@eileenrobbins8430Ай бұрын
Lester, tomatoes need sun to grow and water. They grew best the year Jami planted together on the outside edge grouped together. Closest to the yard and garage. That row is good because it won't burn them up so fast. Fertilize the dirt a month in advance so not to burn the roots. The rain washed away so much but they just didn't get enough sun.we grow ours in big pots to avoid soil washing away in Washington State. I get tons of tomatoes. You could try that too. Never too late. Put them in a place where they get sun but shade too from your blistering heat 😅. You can also grow them in topsy turvy containers that hang !
@dorothycomerford8732Ай бұрын
Also i think there is too much leaf growth - if that was thinned out to let the sun in maybe the tomatoes would have done better...

Tomatoes like heat & sunshine. They need to get consistent water but hate soggy feet. So I agree with Jami... it's likely a combination of factors. They are a bit too overcrowded by the looks of it as well, which contributes to disease, bugs & lack of airflow & sunlight. My husband is also not keen on gardening. We each have different strengths & passions. Jami's enthusiasm for gardening is heart warming & inspirational ❤

Lester and Jami, there _should_ be a child safety setting on your stove you can press to lock the oven so Mr Hank can't turn it on or mess with any other settings. When you want to cook, it's usually a two button sequence to unlock your stove again. Check your manual or, if you no longer have the paper manual, you can look up the manual online if you have the brand and product number.

I also trim up any leaves that show signs of stress. The bugs are another story! BT! BT! BT! in between the rain. Jamie's garden looks wonderful. She should be proud! Wouldn't doubt your biggest problem was the rain washing the pollen away before the bees could collect and transfer it. No pollen = no fruits. About 1/2 of those tomatoe branches should be removed for air flow, and to allow enough sun down to the leaves. If you want to pack them tight, go no closer than 8" when in a line or 12" staggered, double the distance if you don't plan on trimming. Also install a horizontal board about 8 feet above and run strings from the roots of the tomatoe to the beam. Use vegitable clips (plastic rings that circle the plant stem and grips the string) for the first foot (2 or 3 to anchor the line) and then just wrap the stems around the string as they grow (slow spiral, maybe 12-18" per wrap). Remove the secondary stems (additional stems from the same root ball). Thanks to the support strings less energy will be needed to grow thicker stems, thus more goes to the fruit. If you can avoid pesticides as much as possible, pleqase do. Over use of pesticides just kill the good bugs and make the bad ones more tolerant of the pesticides, same as over use of medicated soaps in relation to common viral and bacterial infections. Think about what your parent's windshield looked like after a long drive in the summer vs what yours does now, almost no bug splatters when comparing. Instead look into companion plants, these are plants that will either draw in the beneficial insets (bees and preditors), chase bad bugs from the area or sacrifice themselves as the problematic bugs prefer them over your regular plants. A great plant to draw in pollinators and chase bad bugs are Marigolds, especially the tall African ones. Hubbard squash is great at distracting the squash bugs and tomatoe caterpillars from your squashes, potatoes and tomatoes, also any Hubbards that do survive are good eats steamed with a little butter and nutmeg or cajon seasoning.
@amyrobles4780Ай бұрын
Thise tomatoes might could use some thining out and take off some of the larger leafs so the sun focuses more in the fruit instead of supplying nutrients they are stuggling to get on leafs as well. Hopefully, as the soil starts to dry some you can get some nice tomatoes.
@milothetruckcat28 күн бұрын
too much rain not enough warm days. over crowding can definitely effect them, the plants need air circulation to prevent diseases. tomatoes are also are heavy feeders and need to be rotated to different areas every year because they use up all the nutrients, and prevent pests and diseases in the soil. there are guides on line to help you know what to plant after them to replace the nutrients. I definitely have experience with this. I have had several bad years of tomatoes before I figured it out. last year I planted them way too early and stunted them because it was not warm enough yet, I hope this helps. I am a long distance gardener because I drive a trucking only am able to attend them every other week, but I make it work most of the time,
