Two things, 1. For a drop like that, you typically want to have a smoke indicator. 2. You do a recess in the foam for any equipment to fit in and have optimal protection.

Pelican cases are no joke. We used them in the military, and they take a beating. They get thrown around, dropped, etc. I have one filled with tools and it too has been dropped and tossed around and it still works just fine. I'd totally rock one of those cases. P.S. yes, you're right. The foam is supposed to be pulled out around the laptop.

This is what happens when you do not read the user manual and go off the reservations. Pelican cases work great and there is a reason why the foam come in such a way. Been using them for many, many, many years and the equipment we store in them have always been protected. Solid product. (No pun intended)

We use those cases at work, they are a lifesaver for Oil & Gas use in the field. Our field laptops are mailed in these cases to remote locations and get there flawlessly. You did use the case wrong, You are supposed to cut out the laptops and charger areas in the foam and put the laptop down in there. We have some laptops that are 6 years old that look new because of these cases.

When you have a case like that your supposed to cut out the shape of the laptop in the bottom foam about the thickness of the actual laptop to set it in there so it'll stay put, lots of people do that I have a case similar to that I can do underwater exploration with my camera case and I have to cut out an insert in the bottom of that foam that's why your laptop did not stay put and it went backwards and bent

When I was in a federal law enforcement agency we used pelican cases for everything. My only suggestion is if you cut the foam to fit the laptop it would have saved the laptop physically because it would have less chance of moving around and would not slide around. Great test though. For laptops, this case designs custom cutouts for laptops. You didn’t use the case properly for the test even, so this test was never a proper test. It’s due to your error that the laptop was destroyed. The case worked fine, but you allowed the laptop to slide around, which it wouldn’t do normally if you had secured the laptop properly.

Should have gone back up and dropped it without the case, would show you the difference. And like prev stated in the comments if you plucked the foam and set it in properly you would have avoided it sliding between the layers and hitting the hinge which was the cause of your damage.

The pelican cases are the type that the military uses to transfer sensitive equipment and are made to incredibly high standers the dam is meant to absorb shock while the plastic keeps it water tight and hard to break into.
