disclosure, etc... for me education also plays a large part (one of the reasons I started this youtube channel - and I do a lot more education with clients directly). Insurance should be a strategic decision, what do you want to do/ achieve (ie pay off debts, replace income etc) - its a mathematical problem. Then decide on your insurance requirement, then decide who should insure you. Its a long process, and that's why people outsource the problem to us. Insurance shouldn't be sold. Where fear is used and a (I don't want to use the word adviser in this context) - 'insurance salesperson' finds reasons why a person should have $3mil worth of life insurance. Thats where there is a conflict. I personally see commission as... I've said above, 'as an alternative payment method for clients'. I personally don't want them to be a major source, and would be more than happy if the business made $0 from commissions.
