The speech that President Kennedy was giving was to a graduating class at the US Navy Academy at Annapolis. The significance of him saying that they could say with a certain degree of pride "I served in the United States Navy " is that President Kennedy served in the US Navy in WWII as a PT boat commander.

The huff-duff is, as you described, a passive sonar. We still use passive sonar today. Active sonar (where you send out a sound ...a ping...and listen for a return) gives away your position to the enemy.

Actually, I got distracted when he was describing the huff-duff and went off of what he showed, which looked like an old school radar or sonar display and heard him say something about listening. This, in turn, lead me to believe he was talking about a passive sonar. It took me 3 times watching this (the original and 2 reactions) to actually hear the whole thing (life happens). He was actually talking about radio direction finding (which is also used in a wide variety of ways). Sorry.

The 'huff-duff' or High-Frequency Direction Finder was to track radio waves the Germans used to communicate with. While what you described was passive sonar.

FYI, the movie clip with the swords was from the Princess Bride, a classic I HIGHLY recommend if you haven't seen it

Most gangster brawl? This one is certainly up there. But, I lean a bit more toward Taffy 3's stand in the Battle of Samar.

There have been planes, trains, ships, and other machines built for a reason, but somehow were so bad and so ineffective that they never made it past the prototype stage 😂😢

You gotta react to his Berlin Airlift video if you haven't done so already. It is a really good video and should restore your faith in humanity, it shows what can be accomplished when countries work together for a single goal.
