Whats inside Weber Can type copper tube filter capacitor guitar amplifier replacement

As you guys know, I am very picky about the replacement filter caps I use in vintage amps + radios. So, I am cutting open a Weber Can type filter capacitor for inspection. Did they use good quality components inside? Yes, I would say so. You can see they spent some time constructing this part. I prefer to use CE Distribution metal can caps. They look much more original on vintage Fender tube amps. D-lab electronics always utilizes quality components. Wow I had always assumed those caps were filled with some kind of caustic chemical, rather than several smaller electrolytic caps ! I learned something today.

Still cheaper to buy the individual capacitors and re-stuff the old one. And of course it looks the most original.

Can choose better quality parts that way too. 55c temp rating is pretty scary on a cap positioned around tubes, I could see it exceeding that temperature with hours of use.

Good heavens... Thanks for doing this for us. There's got to be enough guitarists out there to crowdfund tube/valve, and guitar specific electronic parts' manufacturing into the hands of those who will do the job right! Heck, I am near ready to subscribe to regular replacement tubes if that is all/what it takes to make it right.

I’m not a fan of the 55c temp rating on the CE. I just took some out of a Scott 299 since the cap was exceeding that temp due to the heat from the tubes, and that was without a case on the amp.

I've switched over to custom made Hayseed Hamfest capacitors now after being disappointed in CE Mfg not manufacturing the 3 tab can caps anymore. Custom caps for the same price or a little less then relying on something being in stock with no restock date or just never made again.

The Lelon's are Chinesium. Too bad as the Nichicons are good caps. I'd never seen these Weber cans before, thanks for warning me away from them!

He's not "warning you away" from them. Weber capcan's are top notch, arguably better than what he replaced it with. He replaced it because it didn't "look" original.

From what I've read on various tube amp forums, the CE Distribution cap cans have a high early failure rate. I can't confirm this from experience, as my Fender Vibro Champ from 1979 still has the original can, and is dead quiet.

In a quick search I see that Lelon has a bad rep. Who knows? I just bought some black can caps that were branded, MA. They test well , hoping they're decent

Not a fan of their copper casing . You did good by opening her up to see 50% good caps and 50% poor quality ones. The higher WVDC rating on the CE Manufacturing replacement is also the safer way to go.

No, they are not. For companies producing caps that would make no sense (ie. using one metal can in the other). They make the number of foil rolls needed and put them in a can just like they do with a single roll.

I'd trust the Weber capcan more. They use copper cans that dissipate heat much better than aluminum does.

I spoke with Ted Weber a few times, he offered good advice and good products (mini-mass, speakers, amp kits). I don’t recall purchasing anything from Weber since he passed away, I am curious about the quality of their products now.

I can't believe these large filter caps are just smaller "regular" caps inside a housing. Are all filer caps like this? Like, the older Daly or LCR caps, or the new production JJ caps?

The original cans contain a roll of foil and paper. With newer repros, it's much cheaper to simply use multiple discrete capacitors

Haha, what a joke. So much effort to just put regular recent caps into the additional enclosure. In my tube amp I'm just using regular caps on PCB. It is much cheaper and guess what ... it still sounds the same :D

Isn't that disappointing? when you open such a nice capacitor, there are only normal capacitors inside that could have been easily mounted directly on the pcb. fake

Weber used modern components and put them in an older design space. No big deal, if you like the looks of it. Sleeving a new cap with the outside of an old cap has been done for years, and looks cool.
