I agree with the walk being eliminated.... and btw, same goes for the silly exit when the guests could easily walk BEHIND the curtain rather than behind Mr Daly as he pretends they HAVE ACTUALLY GONE yet still on stage . If they don't have room behind their curtain....itvmust be the smallest stage area imaginary!!!

For those who have not seen the earliest shows: The walk in front of the panel (which included greetings) during this time, looks like a fashion show promenade compared with the show-biz actions the panel used to require of the contestants. This included such things as contestants opening their coats, showing a close-up view of their hands, and even standing on one foot!

Pat Finch was then appearing in the Broadway musical 'Fanny". Also in the cast of that show was a child performer named Gary Wright, who my generation knows as the writer and singer of the immensely popular 1970's hit, "Dream Weaver".

A show of anniversaries with the 5th anniversary of WML and a mention of the 75th anniversary of the Salvation Army. It also happened to be my mom's 40th birthday, although I was still a bit too young to remember that. I don't know if my family had their first television set by this time (I know they had it by late summer in 1956), but if they did, my mom would have been thrilled to see Sam Levinson appear on her birthday. One note of clarification about the Salvation Army's anniversary: in 2015, The Salvation Army celebrated its 150th anniversary. For those of you facile in arithmetic, you may have noted that the numbers don't add up. While the Army officially began in London in 1865, it did not officially begin in other countries (Australia, Ireland and the United States were the first three) with the arrival of Salvation Army officers there in 1880. However, they found adherents to the Salvation Army's mission already in those countries doing the work unofficially when they arrived and gladly joined forces with them. A lot of people in the U.S. also do not know that the Salvation Army eventually became a church as well as an evangelistic movement and mission. One of their churches is where I currently attend church.

"Fanny" opened on Nov. 5, 1954 at the Majestic Theatre. It had 888 performances and closed on 12/16/56 (the final two weeks at the Belasco Theatre). The original cast included in the three lead roles, Ezio Pinza as Cesar (and who will be part of the WML panel 2 weeks after this show aired), Walter Slezak as Panisse and Florence Henderson as Fanny. Pat Finch is listed as a maid in the original cast, something that Broadway World online missed. And a trivia footnote: as one of the Acolyte's in the performance, the last billed part went to an 11 year old child actor from Cresskill, New Jersey by the name of Gary Wright. Gary would eventually become a keyboardist and early user of the synthesizer. He played background keyboards for George Harrison for over 30 years as well as many other well-known popular musical stars, helped form the band Spooky Tooth in London and is best known for his solo megahits "Dream Weaver" and "Love is Alive" in 1976. He still performs, released his most recent album in 2010 and his autobiography in 2014, and notes that "Dream Weaver" is a much deeper spiritual song than it was made to seem when it was used in "Wayne's World".

Did it not occur to the producers to have giant clocks posted not just for Daley to see and manage time, but how helpful it would be for the panelists so they knew to stop dawdling and get a move on? That might've made such a difference in the pace and given the contestants the much earned time they actually deserved.

I have always wondered why a bench was not supplied when Greer were more than one guest. When a conference was required, I also couldn’t understand why a partition wasn’t placed- better than hands I suppose. Nevertheless, it was and still is one of the most entertaining shows of all times. Truly miss those times before I was born and very young. Such class, respect, decorum! What has happened to the world of today? Please bring this show back in its natural and true form!

Pat (Patricia) Finch has, of course, a very great importance in the history of "What's My Line?", as she was the very first contestant, appears here on the 5th Anniversary Show, and also appeared on the very last program in its original version (1950-1967). But I'm still trying to find out if she is among "The Land of the Living"! I also think it's a shame that was not also featured in the 1975 Retrospective--which is also about the last time we ever see anything in which John Daly had an active part.

I've noticed that the men in this period/era all had the same hairline. How unusual is that? Like they were really totally bald on top but had this 4 inches of "hair" in the middle of their head that swept backwards over the top of their head. Imagine them in the shower it must be the one piece of "hair" that when shampoo'd falls down to their chin? I always wondered if the style was for balding men to have the same toupe of partial hair? Does anyone know?

Lily Bean -- I'm a caregiver for an elderly woman. I take her and her equally elderly friend to their hair salon every week for "a wash and a set," scheduled perm and/or color. Every woman who leaves that salon has the same hairstyle! When I'm about town and I see that particular hairdo, I bet the woman gets her hair done at that particular salon. 😄 Perhaps men have the same desire for their hairlines/combing habits.

It's fascinating to me to see the hairstyle trends, esp. for the men, from decades gone by. During this particular period of the early-mid 1950s, I've noticed that on these WML shows most of the men seem to part their hair on the left -- John, Fred, everyone. Even the devastatingly handsome Louis Jourdan (on the next episode as a panelist) who has a full head of hair and who has no need for a combover or anything like that, parts his hair on the left side.

According to BroadwayWorld.com, Patricia Finch was in 6 productions on Broadway. "Fanny" was her first. 1955 Think of how that time period was the run up to the civil rights movement and Rosa Parks. Pearl Bailey appears here as a celebrity but also an equal to the white panelists. This is amazing.

It's progressive, but TBH the civil rights movement had actually been going on since the late 40s. It's not talked about much today, but an astonishing amount of progress had been made: The military as well as pro baseball and football were integrated, multiple states and localities particularly in the western US passed laws aimed at banning public accommodation or employment discrimination, while Washington DC was largely desegregated by the mid 50s IIRC thanks to pressure and various orders from President Eisenhower. Even more remarkably, some southern colleges like the University of Arkansas, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Virginia Tech began integration BEFORE Brown v. Board of Education was even decided in 1954 (VT did it without even being forced to by a court, much to the fury of segregationists). There was still a lot of work to be done, but America in the 1950s was (FINALLY) getting on the right path toward true racial equality.

I was a little surprised at the stated age of The Salvation Army, so I did a little research. From what I have found, The Salvation Army was first formed in London in 1865. This episode was in 1955. I am not the best at math, but to me that would make The Salvation Army, 90 years old. Am i missing something?

Lois Simmons explained that in a post further up this page. The SA started in London in 1865 but didn't begin operations in the US until 1880. The 75th anniversary refers to the US beginnings of the organization.

While not as bad as Hal Block with the female evangelist some years earlier, the male panelists ogling of the final challenger was quite uncomfortable to watch. Of course John Daly knew better than to join in the remarks. While men may think it is complimentary to note a woman's beauty, once it becomes in any way suggestive, it crosses the line to crass or worse. If men would stop and think: would I want some guy saying something like that to my mother, my sister or my wife?

I wondered the same thing. I am old enough to remember Miss Bailey in the later part of her career and I don't recall any special mention of her use of her hands during her performances. And searching online turned up nothing. She was known for her talent as a singer and an actress, as well as her especially sweet and down to earth personality. But her use of hands? Perhaps it only applied to the play she was in at the time, "House of Flowers".

based on what Levenson said about her hands, i am going to guess some people liked the way she used her hands while performing, but not everybody, including Pearl, knew about it. unlike today where a reviewer could mention her hands and everybody in the world would read it a minute later, in 1955, it could take a few months for everyone to read the review.

I must say that I have never found Fred Allen (who had a face made for radio) to be the slightest bit humorous or even interesting. I understand he was a fine gentleman. But I am astonished that he could make a living based on his supposed wit.

No disputing tastes. But humor was different back then, and Fred Allen made his name on radio - he had, as they say, a face for radio. I find him quite funny, though it took a while to warm to him. Steve Allen's comedy has survived better.

On his radio show he was performing scripts that he had written and rehearsed, and that made his reputation. He's not as much a natural at live television, but I still enjoy much of his quick repartee; droll wit appeals to me.
