Today would have been Joan's 105th Birthday ... October 22 1917 I always thought that Joan and Olivia didn't look alike until I saw them in a Picture together ... Then you see all the similarities ... Although Joan had a long Career in Film and TV ... She was Unbeatable as an Ingenue ... I wish that She had made 100 Movies between 1937 and 1947 ... She was Very good throughout her Entire Career ... but there was something Very Very Special about her during those years ... You were Drawn Right In ... I have Rebecca (1940) tied with two other movies for the Best Movie Ever ... And Suspicion (1941) is in my Top Five Movies ... In these two movies she costarred with two of Hollywood's biggest stars, Laurence Olivier (May 22 1907 - July 11 1989) and Cary Grant (January 18 1904 - November 29 1986) ... Yet both Movies were Hers ... Olivier and Grant were Subordinate Players ... How unusual (!) ... A few of her Biggest Movies are listed below: The Man Who Found Himself (1937) ** Damsel In Distress (1937) * Maid's Night Out (1938) ** The Women (1939) Gunga Din (1939) Rebecca (1940) ** Suspicion (1941) ** The Constant Nymph (1943) * Jane Eyre (1943) ** Ivy (1947) * Born To Be Bad (1950) * Ivanhoe (1952) * The Bigamist (1953) * Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (1956) * Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (1961) The Witches (1966) * * Personal Favorite ** Personal Favorite + So Happy Birthday Joan Fontaine ... You Live Forever (!) ... Great Video (!) ... Thanks for posting (!) ... October 22 2022 (2235 hrs)

I know everyone always asks why there are so many repeats but do remember that this is before the days where everyone on TV had earpieces and could hear each other perfectly. I imagine the studio was a pretty loud one what with the panelists, crew and a live audience.

They didn't tell the audience she was born in Japan. During WWII her sister made it clear she was 'American' actress Olivia De Haviland even though she was also a British subject. Really don't know why, did she think because she was born in Tokyo made her an enemy? The De Havilland aircraft plant in Toronto was pushing out the Lancaster bomber. Both actresses had been invited on several occasions to come up and christen new aircraft. Joan was a license pilot.

It's no secret Joan Fontaine & her sister, Olivia DeHavilland, had been estranged for years. But DeHavilland was one of the few, close female friends of the late Bette Davis, who, as many know, had her own feud with a "Joan" going on for years--her co-star in "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?," Joan Crawford (though the feud was overblown, which Davis enhanced over the years for entertainment purposes).

I've never seen Joan more attractive more appealing or more unaffected. She was great at portraying shy, little brown wrens who wouldn' say boo to a goose, AND brittle, mannered, super-sophisticated, crafty, manipulative Bee-EyeTea-Cee-Aitche -- but not much in between those two extremes. I hope this delightful appearance is what she was truly like in real life, but one can never be sure. I've always been troubled by the rift between Joan and her sister Olivia de Havilland, and wonder what could have caused it? I believe Olivia was capable of a much broader range of characterization. Could that have been it?
@JamesVaughan8 жыл бұрын
+Hyramess Hiram's I agree with you wholeheartedly that Olivia was the better actress. Far more depth and range in my opinion. Joan tended to play the same role in so many films - the shy, submissive naif and easily victimized sort (Rebecca, Suspicion, Jane Eyre, Letter from an Unknown Woman), whereas Olivia could play characters as diverse as Melanie in GWTW and the young schizophrenic in The Snake Pit. I think a lot of the sisters' rivalry may have been encouraged by their mother who may have (wittingly or not) played the two off against each other, leading to a lot of mutual jealousy and competition for their mother's approval (the classic sibling rivalry). Sad that they never reconciled.
@jmccracken19637 жыл бұрын
Well, Joan Fontaine also played some different sorts of roles in the movies, too - such as "Kiss The Blood Off My Hands," "September Affair," "Decameron Nights," "Island In The Sun," "A Certain Smile," "Ivanhoe," "Flight To Tangier," "Darling, How Could You!", "Born To Be Bad," "Until They Sail," "Tender Is The Night" - and, of course, the movie which was then running on Broadway, "The Bigamist," an unsuccessful attempt to do with drama what "The Captain's Paradise" doesn't do with droll British comedy.

My brother has been a waiter for many years at a restaurant in the Carmel, CA. area and Joan Fontaine used to be a frequent dinner guest at the place as well as a few other celebrities and my brother said Joan Fontaine was the nicest of them all...Very gracious, generous, good natured and kind and I know she was an animal lover and advocate.. she had a separate limo just for her dogs.. from things I've read/heard of the two sisters was that Joan Fontaine was the nicer one of the two...
