Not many people now a days know Imogene Coco - which I loved her with Shows of Shows with the greats of Sid Caesar and others that i can't remember. As a child I remember laughing so hard I tired to stop but my sides would hurt. These people made show comedy show great!

I so enjoy this show. I have an extensive collection of old black and white shows, movies and series. Many rare out of print. When I do turn on my television, I watch news and the channels that play old movies and wonderful old westerns! I always have felt I was born in the wrong era.

IIRC, I believe that my late parents were able to see him performing in person in Portland, OR when they were early into their marriage, during the mid-late '60s. As Americans of Nordic heritage (Finnish), there was possibly another level of appeal for "The Great Dane". Growing up in the 70s/80s, we used to watch his appearances on television regularly, including those on PBS.

Don't forget she was in the Admiral Broadway Revue too. That show was *so* successful... it got canceled. It was sponsored by a TV manufacturer who sold out ALL of their product because of the success of Imogene & Sid on the Revue. So the sponsor pulled out and the show had to be canceled due to lack of funding. Their comedic genius literally pushed America into the TV era!

His own shows do the same thing to me--come to a grinding halt. I always want him to play the #@%* music and shut up. I do love him in spite of this. I think his comedy may consist of frustrating his audience to the point of plotting his demise, but not quite to the point of executing the plan.

His humour appealed to the audiences of the time and times have changed. When more talented comedians begun appearing on TV his act changed and he basically disappeared from the air. No offense to people who find him funny but history will not remember his as one of the greats, his talent and style simply does not warrant it.

"Your Show of Shows" had ended, and she was not invited to be in "Caesar's Hour" the female comic role going to Nanette Fabray.

The studio had forced The Show of Shows to end, sending their producer to a new sitcom, split up the writers, gave Sid his own hour long show, and Imogene her own show. They claimed to be making three successes out of the one. Unfortunately 2/3 new ones failed within (2?) years and even Caesar started to crack under the grueling time schedule they had forced on his contract. In other words, the studio 'business' hacks ruined the magic of The Show of Shows for absolutely no reason. It could have kept rolling on, profitably, in the same way Jackie Gleason did with the Honeymooners or Lucille Ball did with Lucy. Remember, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, original writers on The Show of Shows didn't find their own success until the 1960s because they got such garbage contracts after The Show of Shows. If anything, the studio executives were likely intimidated by the original team's success. It's a pity; that magic, much of which came from vaudeville was never replicated.

Imogene and Sid in the “At the Movies” bit is one of the funniest skits ever conceived. Its success depends entirely on the two comedians, however. I think Carl Reiner was also in it as the boyfriend.

Have you seen them in "Le Grande Amour" skit? It's a parody of French dramatic films, also featuring Carl Reiner as the boyfriend. Brilliantly crafted. Imogene's physical comedy shines there, and you get the sort of 'sensitive' sweet side of the men. It's very well done.

Good question. I just watched Bill Cullen host the first "The Price is Right" show. He was allowed to sit when he hosted that show. It was completely different than "The Price is Right" is now.

You may notice that he steadied himself on the back of the chair. You may have also noticed that they went to commercial after the sign in to conceal his awkward gait across the stage.

@@CottonO I know about Bill Cullen's polio. He had it since he was a child. He really wanted to be an athlete, but he knew that he couldn't do that because of the polio and that's why he chose to be a game show host. I actually saw him shoot pool on the game show "The Price is Right." It was very difficult for him, but he was bound and determined to do it and he did it! He was the host of the game show "Three of a Kind," and he had to stand for that show, but he did end up sitting on a very high chair. The view of the chair was hidden from the audience, but it was obvious that he was sitting because he was shorter towards the end of the show than he was at the beginning of the show. He didn't like having the public watch him walk because he didn't want that kind of attention. I know exactly how he felt because when I was a teenager I had to wear a body brace because I had scoliosis. The part of my brace that covered my neck showed and a lot of people stared at me, including my teachers and my fellow students. I hated that kind of attention. I wanted to be treated normally so badly, but that didn't happen. I can really empathize with Bill Cullen when he didn't want people to watch him walk because they would stare at him unintentionally. I agree with you about him. I really liked watching Bill Cullen. He was fun to watch! He was smart, he had a good sense of humor, he was a charming host and panelist, and he was handsome when he was young.

The word "octopus" literally means "eight feet". They are used for locomotion, so they are quite validly referred to as legs. They are also used for grabbing and holding and manipulation, so they can also be validly referred to as arms.

I think Victor Borge is wonderful but just as you wouldn't sprinkle chocolate flakes on top of a Sunday roast he is totally the wrong act for the show. It surely requires wit rather than slapstick. I see Peter Ustinov appears on the panel for a later episode. That's the type of intelligence combined with humour and performance savvy you need. You don't book Stan Laurel or Stanley Unwin for this sort of thing!

The panel wants to have it both ways: first Arlene insists that John should count all animal limbs as "legs" (and not split hairs), but at the end, when they fail to guess, they suddenly insist on the opposite: an octopus has "arms" not "legs". You either count all animal limbs as legs, or you don't.

23:23 shows an aircraft that didn't exist in 1956. Just curious as to when this was broadcast (presumably in monochrome along with the advertisements). I can't think of a twin engined jet aircraft like that until the F-17 which first took flight in 1974. Would anyone be able to illuminate when this was rebroadcast and recorded?

It looks like a snippet of the film featuring jet aircraft along with a recitation of the poem 'High Flight' that many TV stations would show at sign-off. This portion of the show does not have the GameShow network watermark, so it may have been recorded from air at some point. I do not know why it would run before the closing credits, though. Maybe a USAF recruiting advertisement?

Ugh, don't find him funny at all. He's as silly as a 3rd grade school girl. Tried to watch him once and I'm thinking he was seated at a piano. He had a laugh track going at full blast. He was so silly that I gave up after about three minutes.

@@jerrylee8261 Believe it or not, its true which is why his shows sold out whenever announced and we were lucky to get tickets. As was mentioned on WML, when he announced a one man show on Broadway his advances were larger than R&H musicals, unmatched for a one man show. A sense of humor is a very individual thing but I am afraid in this instance you're vastly outnumbered.

I'm not a Victor Borge fan, but to be fair, you don't hire a comedian and then complain when he tries to be funny. The show must have expected him to 'stall' and tell jokes, just like Wally Cox, Groucho and others.

it's not the fact that he told jokes and was....'funny.' he just didn't know when to stop. a little goes a long way, and too much goes from the humorous to the obnoxious fast. to me, funny men like steve allen and mort sahl got it right; groucho and jerry lewis got it all wrong.

The only one who didn't really get it as a panelist was Wally Cox but he comes across uncannily like Andy Kaufman who must have seen Wally at some point.

Borge reminds me of these guys in high school who could say the stupidest and unfunniest thing yet for some reason, it worked and all the girls were giggling at their jokes, I always found that unfair lol. Nothing against Borge, sometimes he's genuinely funny but some others, he just tries too much and yes, it's irritating, I remember the one where a short lady came and Steve Allen stood up and it was funny, then Borge did the exact same thing and I hated it, he wasn't even tall to begin with and the joke didn't need to be repeated.

In my not-so-humble opinion, Wally Cox was, by far, the most irritating guest panellist, but Victor Borge runs a close second. And, as has been pointed out, both were very funny in the right situation, but not here - neither of them had a clue as to what they were doing, and simply wasted time trying for laughs. That being said, I can't recall any other guest panellists who were irritating. Groucho wasted a certain amount of time, but he was charming & genuinely funny.

I agree. Victor Borge did nothing but waste time as a panelist in an attempt to be funny and he wasn't particularly funny for all of the time he spent getting nowhere. Too bad, because on the stage with a piano he was nothing short of hilarious. I note that Groucho Marx was another lousy panelist, but his efforts at humor were hystercally funny on WML, even if he destroyed the show in the process.

Why do the challengers sometimes just sit silently and stare at the panel after a question is put to them? I understand that they often had a hard time hearing the questions put by the panel, but like the Octopus man here he just stares blankly at them even after John reiterates the question.Are they trying to run out the clock to win more money?
