I remember cutting just the sharpest end off of a few of them. What they'll do is seal off the hole in their shell with their spun silk (or whatever it is) so they can continue jumping around as before. Very strange organism.
@maggiep90076 жыл бұрын
That's actually kinda cool. I wonder how they know what direction to jump, because it surely can't be random, or they'd waste more water jumping than just staying still and waiting for dirt to cover them or to be moved by wind.
@mlyniecm5 жыл бұрын
Maggie P they jump opposite the heat source
@DrMackSplackem5 жыл бұрын
@@maggiep9007 I thought so too. My guess is that they would like to jump, and jump at random directions unless they detect heat registering more from one vector than the other, after which they would flick the opposite way. That'd be my strategy. All I know for certain is that they're really, really weird and fascinating animals who live in a hard shell.

Friendly reminder that back here in Mexico we barely celebrate 5 de Mayo. It has nothing to do with our independence. Our actual independence took place on September 16. Cinco de Mayo (Which stands for May 5th in Spanish) was a battle the Mexican unexpectedly won against the French which occurred 52 years after Mexico gained independence from Spain :)

This is actually one of the cruelest toys out there. The company sprays the seed with a lacquer and so when it tries to worm its way out it can’t and it ends up dying. So after you purchase these you end up with a box of dead larvae inside of seeds. It’s a very morbid toy. I think it shouldn’t be allowed to be, it’s just very cruel. Never do you buy these and then they work their way out and turn into moth they just die inside after while. Note: I edited all the spelling errors that I came back and saw that I had made. Nothing was changed from the original post.

I totally forgot about “Mexican jumping beans”. In the late 1960s to almost mid 1970s there were several stores in Spokane, Washington that sold these in little display packs for something like 75 cents (just a guess on the price). It’s been about 45 years or more since I’ve seen them. I just watched an old cartoon from 1945 that jarred my memory about jumping beans.

Actually we Mexicans don’t celebrate 5 de Mayo, only in the state of Puebla, our independence is on September 16th :)

One of my most horrifying childhood memories involves these...got a box of beans from a store near our family's cabin and over a year later I had been keeping them in my underwear drawer at my father's house and after a whole week away I come back, open drawer and it was full of rather large dead moths. I collapsed and screamed "there is no God" I was seven. Fast forward thirty years and I repeat, box of moths on my dresser as we speak, again, all dead.

I laughed at "There is no God'. Just imagine that coming out of a 7 year-old's mouth

Caesar Espinoza well, as I have come to understand it there are moth larvae in the bean and they may or may not hatch, by my estimation it seems as though ideal hatching conditions are after being stored in a dark and climate controlled space, I've never seen them alive though, always scads of corpses? The first time I had about six boxes of them so there were at least a hundred moths and it was like a blanket of leaves and my mind just couldn't compute until I screamed and my dad explained it to me, decades later I saw them by the box for fifty cents a box in Ann Arbor so my curiosity led me to get a couple and one seemed to be a dud and the other hatched well over a year later, I honestly do not understand the period of incubation because each time they were not quick hatches, and the moths grew while trapped, I'm guessing they suffocated?? As far as the comments and the notion they're invasive species, there are many insects that live in many areas without being detrimental. I do not know the full life cycle of these moths in particular but if we don't have the bushes that have the beans there is no way to reproduce successfully so even if a moth reached maturity here it would not be able to continue the cycle of life. Any biologists feel free to chime in!
