I took notes. Qualifiers could function as adjective attributives . A little blue hut... probably? I understand the usage , anyway. Adjective attributives modify the noun hut in my example . 💖

Thank you for making this video! It helps a lot!:) However, I would like to ask a question about using other with uncountable nouns in 2:12, you’ve mentioned that people is uncountable but isn’t it countable? As we can say there are three people in the room. Thanks again!
@oxfordenglishnow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Irene, you are right. People can be a regular countable noun or is a plural noun. My mistake. Sorry! 😊

Great lesson, thanks! But what about using 'the other' before a number and a plural noun instead of 'another' in the sentence - I am going to spend the other three days working on my project. If I understand correctly this sentence is also valid but in this case we are referring to 'the remaining days'. Am I right?
@oxfordenglishnow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Volodymyr, yes this is also valid and yes it is referring to a specific 3 days, which could be remaining or just specified. Hope that helps.

Question: Some of my friends like basketball, and "the" others like baseball. (A) I have 50 friends. 20 of them like basketball, and 30 of them like baseball. "the" indicates the remaining. (B) "the" indicates these friends are specific, not random ones. Maybe I have only 3 friends who like baseball. Which is right? A or B? Thank you!
@oxfordenglishnow3 жыл бұрын
I would say from your sentence, "the others" is the remaining friends, so A.

Great video for learners! But I just wanted to ask : since when is “people” an UNcountable noun?😖😖😖 ( 2:18 of the video ) We use a plural verb with PEOPLE ( or do we say “people IS” given it’s uncountable ???😅😅😅, never said or heard being said so when referring to a group of persons) and we also have a singular form of it: a person. Many people, right ? Or MUCH PEOPLE ?? ... How can it then be UNCOUNTABLE??? Is it just a slip of the tongue ( which well can happen , to err is human) or have I missed a recent meeting? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Thank you for your kind response !
@oxfordenglishnow4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you are right. The noun people has both a PLURAL sense and a SINGULAR sense. In the PLURAL sense, people is used as the plural of person very frequently. It is a plural count noun and takes a plural verb. It never has an -s ending; it is already plural. In contrast, the SINGULAR sense of people is used to refer to ALL the men, women, and children of a particular tribe, nation, country or ethnic group, speaking of them as a UNIT, and so the phrase a great people is indeed singular. It is a singular count noun. You can say: They are a great people. Sorry, slip of the tongue....
@olgaromanovych93364 жыл бұрын
@@oxfordenglishnow HI! Thank you for your answer! Being a teacher myself, I do know slips of the tongue can sometimes happen :) Well, NOBODY is immune to that, are they ? We should all be understanding and help each other ! Thank you for your effort and great videos!

I doubt that people is really uncountable. We say few people can keep the secret. So few is followed by countable plural noun.
@oxfordenglishnow Жыл бұрын
Hi, you are right it is not an uncountable noun but can be a plural noun as in the sentence: Many people never do any exercise. or as a countable noun as in : The French are known as a food-loving people. I hope that helps!

can you explain when we use others and the others, because in your video only explain others.thanks you
@oxfordenglishnow4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tri, the others means one of two things: either the remaining ones (of a group). For example: "take these and leave the others" or "the others" is used to refer to the rest of the people or things in a group, when you are talking about particular people or things. For example: I shall wait until the others come back. or Dan is on his way here, with the others. or This is the only book of his worth reading. The others are rubbish. Hope this helps. 😀

I have a question. Namely, can I use THE OTHER ONE as a second of two things/people/opposite to the set of 2? I mean - I have two sons. First is a lawyer, the other one is a soldier.

Hi Vinayak, For your sentence: if my mom has 6 sets of plates and i could find only 5 plates and i was unable to find the last one . Then how can i tell her? mom i could not find six plates. I was only able to find 5. Or I could not find the sixth plate. I don't think "one" would work here. Hope that helps!
