@WhatsMyLine10 жыл бұрын
James Vaughan I never thought about it before, but I think I can see it a bit. Resemblances are one those eye-of-the-bheloder things. One person looks at two celebrities and can't see how anyone could fail to see the striking resemblance, and then another won't see it at all. But they both aged so gracefully (or in Mirren's case, is still aging so gracefully), and have that seemingly effortless elegance and class about them, beyond any physical resemblance.

Penny Pitou is still alive at 82 y.o. Once again, Arlene seems to know the guest's "line' without a supporting series of questions that logically led her to the 'line'. Henry Fonda answers "no" to Gig Young's question, "Are you primarily a motion picture star"? By 1961, Fonda had made 49 films, including classics like, My Darling Clementine, Mr Roberts, 12 Angry Men, Jesse James, Young Mr Lincoln, Warlock, The Grapes of Wrath, The Ox-Bow Incident, Fort Apache etc.
@MajorDenisBloodnok3 жыл бұрын
You're right. Henry Fonda's real passion was theater not movies, I think he considered himself firstly as a stage actor. From 1948 to 1955, he only did stage acting with the huge success of the play Mister Roberts, then the successes of Point of no return, Two for the seesaw... From 1955 to 1961, he only acted in few movies, and as far as I know, none of them were huge success, except maybe for the adaptation of Mister Roberts. He made very good movies like The Tin Star, Warlock (one of my favorites) and of course 12 angry men but they became "classics" later.
@Baskerville223 жыл бұрын
@@MajorDenisBloodnok Yes, I like Warlock, and regard it as being almost a classic Western. I've read the Oakley Hall novel and the film does it justice. I say that it's close to being a classic because I feel it loses its way after Blaisedell kills Morgan. The early scene in the French Palace where the McQuown bunch try to intimidate Blaisedell is one I replay often.
@MajorDenisBloodnok3 жыл бұрын
@@Baskerville22 Yes, I like how they handled the situation in the saloon. DeForest Kelley is very good as the smart but not so courageous bad guy... But for me, it is when Clay Blaisdell kills Morgan and how he reacts to the death of his friend (great piece of acting by Henry Fonda!) that makes of Warlock a great movie. Warlock is not a "classical" western: there is a bad guy (who is not very interesting and the character is not developed) but no real good guys, the relationship between Blaisdell and Morgan is very unusual for a western, the burning of the French Palace... So, IMO, Warlock is not a classical western but it became a classic movie.

Actually, one of the hats that Mr. Schnautz made turned out to be the topper that JFK didn't wear during the inaugural parade following the swearing-in ceremony. I've seen the second segment as a "stand-alone," and it's nice to see it in context - AND it's just as enjoyable here as there. And Penny Pitou is gracious as well as beautiful and talented - and she went on to a long and happy marriage (to Austrian Alpine skier Egon Zimmerman) and a long career as a ski instructor in the area of New Hampshire where she learned to ski in the first place. (And she is, as of this post, still alive, aged 75. She was only 22 years old when she appeared on this episode, and had won her two silver medals at the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley, California.) And the same goes for the Mystery Guest segment. Henry Fonda has a great time on the show as guest. As much as it saddens me to say so, I have to agree with several other commenters: Dorothy Killgallen was drunk beyond belief on this episode. Sad.....but at least she went in for treatment, whether or not by choice.

The show was entertaining in large part because people with unusual occupations sent letters to the producers, and the producers chose occupations that were not likely to be guessed by the panel or that were likely to amuse the audience. If the contestants had been awarded the full prize, or close to it, if their occupations were guessed, this would have provided an incentive for people with common occupations to apply to appear on the show, and a disincentive for people with unusual occupations to appear.

Gig Young. So typical of the 50s. Started out handsome and rose to semi stardom, but spiraled downward with booze and numerous wives and eventually committed suicide. I still watch my VHS of "City That Never Sleeps."

If you were asking about Arlene Francis, here is her Bio. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlene_Francis
@juliansinger8 жыл бұрын
Arlene, as Vesper says, is Massachusetts. Penny Pitou's is from Southern New Hampshire. (May be a bit of Long Island mixed in, since she moved away from there when she was 3.)

Back in the early 1980's, the sister of a co-worker and her boyfriend had a sort of cross-dressed wedding. The bridal regalia included a topper, though of course not worn at the actual ceremony. (I mean, one must pay /some/ respect to tradition.) Still married, as far as I know.

Wasn't the question about owning one? A female magician could pull a rabbit out of one. ;-)
@ToddSF8 жыл бұрын
As far as owning one, I've seen women in costume before that involved wearing a cutaway coat with tails, a white tie, a boiled shirtfront and a top hat. They might well own a top hat in the appropriate size for such a costume -- either for Halloween or a costume party. I've even seen female magicians dressed that way -- and, yes, they might pull a rabbit out of such a top hat, and or pour a bottle of milk into it, only to put the hat back on with no milk in it to spill out.

By that logic, if we're doing "edge cases", then anything could be worn by anyone. Women's garters are "worn" by both sexes, for example. Just 99% women :) (I think)

@@LarsRyeJeppesen Sadly, her face is puffy and she has less than the sparkling expressive eyes that we're used to seeing. She is also combative. All that points to inebriation. She would soon be hospitalized.
