My Gramma was born in Scotland and came with family to Canada in 1912. Your recipe evoked so many fond memories of childhood Christmases and watching actually brought tears to my eyes. Should have known it but did not realize this treat to be of Scottish origin. We just knew that they were a big part of our holiday tradition at my Grandparent's house. When we got to their house for dinner on Christmas Day, we would make a bee-line to the treat tray to be sure we would not miss out. Now that I have your recipe, I will give it a try and re-introduce this tradition to my home. I could almost taste them when you showed the finished product. Thank you so much for this video

My father played golf three times a week with Johnny Lees, whose Lees’, “Macaroon Bars for picaninnies and grandpapas”, were famous in Scotland, probably still are! His was the first Rolls Royce, I ever had the excitement in which to be driven. Obviously not PC now, but we were completely ignorant of this type of thing in working class Scotland in the fifties. JL also made Coconut Ice, Tablet and Snowballs in their Whifflet, Coatbridge factory.

My son brought a souvenir box of these macaroons back from a recent Scottish holiday. As they say, these sweets are to die for and brings back many happy Scottish childhood memories. As for the recipe - I'm really surprised that there is potato in the fondant and I also thought, wrongly, that there was coconut mixed in with the fondant. Your home island looks idyllic.

Loved seeing this recipe. Every Christmas when I was a child, my Mom would make a candy she called Teddy Bears. They were basically made of leftover mashed potato and coconut with icing sugar. She would shape it into little logs about 2 to 3 inches long. That was the body of the Teddy Bear. She would then dip one end into melted dark chocolate. That was the head. I loved these treats each year. I still have her recipe, but haven't made then because my hubby is allergic to coconut. I might just have to make some just for me this year. Thanks for bringing back these happy memories. Take care, and keep well.

Hi Cheryl, just found you! Loved listening to your voice. You’re making me homesick, I used to love having a Lees macaroon bar back home. We can get them here (Oz) but they are dead expensive and the use by date is usually close to expiry so they’re not too fresh. Now I can make my own. I’m away now to binge watch your other recipes. You can take the girl out of Scotland, but you can’t take Scotland out of the girl! Thanks very much.

I'm from Maine, USA, the region called New England (just west of Nova Scotia or New Scotland). We make a coconut candy with potato, coconut & chocolate, called Needham's. Our recipe doesn't cover the outside with coconut, but that's about it. Really good and sweet, a Christmas time treat.

For these to last more than a few minutes after making, I’d have to make them in secret and hide them. My kids would *love* these. My youngest son loves mash and I often have leftover, so I know what I am going to do with it. I am in Australia and chocolate treats are better in the coming cooler weather. Thanks Cheryl!

I *did* know there was spuds in these but I had no idea they were so easy to make. Would a common or garden hand-beater be strong enough Cheryl? One thing I thought of; would putting the coconut in a deep(ish) small bowl for coating them maybe save on some coconut? There seems to be an awful lot wasted. Just a thought.😁 Thanks for the recipe, Dougie.

Oh, you have done it again so delicious but simple! I have a friend who grew up in Bears den in Glasgow, her father would travel during his work times and he would go to a bakery called light buddies. Sometimes if he came back early in the mornings he would bring her something called a cream ring, wondering if you ever heard of it she can’t find any recipe like it every other thing she’s ever found like it it’s not like the Scottish cream ring😔 wondering if you may have something up your sleeve like that?

Can't get them where I live so I'll just have to buy a food mixer so that I can try your lovely recipe.
@jddo32984 жыл бұрын
I think I may have had these as a child ( back in the dark ages, lol), but seriously one cannot go wrong with coconut, sugar and chocolate! Adding tatties only improves the combination (but hold the butter/pepper or gravy , tho). Think I may give these a go, but as its only me I would probably halve the recipe. Unless they store well, then that may change things, you know... full recipe- smaller pieces. HaHa. Do they store well,; if so how and where? Also, should they be wrapped in perhaps parchment paper or the like. As for coconut I prefer the desiccated coconut you've used over the shredded sweetened flaked variety. Anyway, have a relaxing Sunday and a Fantastic week ahead. *LK* And just a few words to think on... Happy times and bygone days are never lost... In truth, they grow more wonderful within the heart that keeps them. These are not my words originally but a saying I read decades ago and have reflected on many a time in my life since. Hope it helps some.

I am a big fan of ScotIand, it's people, culture and food. I absolutely loved the time I spent there participating in the World Bagpipe Championships a few years back. I don't know if you are aware of this, but closed caption does not work well with this channel and gives a truly comical take on your broadcast. Your Scottish accent is being misinterpreted and some of the attempts at translating are just comical because of your accent. No malace is intended here, just an observation. Can't wait to try these macaroons!
